Can you use Ditto in Pokémon GO Gym battles?
Yes. Niantic’s November 23, 2016 announcement says that when training or battling at a Gym, Ditto copies the appearance, types, and moves of the first Pokémon it sees. It keeps that form for the rest of those Gym battles.
This is a specific Gym-battle mechanic, not a statement about every battle mode. Niantic’s general Gym battle guidance explains how Gym battles work but does not provide a comprehensive Ditto eligibility chart.
Why is Ditto excluded from some Pokémon GO tournaments?
The Play! Pokémon Pokémon GO Tournament Rules PDF dated September 29, 2023 lists Ditto among the Pokémon that cannot be included on a player’s team in the Pokémon GO Championship Series competition covered by those rules. That is a tournament eligibility restriction; it does not establish a universal Pokémon GO ban.

Because that document is dated 2023, it does not by itself confirm Ditto’s eligibility for every current or future tournament. Tournament organizers can specify the rules for an event, so use the latest rules for the competition you intend to enter.
What about GO Battle League, raids, or Team GO Rocket?
The cited official material does not establish a complete, current Ditto eligibility rule for GO Battle League, raids, Team GO Rocket battles, or special events. Niantic’s Raid Battles overview describes choosing a team of six, but does not state a Ditto-specific prohibition. A page that does not mention Ditto is not proof that Ditto is either allowed or banned in that mode.
