Pokémon HOME, Pokémon Champions, and Pokémon Sleep were taken offline together for emergency maintenance on October 21, 2026. The Pokémon Support notice confirms the coordinated shutdown but does not identify a technical cause. The strongest explanation is a security response to two critical PHP vulnerabilities disclosed and patched the same day—an inference supported by the timing, the scope of the outage, and the services’ restoration on October 22, not an officially confirmed statement that Pokémon’s servers used PHP.

Why were Pokémon HOME, Champions, and Sleep down at the same time?

All three services were intentionally disabled for emergency maintenance, rather than suffering three unrelated app failures. Pokémon Support said the affected services would be unavailable while work was ongoing and that progress updates would come through each title’s official account.

The simultaneous shutdown points to shared backend or operational work. Pokémon has not publicly identified the infrastructure involved, so the precise technical change remains undisclosed.

Was the outage connected to a PHP security emergency?

The timing makes coordinated security remediation the most credible explanation, although Pokémon has not publicly confirmed PHP as the cause. On October 21, the PHP project released fixes for two critical vulnerabilities that could allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute code remotely on PHP installations serving web requests.

What the PHP advisories said

The vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, were each rated CVSS 4.0 9.2 by the PHP security team. One involved out-of-memory corruption; the other involved stale request-owned global state. PHP described both as serious enough to require immediate updates.

The fixed upstream branches were PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, and 8.2.35. CISA called the issue “php2shell,” urged organizations to patch immediately, and advised taking systems offline when they could not be updated while monitoring for suspicious PHP-worker behavior.

Why this is still an inference

The emergency PHP releases and the Pokémon shutdown occurred on the same date, and three online services were taken down together before returning the next day. That combination strongly supports a precautionary patching event. However, the Pokémon notice did not name PHP, disclose a vulnerability, or say that an attack had occurred, so it would be inaccurate to present the PHP link as an official technical confirmation.

When did each service go offline and come back?

Pokémon Support announced emergency maintenance on October 21, 2026. Pokémon Sleep’s notice specified a 2:00 p.m. start and said no end time had been determined at that point.

Service Shutdown information Reported restoration
Pokémon Champions Included in Pokémon Support’s October 21 emergency-maintenance notice Reported back first on October 22, according to updates cited by Nintendo Life
Pokémon HOME Included in Pokémon Support’s October 21 emergency-maintenance notice Reported back after Champions on October 22
Pokémon Sleep Maintenance began at 2:00 p.m. on October 21; no end time was initially given Reported complete at about 10:00 a.m. BST on October 22

Nintendo Life’s October 22 report, citing the services’ official account updates, said Champions returned first, HOME followed, and Sleep was the last to finish. It described all three as operating normally afterward.

Was Pokémon hacked, and did players lose their data?

No cited announcement confirms a breach, unauthorized access, or lost Pokémon data. A critical remote-code-execution vulnerability creates a reason to isolate and patch servers, but an emergency maintenance window alone does not prove that attackers reached Pokémon systems.

Players should therefore distinguish between a service outage and a confirmed data incident. The available notices establish planned downtime and later restoration; they do not establish deletion, corruption, account theft, or exposure of HOME transfers, Champions progress, or Sleep records.

What should players do when the services are unavailable?

  1. Check the official Pokémon Support notice and the affected game’s official account for maintenance updates.
  2. Do not repeatedly reinstall the apps or reset account data; those steps cannot restore a server-side service undergoing maintenance.
  3. Wait for the service to be declared available, then update the app through the device’s official app store if an update is offered.
  4. If a problem remains after restoration, record the account, device platform, app version, and exact error message before contacting Pokémon Support.

For organizations running PHP themselves, the relevant action is different: apply the fixed upstream release for the deployed branch, or isolate the unpatchable web-facing system until it can be updated. That infrastructure guidance comes from the PHP project and CISA, not from Pokémon’s player notices.

What is the bottom line on the outage?

Pokémon HOME, Champions, and Sleep went down together because Pokémon deliberately placed them in emergency maintenance on October 21, 2026. A same-day PHP security emergency is the best-supported explanation, but remains an informed inference because Pokémon did not identify its backend technology or confirm a vulnerability. Official-account updates cited in reporting indicate that all three services were restored on October 22, with Champions first and Sleep last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pokémon HOME down for everyone?

The October 21 notice described a service-wide maintenance outage, so users could not access HOME while that maintenance was active. Availability was reported restored on October 22; an individual error after restoration may instead indicate an account, app, or regional issue.

When will Pokémon Champions be back?

Champions was reported to return first on October 22, 2026, after the October 21 emergency shutdown. The original maintenance notice did not provide a guaranteed completion time.

Why was Pokémon Sleep under emergency maintenance?

Pokémon Sleep’s official notice said maintenance was intended to improve game stability and began at 2:00 p.m. on October 21. The PHP-security connection is a strong timing-based explanation, not a technical cause confirmed in that notice.

Should I change my Pokémon account password after the outage?

The cited announcements do not report a breach or account compromise, so they do not establish a password-reset requirement. Use a unique password and enable any security controls available on your account, and follow Pokémon’s instructions if it later announces an incident.
