Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Minecraft’s cursor stays visible, stops controlling the camera, or escapes onto another monitor, the cause is usually lost input capture—not a broken mouse. Click back into the game, press Esc twice, press F11 twice, and test in ordinary windowed mode. That first test distinguishes a focus or fullscreen problem from an edition, mod, operating-system, or hardware problem.
The exact fix depends on whether you are playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, which operating system and display setup you use, and whether the problem began after switching fullscreen, pressing Alt+Tab, opening an overlay, or installing mods.

First, identify what “mouse not locking” means
Minecraft normally captures relative mouse movement during active first-person gameplay. The operating-system pointer may be hidden while the camera responds normally. Menus and inventory screens release the pointer so you can interact with them. Java’s official hotkey documentation lists Esc for opening the game menu and F11 for toggling fullscreen: Minecraft Java Edition hotkeys.
- The cursor moves onto another monitor: Minecraft is not successfully confining the pointer to its window.
- The cursor is visible but the camera does not move: the game may have lost gameplay focus.
- The cursor disappears in fullscreen but the camera works: that is normally expected during gameplay.
- The camera jumps or flicks when control returns: the window may be recapturing input incorrectly, or a mod, overlay, or display mode may be interfering.
- The mouse works in menus but not in the world: the physical mouse is probably working; focus or relative input is the more likely problem.
- The issue began after Alt+Tab, F11, resizing, streaming, or opening an overlay: start with window focus and fullscreen tests.
Quick recovery for Java Edition
- Click once inside the Minecraft window or world.
- Press Esc to open the menu.
- Press Esc again, or click back into the game, to recapture gameplay input.
- Press F11 to leave fullscreen.
- Click inside the window and test camera movement for several seconds.
- If it works, press F11 again only if you need fullscreen.
On a laptop, F11 may require Fn + F11. Avoid immediately pressing Alt+Tab after recapturing the mouse; first check whether the camera remains stable.

Java also has F3 + P, which toggles whether the game automatically pauses when its window loses focus. It does not lock or clip the cursor. Use it only as a focus diagnostic, not as a mouse-capture command.
Test windowed mode before changing drivers or reinstalling
Windowed mode is the most useful diagnostic because it separates Minecraft’s input handling from fullscreen and monitor behavior.
- Works windowed, fails fullscreen: investigate fullscreen mode, display scaling, monitor arrangement, overlays, capture software, and the graphics driver.
- Fails both windowed and fullscreen: investigate focus, mods, launcher files, input settings, and operating-system handling.
- Only one installation fails: create a clean vanilla instance before changing system-wide settings.
- Every game fails to capture the mouse: troubleshoot Windows, Linux, drivers, mouse utilities, remote-desktop software, or the mouse itself.
Fullscreen is not automatically a fix. Borderless fullscreen can fill the display while behaving like a large window, and the pointer may still escape if capture is not maintained.

Bedrock Edition on Windows: stop the cursor escaping
Do not apply Java-only shortcuts or settings to Bedrock. If the pointer leaves the Minecraft window in Bedrock for Windows, use this order:
- Open Minecraft’s settings and verify the intended window or fullscreen mode.
- Switch temporarily to ordinary windowed mode.
- If you use two displays, disable or disconnect the second monitor and test again.
- Restart Minecraft after changing the display mode.
- Close Discord, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, OBS, Streamlabs, remote-play tools, and other programs that interact with the pointer or game window.
- Temporarily disable add-ons and resource packs.
- Update Minecraft and Windows, then restart the PC.
- Test a new world or clean profile to determine whether the problem is tied to a particular world or installation.
A persistent Bedrock Windows cursor-escape problem may be an edition or window-management bug rather than a setting you can repair. Mojang’s Feedback site contains reports of fullscreen mouse escape, including a support response describing the issue as known and under investigation; that is evidence of a reported problem, not a guarantee that every similar case has the same cause or status: Minecraft Feedback fullscreen mouse-lock report.
These steps match Mojang’s general troubleshooting guidance: update, restart, close other programs, disable add-ons, adjust settings, and back up worlds before reinstalling: Bedrock troubleshooting guidance.

If you use two monitors
Dual-monitor setups are a strong clue that the issue is pointer confinement rather than a defective sensor. Test with one display first. If the cursor stays captured with the second monitor disabled, the likely variables are fullscreen mode, borderless-window behavior, display scaling, monitor resolution, overlays, or a focus transition.
For a practical workaround, use windowed mode or the display mode that succeeds in your setup. Third-party cursor-clipping utilities can help in some multi-monitor configurations, but they are optional and unsupported workarounds. They add another background process that may conflict with overlays, streaming, remote desktop, or other games, so do not make them the first fix.
Mods, launchers, streaming and overlays
A modded installation can change GUI behavior, fullscreen handling, window decorations, or input libraries. A launcher can also use a different game directory or Java configuration. Test the same Minecraft version in a fresh, unmodified vanilla instance.

Do not delete the entire .minecraft folder as an initial fix. It can contain settings, installations, logs, screenshots, and worlds depending on your setup. Back up worlds and important files before changing files or reinstalling. On Linux, cursor capture can depend on the display session, compositor, launcher, and input backend. Community reports describe cursor-lock failures under Wayland, including fullscreen problems involving pointer constraints and GLFW. These reports identify a plausible failure mode but do not establish that every Wayland setup is affected or that Mojang has officially confirmed every case: Minecraft Feedback Wayland cursor-lock report.
Try the following controlled comparisons:
- Switch from a Wayland session to an X11 session and retest.
- Test windowed mode rather than fullscreen.
- Compare the official launcher with your alternative launcher, if applicable.
- Check whether the issue occurs only with one desktop environment or compositor.
- Record the Minecraft version, launcher, Java version, desktop session, compositor, monitor layout, and fullscreen mode.
Avoid installing random GLFW libraries without checking compatibility and having a rollback plan. A library change can create new launcher or mod-loader failures.

Recent Java snapshot changes matter
If you are testing a snapshot rather than a stable Java release, do not assume older mouse advice still applies. Java Edition 26.3 Snapshot 4 changed the window and input stack from GLFW to SDL3, removed the Raw Input mouse setting, and uses relative mouse mode during gameplay. It also made borderless fullscreen the default and warns that exclusive fullscreen on Windows can crash in some situations, particularly with multiple monitors. See Mojang’s announcement: Java 26.3 Snapshot 4.

When the problem is probably a game bug
Report the issue instead of repeatedly changing unrelated settings when it is reliably limited to one edition, snapshot, monitor arrangement, desktop session, or fullscreen mode—and still occurs in a clean installation.
Include:
- Edition and exact Minecraft version.
- Operating system, build, and desktop session if using Linux.
- Official or third-party launcher and complete mod list.
- Number, resolution, scaling, and arrangement of monitors.
- Windowed, borderless, or exclusive fullscreen mode.
- Whether the issue also occurs with one monitor disconnected.
- Whether it occurs in a clean vanilla instance.
- Whether overlays, streaming, remote desktop, or capture software are active.
- A short, repeatable sequence such as “launch, press F11, Alt+Tab, return, click world, move mouse.”
That information makes an edition or platform issue distinguishable from a local configuration problem.
Quick Recap
Shortest decision path
| Symptom | First test | Likely direction |
|---|---|---|
| Cursor crosses to another monitor | Disable the second monitor or use windowed mode | Fullscreen, borderless mode, overlays, or Bedrock capture behavior |
| Menus work but camera does not | Click the game, press Esc, then Esc again | Lost gameplay focus |
| Failure begins after F11 | Press F11 twice and test windowed mode | Fullscreen transition or display configuration |
| Cursor disappears only in fullscreen | Test windowed mode | Often normal gameplay hiding, or a fullscreen rendering issue if camera input also fails |
| Camera jumps after recapture | Test vanilla with another display mode | Relative-input, mod, overlay, or fullscreen conflict |
| Only modded Minecraft fails | Run a clean vanilla instance | Mod, loader, launcher, or custom input conflict |
| Only Wayland fails | Test X11 and windowed mode | Compositor or input-backend compatibility |
| All games fail | Test another mouse and another game | Operating system, driver, utility, or hardware problem |
What not to assume
- Fullscreen should always lock the cursor: fullscreen, borderless fullscreen, and exclusive fullscreen are different behaviors.
- F3 + P locks the mouse: it changes Java’s auto-pause behavior when focus is lost.
- Raw Input always fixes capture: its availability depends on the Java version, and it was removed in Java 26.3 Snapshot 4.
- Reinstalling will solve it: reinstalling may refresh damaged files but will not necessarily solve a window-manager or edition-level bug.
- The mouse must be broken: if menus respond and another game works, Minecraft’s focus or input capture is more likely at fault.
