Why Modern Steam Games Can Look Wrong on a 4:3 CRT Monitor

Modern Steam games often target widescreen displays, while a 4:3 CRT has a squarer visible area. The picture looks wrong when any stage in the chain—game, operating system, GPU driver, converter, or CRT—maps one aspect ratio to the other without preserving proportions. A full-screen mode can make circles appear oval and characters look unnaturally wide or narrow; an aspect-preserving mode can add black bars instead.

The reliable fix is to choose a genuine 4:3 render mode when the game offers one, then set the GPU to preserve aspect ratio (or center the image) rather than fill the panel. If the game only exposes widescreen resolutions, use a 4:3 desktop or virtual output and let the scaler preserve the source shape. Your adapter must also support the required resolution and refresh rate.

What is actually going wrong

Aspect ratio is the relationship between an image’s width and height. A 4:3 CRT is approximately 1.33:1; common modern game modes such as 1920×1080 are 16:9, or approximately 1.78:1. If a scaler maps every source pixel into the entire 4:3 area, horizontal and vertical dimensions are changed by different amounts. That non-uniform scaling alters geometry: a round object becomes an oval, a square HUD element becomes rectangular, and the field of view can feel unlike the developer’s intended presentation.

Preserving the original ratio requires unused display area when the source and display shapes differ. Steam Support describes this behavior directly: when a game’s aspect ratio does not match the display, Steam compensates with black bars on the sides or top. Which edges receive bars depends on the source and destination shapes and on the scaling stage that handles the conversion.

There is no single “CRT look” setting that overrides every stage. The game chooses a render resolution and may change its field-of-view logic; the GPU driver can scale, center, or stretch that frame; a digital-to-analog converter can impose its own mode limits; and the CRT’s geometry controls determine how the analog raster is positioned and sized.

Choose the right strategy first

Decide whether you value correct proportions, maximum screen coverage, or an unfiltered pixel image. The three common GPU behaviors have different consequences.

Scaling mode Geometry Screen fill Typical result on a 4:3 CRT
Aspect ratio / Preserve aspect ratio Maintains the source’s dimensional proportions Leaves unused space when ratios differ Correct shapes with borders
Full-screen / Full panel Expands independently to the display dimensions Fills the entire CRT raster Potentially distorted geometry
No scaling / Center Leaves the image at its original size and centers it Uses only the source-sized area Small, crisp image with surrounding space
Integer scaling Scales by whole-number factors where supported Depends on the available integer factor Sharp edges without fractional filtering

NVIDIA defines Aspect ratio as expanding the desktop as much as possible while maintaining the original proportions. Its Full-screen option stretches the desktop to fill the display, while No scaling keeps the original size and centers it. NVIDIA also documents integer scaling for supported Turing-and-later GPUs when scaling is performed on the GPU. AMD’s GPU-scaling controls use the labels Preserve aspect ratio, Full panel, and Center and can upscale lower-resolution content over DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort.

Use Aspect ratio or Preserve aspect ratio when geometric accuracy is your priority. Select Full-screen or Full panel only when filling every part of the CRT is more important than exact shapes. Center or No scaling is useful for a deliberately unscaled, crisp image, provided you accept a smaller active picture. Integer scaling is useful when the source and output dimensions form an exact whole-number relationship and both the hardware and software support it.

Set a real 4:3 resolution in the game

  1. Open the game’s video or display settings. Look for a resolution that is explicitly 4:3, such as 1024×768 or 1280×960. Use only a mode that your CRT and the adapter explicitly support.
  2. Prefer a proportion-preserving option. Labels such as “aspect ratio,” “keep proportions,” or “pillarbox” indicate that the game will avoid non-uniform stretching. If the game offers a separate field-of-view setting, check it after changing resolution because some engines recalculate the visible area.
  3. Apply the mode and inspect a known circle or square. A circular reticle, round character model, or square menu icon is a quick geometry check. If it is visibly elongated, the frame is still being stretched later in the signal path.
  4. Test fullscreen and windowed output. Steam Support recommends changing the in-game resolution and switching between fullscreen and windowed modes when aspect-ratio problems persist. One mode may hand scaling to the GPU while another is handled by the game or desktop compositor.

A 4:3 game mode is preferable because the engine renders the correct shape from the start. It does not guarantee a perfect result: the GPU, converter, and CRT can still apply another scaling step, so verify the final image rather than trusting the menu label alone.

Configure GPU scaling without fighting the game

NVIDIA controls

In the NVIDIA display-scaling controls, choose Aspect ratio to preserve proportions, Full-screen to stretch to the entire display, or No scaling to center the original-size image. If you use a supported Turing-and-later GPU and want hard-edged integer enlargement, enable integer scaling when the control panel exposes it and the source-to-output dimensions permit a whole-number factor.

AMD controls

AMD’s GPU-scaling options are Preserve aspect ratio, Full panel, and Center. Preserve aspect ratio corresponds to a proportionally scaled image with borders as needed; Full panel fills the panel and can distort the picture; Center avoids scaling and leaves the source-size image in the middle. AMD documents this behavior for lower-resolution content delivered through DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent double scaling

Double scaling occurs when the game first resizes its frame and the driver then resizes that result again. It can produce unexpected borders, softness, or a second aspect-ratio error. Start with a 4:3 game mode and aspect-preserving driver scaling. If the game already outputs a correctly sized 4:3 image, try Center or No scaling to determine whether the driver was adding an unnecessary filter. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which stage changes the geometry.

When the game offers only widescreen modes

Some modern games expose only 16:9 or ultrawide resolutions. You can still avoid distortion by making the desktop or virtual output 4:3 and allowing a compositor or GPU scaler to preserve the source ratio.

  1. Set the host desktop to a supported 4:3 mode. Steam Support lists changing the host desktop resolution as a remedy for aspect-ratio problems. Choose a resolution and refresh rate that the CRT and converter both accept.
  2. Try windowed or borderless mode. A game that refuses a 4:3 fullscreen mode may render inside a 4:3 desktop area. Keep the driver’s scaling mode on Aspect ratio or Preserve aspect ratio so the widescreen frame is not independently stretched.
  3. Use a virtual output on Linux or SteamOS. Gamescope can create a virtual resolution for the game and scale its output. ValveSoftware documents gamescope -h 720 -H 1440 -S integer -- %command% for integer scaling. Use -S stretch instead when the game should fill the window, accepting the possibility of geometric distortion.

Integer scaling is not automatically sharper in every setup. It works best when the source dimensions can be multiplied by a whole number to fit the destination and when no later stage applies fractional scaling. If the CRT or converter has a different active area, you may still see borders or need to adjust the monitor’s geometry.

Check the digital-to-analog signal path

Most current GPUs expose DisplayPort, HDMI, or DVI, while a PC CRT commonly accepts VGA. The connector shape alone does not tell you whether a conversion will work. An active DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter is the usual path when DisplayPort is the available output; HDMI-to-VGA is an alternative when HDMI is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Match the GPU output connector to the adapter input.
  • Match the adapter output to the CRT’s VGA input.
  • Confirm the adapter supports the exact 4:3 resolution you intend to use.
  • Confirm it supports the required refresh rate, not just the resolution.
  • Check whether the adapter is active and performs digital-to-analog conversion rather than merely changing the plug shape.

AMD’s documentation confirms GPU scaling over DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort, but the converter remains a separate compatibility limit. A mode visible in the game or operating system may fail to lock on the CRT if the adapter cannot generate that timing. Test the lowest-risk supported mode first, then increase resolution or refresh rate only after a stable picture is established.

Use the CRT’s own geometry controls last

Once the game and driver are configured, use the CRT’s on-screen geometry controls to position and size the active raster. A picture that is proportionally correct can still appear too narrow, too wide, too high, or too low because CRTs store geometry per signal timing. Adjusting the monitor before fixing the source ratio can hide the real problem and make another game look wrong.

Save or note the geometry for each important resolution and refresh rate if the monitor provides separate memories. Changing from 1024×768 to 1280×960, or changing refresh rate, can recall a different geometry profile. Do not compensate for a stretched image by expanding one axis on the CRT; that changes the physical display shape rather than correcting the source mapping.

Why black bars can be the correct result

Black bars are unused pixels reserved to keep the image’s original proportions. They are not evidence of a damaged CRT. On a 4:3 display, a widescreen frame may be letterboxed with bars above and below; other source-and-display combinations produce side bars. The location depends on which ratio is narrower and where scaling occurs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If bars are acceptable, Aspect ratio or Preserve aspect ratio is the safest choice. If the bars are uneven, check for a second scaler: the game may be adding its own borders while the driver is also scaling the already-letterboxed frame. Switching between fullscreen and windowed output, then resetting the driver to an aspect-preserving mode, often reveals which layer is responsible.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Everything fills the CRT but looks distorted

Full-screen or Full panel scaling is probably active, or the game is forcing a non-4:3 mode. Select a real 4:3 resolution in the game and switch the driver to Aspect ratio or Preserve aspect ratio. If you deliberately want full coverage, retain the stretch setting and accept that circles and interface elements will not retain their original proportions.

The image is correct but surrounded by large borders

No scaling or Center may be active, or the source resolution is much smaller than the CRT’s current mode. Choose Aspect ratio/Preserve aspect ratio for a larger proportional image, or keep Center when maximum sharpness and an unfiltered presentation matter more.

The game shows only a black screen or “out of range” message

The selected timing may exceed the CRT or active adapter’s supported resolution or refresh rate. Return to a known supported mode, then test other 4:3 resolutions one at a time. Verify the adapter’s specification rather than assuming that a mode listed by the GPU will be delivered successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fullscreen is wrong but windowed mode works

The two modes are likely using different scaling paths. Keep the working windowed or borderless mode, set the desktop to a supported 4:3 resolution, and use aspect-preserving GPU scaling. Steam Support specifically recommends switching fullscreen and windowed modes as part of troubleshooting.

Text or pixel art looks soft

Fractional scaling or multiple filtering passes may be active. Try Center/No scaling for a one-to-one image, or integer scaling where supported and where the dimensions permit a whole-number factor. A converter can also add a scaling stage, so compare a lower-resolution 4:3 mode with a higher one that the adapter explicitly supports.

A practical decision checklist

  • Want the correct shape: choose 1024×768, 1280×960, or another explicitly supported 4:3 mode; use Aspect ratio or Preserve aspect ratio.
  • Want every part of the CRT filled: use Full-screen or Full panel, but expect geometric distortion when the source is not 4:3.
  • Want the crispest unscaled pixels: use Center or No scaling and accept a smaller active image.
  • Want sharp enlarged pixels: use integer scaling when your GPU, software, and dimensions support it.
  • Game has no 4:3 option: try a 4:3 desktop, windowed or borderless output, and aspect-preserving driver scaling; on Linux or SteamOS, consider Gamescope.
  • Using a modern GPU with a VGA CRT: verify an active DisplayPort-to-VGA or HDMI-to-VGA path, plus supported resolution and refresh rate.

What developers and players can reasonably expect

Valve’s Steamworks guidance asks developers to try to support different display aspect ratios, but support varies by engine and title. A game may render a true 4:3 frame, crop a widescreen camera, add its own bars, or expose only modern panel modes. The operating system and driver cannot restore information that the game never renders, so a perfect 4:3 presentation is not guaranteed for every release.

Exact behavior depends on the game’s engine, selected render resolution, GPU driver, adapter, CRT model, and refresh rate. There is no authoritative general failure-rate or benchmark figure for modern Steam games on 4:3 CRTs; troubleshooting therefore has to follow the signal path from game settings to driver, converter, and monitor rather than rely on a universal percentage or one-size-fits-all adapter.
