No—Valve has not officially confirmed Half-Life 3. The new clue is that composer and audio artist Mike Morasky said “HLX” during a public GameSoundCon panel, then fellow Valve sound designer David Feise appeared to joke that Morasky had said it only once. “HLX” has been linked by dataminers and insider reports to an unannounced Half-Life project, so the exchange sounded like an accidental codename leak. It still does not identify HLX, prove it is Half-Life 3, or establish a release date, platform, trailer or playable build.
What did the Valve developer actually say?
During the GameSoundCon session “Valve’s Approach to an Open and Flexible Audio Engine,” Morasky was answering a technical question about voice counts and high-dynamic-range (HDR) audio. He said: “In fact, I think Deadlock has their own version of HDR. HLX has its own version, so on and so forth.”

Ars Technica’s longer transcription places the line in a discussion of Valve’s HDR system: “Our HDR system is basically that’s one of the three pieces that come together to make an HDR that you can easily optimize. And in fact, I think Deadlock has their own version of HDR. HLX has its own version, so on and so forth.” Morasky did not define HLX, call it Half-Life 3, or describe a game in development. The surrounding conversation was about audio technology, not announcements.
The panel is available as a public Vimeo recording, allowing the wording and context to be checked rather than inferred from a social-media paraphrase.

Why did the “nice work” reaction make it look like a leak?
PC Gamer reports that Valve sound designer David Feise immediately responded “nice work,” followed later by “Good job—you only said HLX once!” Ars Technica describes the same apparent exchange. That reaction matters because it sounds like colleagues recognized “HLX” as a term Morasky was not meant to say publicly.
It is still circumstantial evidence. Feise’s joke does not explain what the letters mean, whether they refer to a game, or whether the project remains active. GamesRadar characterized the moment as a strong nod while noting that Morasky stopped short of promising a new Half-Life.
What is HLX supposed to be?
HLX is an unidentified Valve term that fans associate with a rumored Half-Life project. The association comes from datamining and insider reporting, not from a Valve announcement.

The 2024 data-string clue
PC Gamer reported that an HLX-like string appeared in a Counter-Strike 2 update in early 2024. It resembled HLVR, the reported codename associated with Half-Life: Alyx. A similar-looking string can suggest shared naming or technology, but it cannot establish that two entries are the same product.
Other explanations remain possible
Valve watchers have proposed that HLX could be an internal technology, another project, a joke, or a codename for a Half-Life game. The public clip supplies no expansion for the acronym and no description of a campaign, characters, hardware target or production status.
Did Valve just confirm Half-Life 3?
No. The strongest defensible wording is that a Valve developer appears to have let the rumored codename HLX slip during a public panel. Calling that an official Half-Life 3 confirmation goes beyond the evidence.

| Interpretation | Directly observed | What is inferred | What is still absent |
|---|---|---|---|
| HLX is a real internal term | Morasky said “HLX”; Feise appeared to recognize it. | The term has a specific Valve meaning. | No public definition or documentation. |
| HLX is a Half-Life codename | Datamining and insider reports connect HLX-like strings with a rumored project. | The spoken term refers to that project. | No confirmation from Valve. |
| HLX is Half-Life 3 | Fans connect the rumor to the long-awaited sequel. | The project’s final title is Half-Life 3 and development is advanced. | No title, trailer, date, platform or product announcement. |
What has Valve officially announced?
Nothing in the cited coverage identifies HLX as a released or announced product. Valve has not named it, shown a trailer, set a launch date, listed platforms or opened preorders. Reports that the project is playable end-to-end come from Valve watchers or alleged insiders and remain unverified.
That distinction is important for a company whose internal codenames can cover prototypes, tools and cancelled work. A public employee reference demonstrates that the term is used inside or around Valve; it does not establish the project’s final name, scope or launch timing.
When did the clues appear?
| Date | Development in the rumor |
|---|---|
| 2023 | GamesRadar said Morasky referred to “both the Half-Life games” he had worked on, then corrected himself to “well, game.” His officially cited Half-Life credit is Half-Life: Alyx, which made the correction notable. |
| Early 2024 | PC Gamer reported an HLX-like string in a Counter-Strike 2 update and noted its resemblance to the reported HLVR codename. |
| 2025 | PC Gamer recorded renewed speculation and listed alternatives: HLX could be an internal technology, another project, a joke or Half-Life 3. No announcement followed. |
| 21 October 2026 | The GameSoundCon panel took place, according to reports surrounding the recording. Morasky used “HLX” while discussing HDR audio. |
| 22–23 October 2026 | PC Gamer, Kotaku, GamesRadar, Ars Technica and VGC published reports treating the remark as a new clue while stressing the lack of official confirmation. |
How should you interpret the clip?
- Separate the recording from the rumor. The spoken word and colleague reaction are directly observable; the Half-Life connection is an inference built from earlier reports.
- Check the technical context. Morasky was comparing HDR audio implementations, so HLX may identify a technology or project subsystem rather than a consumer-facing game.
- Look for an official product signal. A named announcement, trailer, platform listing or release information would be stronger evidence than a codename slip.
- Treat progress claims as unverified. “Playable,” “near launch” and similar descriptions are not established by the panel.
For now, the evidence supports “real internal-sounding term, uncertain identity.” “Valve confirmed Half-Life 3” is not supported.

What should fans expect next?
The clip will likely keep speculation alive because it connects a public recording, a colleague’s knowing reaction and earlier HLX-like data. None of those sources supplies the missing fundamentals: what HLX expands to, which team owns it, whether the work is active, or when—and on what platform—anything could ship. Until Valve provides those details, the responsible conclusion is an intriguing apparent slip, not an announcement.

What does HLX stand for?
No public source cited here gives HLX an expansion. It may be an internal codename or shorthand whose letters do not map directly to a final product name.
Could HLX be an audio-engine feature instead of a game?
Yes. Morasky mentioned HLX while comparing HDR audio systems, so a technology, subsystem or tool is a plausible alternative to a standalone game. The clip does not resolve that ambiguity.

Where can I watch the remark myself?
Look for the public Vimeo recording of the GameSoundCon panel titled “Valve’s Approach to an Open and Flexible Audio Engine.” Watching the surrounding answer is important because the line appears in a technical HDR discussion.
Does the clip prove Half-Life 3 is currently in development?
No. It proves only that Morasky used the term HLX publicly. Development status, team size, completion level and release timing remain undisclosed.
