What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Bedrock multiplayer usually fails for one of a handful of reasons: the join method does not match the world type, one player is on a different or outdated version, a Microsoft account or permission setting blocks online play, the host is offline or has multiplayer switched off for that world, a console online subscription has lapsed, a Realm is inactive, or a network setting conflicts with the game. Minecraft Help does not name one universal cause, so the fastest route is to rule out causes in order, starting with what you are actually trying to join.
Start by identifying what you are joining
The checks that matter depend on the type of multiplayer session. A friend-hosted world, a LAN world, a server, and a Realm each have different host requirements and discovery rules, so confirm which one you are using before you change any settings.

| Destination | Does the host need to be online? | How players find it | Main prerequisites |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friend-hosted online world | Yes. The host must be online and multiplayer must be enabled for that world. | Direct join through Minecraft friends who are online at the same time. | Both players signed in with a Microsoft account where required, Minecraft friend status, a matching Bedrock version. |
| LAN world | The host device must be running the world on the same local network. | Discovery over the local network, which requires Visible to LAN Players to be on. | Supported devices on the same network, the latest version, Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players both enabled. |
| Realm | No. Guests can play when the Realm owner is offline. | Not stated in Minecraft Help’s Realm troubleshooting article. | Realm active and open, owner’s Realm subscription active, a supported joining device, and a current console online service where applicable. |
| Online server | Not stated in the Minecraft Help multiplayer requirements articles. | Not stated in these articles. | Not stated in these articles. Check the server operator’s own instructions. |
Confirm edition and version
A version mismatch or the wrong edition is the simplest cause to eliminate, and it is the first thing Minecraft Help asks players to verify.
- Confirm the edition on both devices. The destination must be a Bedrock game and the players must be using Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. Minecraft Help’s requirements state that Java players can only join Java hosted games, so Bedrock and Java sessions do not connect with each other.
- Update every device to the latest release. Use your platform’s store update process on each console, phone, tablet, or PC. A mismatch in versions can prevent a connection even when both players appear to be online.
- Switch off any preview or older build. If a preview or older release is installed, move to the current release on that device before you change router or network settings.
Check accounts, friend status, and permissions
Account problems often look like network failures. The game may simply refuse a connection that the account is not allowed to make.

Microsoft account sign-in
On console and mobile, players need to be signed in or linked with their Microsoft account to use online multiplayer. If you see a message that online multiplayer is unavailable because of Microsoft account setup, the fix lives in the account and privacy settings rather than the world or the network.
Friend status and simultaneous online presence
Direct joining requires that the two players are Minecraft friends and that both are online at the same time. If your friend is not visible in the Friends tab, confirm that the friendship exists on both accounts and that your friend is signed in on the device they are using to host.
“Multiplayer is disabled” and child accounts
If the game says multiplayer is disabled, check the account’s multiplayer permission. For a child account, the adult family-account owner may need to change the privacy settings that control online play. Minecraft Help’s child account troubleshooting article covers this case specifically.

Check the host’s world and console subscription
For a friend-hosted world, the host’s device is the gatekeeper. Two conditions must hold: the host must be online, and multiplayer must be enabled for that particular world. A world can be playable on the host’s device and still be invisible to friends if its multiplayer setting is off.
Console online play subscriptions
Minecraft Help’s requirements article names a platform subscription for console online play. Check which subscription applies to your console and whether it is active on the account that needs it.
| Console | Subscription named by Minecraft Help | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox | Xbox Game Pass Core | Console online play |
| PlayStation | PlayStation Plus | Console online play |
| Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Switch Online | Console online play |
The subscription is a condition for online play on the console, not for every route. A LAN session on the same network does not depend on it. If the subscription has lapsed, that is a prerequisite problem to fix first; it does not indicate a fault in your router or internet connection.

Fix LAN discovery
A LAN world only appears to other devices when several settings line up. Work through these steps on the host device.
- Confirm that every participating device is supported for LAN play and is on the same local network as the host.
- Confirm that all devices are running the latest version of Bedrock.
- Open the world’s settings on the host device and go to its Multiplayer settings.
- Turn on Multiplayer game.
- Turn on Visible to LAN Players.
- Relaunch the world and check the joining device again.
If both players are signed in and are friends, Bedrock may offer a direct online join instead of LAN discovery. Use whichever option the game presents, and confirm the online prerequisites above before expecting the LAN entry to appear.

Realms add service checks on top of the account and version checks. Minecraft Help’s Realm troubleshooting article recommends verifying the following:
Rank #4
- The Realm is active and open.
- The Realm owner’s Realm subscription is active. Guests cannot connect to a Realm whose owner’s subscription has lapsed.
- The joining device is one of the supported devices for Realms.
- Any console online service required by your platform is current.
- You have signed out and back in, updated the game, and, where relevant, restarted the device.
Check the network and service status
Minecraft Help’s multiplayer requirements article says: “Your gaming device must have a strong and stable connection to the internet and/or network.” That is the only general network requirement the official pages state. Work through these checks before changing any network hardware:
- Check platform service status. Minecraft Help points players to platform and service status pages. A platform outage can block sign-in and online joins even when your own setup is correct.
- Check the host’s connection. For a friend-hosted world, the host must actually be online at the moment you try to join.
- Review recent network changes. Minecraft’s general troubleshooting guidance says custom DNS and port configurations can conflict with the game. If you changed DNS settings or port forwarding recently, consider whether those changes are the cause before exploring other fixes.
The official sources do not recommend a particular router, cable, or diagnostic tool as a fix, and no networking product is established as a solution for these errors.
Refresh the session for sign-in errors
Some connection errors are sign-in problems in disguise. One third-party error-code reference describes a specific Bedrock connection error as a Microsoft account sign-in issue. The approach it recommends matches Minecraft Help’s Realm guidance:
Best Value
- Sign out of Minecraft and sign back in with the same Microsoft account.
- Update the game to the latest release.
- Restart the device if the error persists.
- Check platform status before repeating the join attempt.
Not every connection error has an authentication cause, so use this sequence as a targeted check rather than a guaranteed fix.
If the problem persists
When none of the checks above resolves the issue, record the exact error text, the destination type (friend world, LAN, server, or Realm), the platform on each device, and the Bedrock version on each device. Those details show which section of this guide applies and make it easier to contact Minecraft or your console’s support service if the problem continues.
