According to Epic Games’ support guidance, the size of a Fortnite update can differ by platform and can even differ between players on the same platform. On PC, optional installation components can also change how much is downloaded. Epic has documented one historical case in which a performance-oriented change made one console update larger than normal. Those explanations cover several real causes, but they do not show that every large update has the same cause.
Why update size is not one fixed number
When two friends update Fortnite at the same time and see different sizes, the difference is usually not a glitch. Epic’s support page on this question states that update sizes vary by platform and can vary between players on the same platform. The most common reasons are listed below.

- Platform. Epic says update sizes differ across platforms, so a PC update and a console or mobile update for the same version will not necessarily match.
- Optional PC components. On PC, High Resolution Textures, the Save the World campaign, and pre-downloaded streamed assets can each affect how much is downloaded.
- Technical changes in a specific release. Epic’s patch notes for v3.5 show that the way game data is arranged can change the size of a download, not only the amount of new content.
The size shown during an update is therefore best read as the download required for your setup, not a measure of how much new gameplay you will notice.
Historical examples of large updates
Epic’s patch notes provide concrete examples from earlier releases. They are useful for understanding the mechanics, but they describe past builds and should not be treated as current figures.

| Release and source | Platform | What Epic said | Date of source | Current relevance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| v3.5 patch notes | Xbox One and PS4 | Data-layout optimizations reduced load times by 25–30 seconds on Xbox One and around 10 seconds on PS4. The Xbox One download was larger than normal for that release, and Epic said it was working to reduce the impact of this kind of optimization in future releases. | 2018 | Historical only. These results are for that release and do not describe current hardware. |
| v3.4 mobile patch notes | Mobile | Epic added a game-data download system intended to allow much smaller future updates. The initial launch of that version still downloaded the full game data, described as around 1.8 GB. | 2018 | Historical only. The 1.8 GB figure is not a current install or update size. |
| v8.30 patch notes | Xbox One | Epic listed patching improvements to reduce download size while ensuring good I/O performance. No quantified result was given. | 2019 | Describes a change in that release only. It does not establish how current builds are patched. |
Taken together, these notes show that patching methods have changed over time. A later update may be smaller or larger than an earlier one for reasons that have nothing to do with how much content it adds.
If you are on PC and want to reduce the installed footprint
Optional components are the one cause of size differences that a PC player can control directly. Epic’s instructions are to remove only the features you do not need:
Rank #2
- Platform Compatibility: Fortnite Video Game designed specifically for Nintendo Switch console
- Visual Design: Multicolor presentation featuring vibrant graphics and engaging visual elements
- Compact Dimensions: Measures 17 x 0.8 x 10.2 cm for convenient storage and handling
- Product Reference: Reference number S7193683 for easy identification and ordering
- Digital Download Code: Includes Transformers Pack content delivered via download code for instant access
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Go to Library.
- Click the three dots beside Fortnite.
- Select Options.
- Uncheck any available features you do not need.
Epic specifically notes that High Resolution Textures increase the file size of Pre-Download Streamed Assets. The trade-off is simple: removing an optional component can save space, but a feature you still want may no longer be installed locally and will need to be downloaded again before you can use it.
If the displayed download size looks implausible
Epic states that a communication error can cause file sizes to be misreported. If the number on screen is far from what you expect, Epic’s troubleshooting suggestions are:
Rank #3
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Verify Fortnite through the Launcher’s Manage menu. Epic says verification checks local files for damage or differences, repairs changed files, and does not affect saved data.
- If the size still looks wrong, clear the Epic Games Launcher cache. Epic’s support page includes separate cache-clearing steps for PC and Mac.
These are suggestions for a possible launcher or communication problem. They do not mean that every unusually large update is an error, and a large update can still be correct for the reasons above.
Checking the space an update actually requires
The most reliable figure for a given update is the one the game shows when the update is queued. Epic says the update screen displays the space required, regardless of platform. Epic’s guidance does not publish a current size table for each platform or version, so the queued update screen is the source to use for any specific patch.
Rank #4
- Reimagine your reality starting October 2022! The Anime Legends Pack makes its premiere at retail on October 14 and in digital stores October 22. This Pack includes ten items total, including new looks for fan-favorite characters
- Create, play, and battle with friends for free in Fortnite. Explore concerts, live events, games, and more or be the last player standing in Battle Royale and Zero Build.
Storage upgrades: a later step, not a first fix
If a platform’s storage is genuinely full, Epic’s guidance confirms that players can run into space limits. It does not recommend a particular drive or confirm that any given device is supported for Fortnite installs or updates. Start with the PC component options and your platform’s own storage and update requirements. Only consider new storage after you have confirmed that your platform supports it for this purpose.
What the evidence does not establish
- Epic’s support guidance does not give a current, version-specific download size for every platform, so no universal current install or update size should be assumed.
- The sources do not say that every large update results from repacking, poor optimization, or unnecessary content.
- No platform is established as always receiving the largest patch.
- Historical figures from 2018 and 2019 describe those releases only. Check the queued update screen for the size that applies to you today.
Epic’s support language is clearest on four points: size varies by platform and by player setup, PC optional components can change the download, file verification can fix a misreported size, and the queued update screen shows the required space.
