Why Game Composers Publish Cut Music—and How Those Tracks Survive

Game composers release unused music because a project can change after a cue has already been written, recorded, or assigned a role. A track may no longer fit the finished game without being unfinished or artistically rejected. Creators preserve it in bonus tracks, separate albums, prototype editions, alternate versions, or developer-published downloads. Those releases preserve listening access and sometimes production notes, but they do not automatically preserve the original project files or the complete sound of playing the game. The clearest documented example is melos han-tani’s The Old Ocean (Unused Music of Even the Ocean), a separate presentation of music that had already appeared as bonuses on the larger game soundtrack.

Why do game composers release unused music?

The most direct documented reason is that development changes can make an existing musical style unsuitable for the final game. In notes for The Old Ocean (Unused Music of Even the Ocean), composer and Even the Ocean co-creator melos han-tani writes: “Because of how long ETO’s development was, the game changed in a way where this style didn’t fit.” That is an individual account, not a rule that explains every cut cue, but it shows why “unused” should not be read as “bad” or “unfinished.”

Han-tani says the music was already available as bonus material on the larger Even the Ocean OST. A separate album then gave the abandoned pieces a more prominent, coherent presentation. The release page credits an original release on November 16, 2016; its notes identify songs re-released on May 1, 2026. Those are separate events, so the project should not be described as a 2026 debut.

A changed game can leave a complete musical document behind

A cue can be fully composed and still lose its intended scene, character, level, or mood when the game’s structure changes. Releasing it later lets the composer show what that earlier direction sounded like. Han-tani also gave pieces new or refreshed names, sometimes reflecting their abandoned intended uses, while retaining track IDs that connect them to the earlier OST. The result preserves both a listenable recording and clues about its development history.

Release can be an act of curation, not just recovery

Creators choose what to present, how to sequence it, and how much explanation to provide. A separate album can turn scattered bonus files into a readable chapter of a game’s production. Other releases leave the material inside a larger soundtrack and identify it with labels such as “unused,” “prototype,” “scrapped,” “alternate,” or a bracketed description of eventual use. The label and accompanying notes matter because a bonus track is not automatically a cut cue.

What happens to music cut from a video game?

Cut music can remain private, appear in an official soundtrack, or be published as a distinct archival set. The documented examples below show several different approaches rather than one industry standard.

Release How the cut material is presented Documented details
The Old Ocean (Unused Music of Even the Ocean) Separate album focused on abandoned music Original release credited November 16, 2016; songs noted as re-released May 1, 2026; refreshed names and earlier track IDs connect it to the main OST
Phantasie V: Resurrection Complete Official Soundtrack Prototype music, unused cues, and variations within a complete soundtrack presentation Publisher date September 9, 2022; notes distinguish original-purpose titles from bracketed eventual uses and provide track-by-track commentary
Snacko soundtrack Mixed soundtrack with unused tracks and other bonus material Release credited December 7, 2023; also includes jingles, trailer music, and remixes, so not every bonus is unused game music
Unveil Numbered bonus album outside the final game Tracks 41–64 are described as a bonus album not included in the final game: 24 bonus tracks, Adam Halpin, 2017
The Train Unused and scrapped tracks offered as bonuses Release credited August 19, 2022; individual tracks are marked unused
Ace In Space Developer soundtrack listing with an alternate cut and an explicitly unused cue “Guardian’s March (Unused)” is identified; MP3 and WAV formats are offered; release date February 14, 2020
Endacopia soundtrack listing Large digital set with extended, alternate, and unused songs 102 tracks in the 2026 Steam listing; guest-musician tracks are explicitly excluded

These examples also show why the phrase “complete soundtrack” needs context. It may mean all tracks the publisher chose to include, not every abandoned idea, every contributor’s work, or every file that once existed in development.

Does an official OST include every cut song?

No. An official OST preserves the selection its composer or rights holder released. It may identify unused material, but it does not prove that all unreleased cues, drafts, stems, source projects, or interactive variations survived.

“Unused” is a release-specific description

In the cited releases, “unused” means absent from the final game as that release describes it. A track may have been written for a prototype, replaced after a scene changed, used in a trailer rather than gameplay, or retained only as an alternate version. Read the creator’s labels and notes instead of treating every bonus track as evidence of a cut cue.

Mixed bonus sections need careful reading

Snacko is a useful warning: its soundtrack combines unused tracks with jingles, trailer music, and remixes. Those categories document different parts of production. A trailer cue can be official and unreleased in the game while never having been intended as an in-game track; a remix can be new material made for the album. The release’s own description determines which category applies.

How are unused game tracks preserved?

Preservation has at least three layers: a published recording, a production archive, and documentation of how the music sounded during play. They overlap, but none substitutes completely for the others.

1. Publish an approved recording

A released track keeps an otherwise unheard composition available to listeners. A title, version label, alternate mix, earlier track ID, or explanatory note can add historical value. The Old Ocean connects refreshed names to the earlier OST, while Phantasie V explains original purposes, bracketed eventual uses, and individual track history.

Distribution format does not determine completeness. A downloadable album can preserve the same approved recording as a physical edition, and a physical record can omit digital extras. “Complete” is meaningful only in relation to what the publisher says the edition contains.

2. Keep the production archive

The Video Game History Foundation’s Video Game Source Project argues for retaining the raw materials and documentation used to make games. That can include source recordings, session projects, notes, build data, naming information, and provenance showing who created or supplied each asset. The Foundation identifies trade secrecy, physical deterioration or digital neglect, and a lack of archival awareness as barriers to access.

Frank Cifaldi summarized the value of that approach in the project’s 2020 announcement: “In the hands of an historian, a properly archived source repository is the next best thing to time travel.” An archive may preserve material that no commercial album can publish, but access still depends on ownership, permissions, and the archive’s policies.

3. Preserve the sound of play

Extracted music files do not always document the complete audible experience. James Newman’s 2018 research argues that music, sound effects, hardware, timing, and player interaction can alter what a player hears. A soundtrack album remains valuable as a stable recording; it simply answers a different question from an audiovisual record of the game running in its original context.

Who can authorize the release of unused game music?

The answer depends on the actual ownership and contract arrangement for that project. Do not assume that the composer automatically owns every cue, or that a developer automatically controls every recording.

A Bandcamp Daily interview describes one specific arrangement in which Jim Guthrie owned his music after the game’s release. That example demonstrates why a composer may be able to authorize a later release, but it is not a universal rule. Other projects may assign rights to a studio, publisher, co-developer, label, or another contracting party.

Before publishing or circulating cut music, the rights holder should be identified for the composition, the recording, and any commissioned contributions. An official album is evidence that someone authorized that particular release; it is not permission for fans to redistribute unreleased files. The Foundation’s discussion of restricted source access reinforces that ownership and access are separate questions.

How can you compare an official release of cut tracks?

Use four questions: what was selected, what evidence identifies each version, how much provenance is supplied, and which formats are actually included. The same album can be strong on one axis and limited on another.

Axis What to look for Why it matters
Selection Named unused pieces, prototype cues, alternates, or a broad in-game repertoire Shows whether the release is focused on abandoned work or simply a general OST
Version evidence Labels such as prototype, unused, scrapped, alternate, extended, or final Prevents a remix or trailer cue from being mistaken for a cut gameplay track
Provenance Original-purpose titles, earlier track IDs, intended uses, dates, and commentary Connects the audio to a specific stage of development
Format Download files, CD, vinyl, or a physical edition with separate digital bonuses Clarifies what listeners receive; a physical object is not automatically a fuller archive

Physical editions can split the contents

Jim Guthrie’s artist storefront lists a physical edition with 14 vinyl tracks plus 13 digital bonus tracks, and marks the vinyl sold out in 2026. That is a concrete example of a record and its digital supplements containing different selections. The same storefront lists a physical CD, but the listing does not establish that the CD contains unused game cues.

The phrase “Sword and Sworcery The Ballad of the Space Babies soundtrack CD” can describe a physical soundtrack product, but no cited source establishes that its CD contains cut cues or that Amazon has a current listing. Treat a CD, vinyl record, or download as a format description until the edition’s track list says what is included.

What should creators and archivists keep?

For files they are authorized to retain, creators and institutions should preserve both the audio and the information needed to interpret it. A practical checklist is:

  • Keep the highest-quality approved mixes alongside delivery formats such as MP3 or WAV.
  • Retain project files, stems, cue sheets, version names, dates, and notes about intended scenes when rights and storage policy allow.
  • Record which build, prototype, trailer, or final release each cue belongs to.
  • Preserve contributor and ownership information so a later release can be authorized correctly.
  • Maintain more than one verified backup and periodically check that files remain readable.
  • Document interactive behavior, hardware assumptions, and relationships to sound effects when the goal is to preserve in-play sound rather than only an album.

A generic external drive can be part of an authorized backup plan, but storage advice does not create a right to copy or distribute someone else’s masters. Public access should follow the permission granted for the specific files.

Why does this preservation distinction matter to listeners?

It prevents two opposite mistakes. Calling every bonus track “unused” erases the difference between a cut cue, a remix, a trailer piece, and a newly made extra. Calling an album a complete archive overstates what a published recording can preserve when session files, documentation, interactive logic, or other contributors’ work are absent.

The most useful release is therefore not necessarily the longest one. A short album with clear labels and track history may tell listeners more about a game’s abandoned direction than a larger, unexplained collection. Conversely, a broad archive may be invaluable to historians even when it is not cleared for public distribution.

What is the clearest example of an abandoned game-music album?

The Old Ocean (Unused Music of Even the Ocean) is the clearest documented example because its creator explains both why the style no longer fit and why the material received a separate presentation. Its notes also connect the new names to the earlier soundtrack through retained track IDs. Remember that the album’s original release and its 2026 re-release notes describe different dates.

What does “prototype music” mean on a soundtrack?

It usually identifies music associated with an earlier development version, not necessarily a cue that was fully removed from every build. Phantasie V is especially useful because its notes distinguish original-purpose titles from descriptions of eventual in-game use, allowing listeners to see how a track’s role changed.

Can fans upload a game’s unused files?

Not merely because the files are absent from the finished game. Uploading a file requires permission from whoever controls the relevant composition and recording, and an archive’s possession does not automatically grant public redistribution rights. An officially released album is the safer basis for public listening than an unauthorized extraction or leaked development file.

Why do some soundtrack listings provide both MP3 and WAV?

They are different delivery formats for the released recording, not proof that one contains hidden source material. The Ace In Space listing, for example, offers MP3 and WAV while identifying an alternate cut and “Guardian’s March (Unused).” To learn whether a release contains stems, drafts, or other production sources, look for an explicit statement rather than inferring it from the file extension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a sold-out vinyl edition mean the music is lost?

No. A sold-out physical pressing affects access to that object, not necessarily access to the recordings or digital bonuses. Guthrie’s listing separates 14 vinyl tracks from 13 digital bonus tracks, illustrating why availability and completeness must be checked edition by edition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are unused tracks usually released years after a game?

There is no established industry-wide timetable or frequency. The cited examples range from Adam Halpin’s 2017 bonus album to releases credited in 2022, 2023, and 2026, so timing reflects each project’s decisions rather than a standard window.

Can a soundtrack preserve music from a prototype that never shipped?

Yes, when the publisher identifies the material that way. Prototype, alternate, and unused labels describe different relationships to development, so the release notes should be read before treating a cue as a final-game cut.

What information makes an unused-track release historically valuable?

Track IDs tied to an earlier OST, original-purpose titles, intended-use notes, version labels, and contributor credits let listeners place audio in the game’s timeline. Without that context, the recording may remain listenable but tell less about how the project changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might an archive restrict access to source recordings?

Owners may need to protect trade secrets, contractual rights, unreleased material, or deteriorating assets. Preservation seeks to keep the material and its provenance safe; public distribution is a separate decision governed by permission.
