Epic can remove Fortnite V-Bucks or items after a payment is refunded or reversed, after a gift sender reverses the payment used to buy it, or in connection with a specific Xbox exploit that faked V-Bucks purchases. But Epic’s official pages do not confirm a newly announced, sweeping removal campaign or say how many accounts were affected. The documented policies explain possible reasons for an individual account’s missing items—not proof of a new purge.
Why might Fortnite V-Bucks or skins be removed?
Epic Games Player Support lists several circumstances that can lead to items or V-Bucks being removed. They include a refund or payment reversal, a reversal by the sender of a gift, and a specific Xbox exploit involving fake V-Bucks purchases. Epic’s explanation is available on its Fortnite item-removal support page.

A refund or chargeback
If a purchase is refunded or reversed, Epic may remove the associated items or V-Bucks. A reversal can follow a refund request or a chargeback filed with a bank or other payment provider. Epic’s Fortnite Chargebacks policy says purchased items associated with a chargeback are removed from the account.

A reversed gift payment
A gift recipient can be affected even if they did not request a refund themselves: Epic says items may be removed if the sender reverses the payment for the V-Bucks used to buy the gift.

A specific Xbox exploit
Epic also identifies an Xbox exploit that faked V-Bucks purchases as a reason items or currency may be removed. That policy reference does not establish that an account was affected by this exploit; check the explanation Epic gives for your account.
What happens if a reversal leaves your V-Bucks balance short?
Epic says it may return recent Item Shop purchases made within the previous 90 days and reverse recent gifts to cover a payment reversal. If those actions still do not cover the amount, the account may show a negative V-Bucks balance. The 90-day period is the policy window described by Epic, not a measure of how many accounts or purchases were affected.

What should you do if items or V-Bucks are missing?
- Check the explanation from Epic. Look for a notice or account-specific information identifying a payment reversal, gift reversal, exploit, or sanction. Do not assume that missing items alone prove a particular cause.
- If you believe a payment reversal is wrong, contact the payment provider. Epic says Player Support cannot restore items removed for the reasons covered by its item-removal guidance. If the reversal was made in error, Epic advises contacting the payment provider to address it.
- If you bought through a platform, contact that platform’s support. For purchases made through Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Apple, or Google, Epic directs players to the relevant provider.
- If Epic applied a sanction, use the appeal route when eligible. Payment-provider disputes and sanctions are separate processes; an appeal is not a way to reverse a chargeback.
How chargebacks can affect purchases
Epic’s chargeback policy says cards associated with a chargeback cannot be used again within Epic products. After two or more chargebacks, the account from which the unauthorized purchase was made can be blocked from making purchases across Epic products for up to one year. Epic notes an exception for V-Bucks gift cards acquired outside the in-game Item Shop. Its policy page also says it is retroactively restoring accounts banned under the previous policy for reported chargebacks in certain non-fraud-related scenarios.

Missing items after a Fortnite ban: temporary versus permanent
A sanction can affect access to items differently from a payment reversal. Epic’s ban and item guidance distinguishes temporary bans from permanent ones:
Rank #3
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
| Ban type | Item consequence described by Epic |
|---|---|
| Temporary | Items remain on the account and become accessible again when the ban period ends. |
| Permanent | Epic may remove the account owner’s rights to account content and balances. |
Do not treat a ban as evidence of a payment reversal, or a payment reversal as an account sanction; the applicable process depends on the reason Epic gives.
How to appeal an eligible sanction
Epic’s Sanctions and Appeals guidance says account owners can review eligible sanctions and submit one appeal per eligible sanction. A human moderator reviews the appeal and may uphold, lift, or modify the sanction. This route is for eligible sanctions, not payment-provider disputes.
