Magic: The Gathering’s plane formerly called Kaladesh is now Avishkar, pronounced “AH-vish-kar.” Wizards of the Coast announced the change on December 10, 2024, saying it wanted to address an unfortunate connotation reported by its consultants while preserving Kaladesh as the name of the historical setting and its existing products.
Why did Wizards change Kaladesh’s name?
Wizards said it had received feedback that “Kaladesh” carried unfortunate connotations in some Hindi dialects. In its December 10, 2024 explanation, the publisher said consultants explained that “kala” can mean “black” and can carry derogatory colorist and racist connotations when applied to a person. Wizards wrote, “We didn’t want that connotation to hang over this plane each time we visited it.”
Wizards also explained the original name’s construction: “kalā” (pronounced “kah-LAH”) can mean “tomorrow” or “art,” while “-desh” means “home” or “country.” Its account says the concern arose from the different word “kālā” (pronounced “KAH-lah”), associated with “black.” The published explanation does not name the consultants or include an independent linguistic report, so the rationale here is Wizards’ account of the advice it received.
How was Avishkar chosen?
Wizards said it involved subject-matter and language experts early in Aetherdrift’s development, generated possible names, and reviewed candidates with consultants for pronunciation, meaning, and connotations. It says the consultants vetted both “Avishkar” and its spelling. The name comes from Hindi “aavishkar,” meaning “invention.”

What is Avishkar in Magic’s story?
The change also applies within the fiction, but Wizards did not rewrite history to claim the plane had always been Avishkar. Its account says the world was historically called Kaladesh and became Avishkar after story events that included the downfall of the Consulate. The official explanation points to the Planeswalker’s Guide to Aetherdrift for that in-world history.
A later Aetherdrift design article published January 21, 2025 uses Avishkar for the plane and Kaladesh for the historical set. Mark Rosewater describes Avishkar as the home of the race and connects the setting’s technology and invention themes to Aetherdrift. He also notes that Kaladesh introduced Vehicles, a fitting link to the racing-focused set.

Will older Kaladesh cards and products change?
No. Wizards said it is not renaming past products or changing historical terminology on older cards. The Kaladesh set and Kaladesh Remastered retain those titles, as do cards including Invasion of Kaladesh and Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh. Going forward, Wizards says it will use “Kaladesh” only when referring to past products or the earlier period of the story; Avishkar is the plane’s name in present and future references.
