The awards went instead to Blue Prince and Sorry We’re Closed. Sandfall said the AI-made material was temporary placeholder textures that escaped quality checks and were later replaced.
Why were Expedition 33’s Indie Game Awards rescinded?
The Indie Game Awards first named Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 both Game of the Year and Best Debut Game at its December 18, 2025 ceremony. On December 20, the organization announced it was withdrawing both honors.

According to the organizer, the awards have a firm position against generative AI in games. It said Sandfall had agreed when submitting the game that no generative AI had been used in its development, then confirmed AI use on the day of the premiere. The committee said that confirmation disqualified the game from its nominations. Mike Towndrow of the nomination committee described the group’s position as “a hard stance against gen AI in videogames,” and said the subject comes up when potential nominees are discussed throughout the year. PC Gamer reported Towndrow’s comments on December 21, 2025.
The organizer’s statement, reproduced by GameSpot on December 22, 2025, said the confirmation “does disqualify Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 from its nomination.” That is the organizer’s account of its rule and the submission exchange; the available reporting does not establish the complete wording or scope of the award rules.

The reassigned winners were reported by GameSpot and Video Games Chronicle. PC Gamer also reported that an Indie Vanguard recipient was retracted, but its accessible report did not identify that recipient.
Did Expedition 33 use generative AI?
Both accounts acknowledge some AI use, but they frame its significance differently. The organizer said the game was ineligible after Sandfall confirmed generative AI had been used in development. Sandfall characterized the relevant material as temporary placeholder textures, rather than content intended to remain in the finished game.

Sandfall’s explanation
GameSpot reported Sandfall’s statement that AI-created placeholder textures were missed during quality assurance, then removed and replaced within five days after they were identified. The studio also distinguished those placeholders from pre-existing marketplace 3D assets, which it said were not AI-created.
In later comments reported by Push Square on December 24, 2025, director Guillaume Broche said the team tried AI when it became available, used it for placeholder textures, and missed some of them. He said the concept art and voice actors were human-made, and that future Sandfall games would be made by humans. These are the director’s and studio’s descriptions; the reporting does not provide an independent audit of the game’s assets.

What the reports leave unresolved
The accounts explain the dispute over the submission representation, the timing of the confirmation, and Sandfall’s claim that the textures were temporary and replaced. They do not establish whether the award policy treated any development-stage AI use as disqualifying, or only AI material in a released game. The award FAQ was linked in coverage, but its full wording is not available in the reporting cited here. Accordingly, it is safest to describe the decision as the organizer’s application of its stated no-generative-AI position, rather than to claim a more specific rule than the published accounts support.
