Roads link courses, and racing is joined by Knockout Tour and Free Roam. The “new generation” label is Nintendo’s characterization of those changes, not an independent industry classification.
Why Nintendo chose the name Mario Kart World
In Nintendo’s account, the project began with a question about what could follow Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Producer Kosuke Yabuki said the team felt that game had perfected the established approach of racing on individual courses. Rather than focus only on adding more courses—a direction he said could have suited a numbered sequel—the team wanted players to drive around a large world. That shift in concept led to the name Mario Kart World. Nintendo of America’s developer interview, published May 21, 2025, describes the design rationale.
The distinction matters: the name signals Nintendo’s ambition for a different structure, while the generational claim remains the producer’s view of what that structure means for the series.
What changes in the way the game is played?
Courses connect through roads
Instead of treating each course only as a separate destination, the game connects courses with roads across a large world. Nintendo describes road racing between courses as part of the experience. The world therefore gives the races a broader setting than a sequence of isolated tracks, though Nintendo’s interview does not provide independent comparative measurements against earlier games.

Knockout Tour takes racing across the world
Knockout Tour is one of the modes Nintendo points to when explaining the new structure: it carries racing across the world rather than relying only on a conventional three-lap course format. Nintendo presents it as one of the concrete ways the connected setting affects play.
Free Roam adds driving outside races
Free Roam lets players drive around the world beyond the standard race format. It is a distinct extension of the driving experience, rather than another name for a lap race.

Conditions can change
Nintendo says the time of day and weather can change. That means the world’s presentation is not limited to one fixed time-and-weather combination, although the interview does not quantify how often conditions change or measure their effects on play.
Does a new concept make Mario Kart harder to pick up?
Nintendo says it aimed to preserve familiar play and approachability alongside the new structure. Yabuki’s interview discusses Smart Steering and route cues, as well as optional techniques such as Wall Ride and Rail Ride. Those supports and techniques reflect Nintendo’s stated approach; the interview does not establish that every new feature will suit every player.
