If Rainbow Six Siege—often shortened to R6—will not launch, the right fix depends on what happens after you press Play. The guidance below focuses on PC, especially Steam and Ubisoft Connect, because that is where the available troubleshooting steps apply. If you are on console, or these checks do not match your symptom, note your platform, storefront, and any error message before contacting Ubisoft Support.
First, identify what happens when you try to launch R6
Before changing settings, note the symptom. Does Play do nothing, does a launcher open and close, does the game show a splash screen and exit, or does Siege X remain stuck on its small launch screen? Also check whether the game process appears briefly in Task Manager and whether an anti-cheat prompt or error appears. These details help distinguish a launcher issue from a game hang or a specific post-update problem.
- Platform: PC or console.
- PC storefront: Steam or Ubisoft Connect.
- Exact behavior: no response, launchers closing, a brief splash screen, or a persistent screen.
- Recent change: an update, new software, or a changed security setting.
Try Ubisoft’s PC and Steam checks
For a Steam launch problem on PC, Ubisoft developer guidance recommends checking the following. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes. Ubisoft’s Steam troubleshooting discussion dates to March 16, 2025.
- Update Ubisoft Connect. Open Ubisoft Connect and install any available client update, then retry the game.
- Check the PC against the game’s system requirements. If the computer does not meet them, that can affect whether the game starts.
- Check the installation drives. Ubisoft’s guidance includes checking whether the game and launchers are installed on the same drive.
- Check security permissions. Make sure antivirus or firewall software is not blocking Rainbow Six Siege or Ubisoft Connect. Prefer a specific allow rule over turning protection off wholesale.
- Follow Ubisoft’s troubleshooting guidance. Use the support steps linked from Ubisoft’s response for your particular setup rather than making unrelated system changes.
- Test Steam with administrator rights. This is a troubleshooting check, not a setting you need to keep permanently if it does not help.
- Try a clean boot to check for software interference. A clean boot starts Windows with a reduced set of startup programs and services; if the game launches, re-enable items methodically to identify a conflict.
Close background apps and overlays as a test
Close nonessential background applications and overlays, then try launching again. Ubisoft developer Ubi-Keo wrote on June 13, 2025, that “It can be common for background applications such as MSI Afterburner to cause issues when launching games.” That is a general warning about possible interference, not proof that Afterburner—or any particular app—is causing your problem. If closing background software changes the result, reopen your apps one at a time to narrow down which one may be involved. Avoid uninstalling software or changing several settings at once before you have a clear symptom to compare.
Only for a Siege X hang on the small screen after an update
Use this cache-folder workaround only if Siege X gets stuck on its small launch screen after an update. In an August 2025 support discussion, Ubisoft developer Ubi-Mysterion described that specific issue as known and under investigation at the time and suggested deleting the folder below while the game is not running. One player later reported success, but that report does not establish that the workaround applies to other launch failures or remains relevant to every current installation.
