Pombon is already my pick for Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves: it is a Fire-type puppy with a friendly personality and a striking heat-glowing detail. That makes it an easy favorite on character appeal alone—not a proven gameplay winner. The official announcement has not revealed the evolutions, movesets, or performance data needed to rank the starters strategically.
What makes Pombon an appealing first pick
The Pokémon Company identifies Pombon as the Puppy Pokémon, a Fire type with the ability Blaze. It stands 0.4 m tall and weighs 6.7 kg. Its official description says an organ in its lungs generates heat, making the area below its throat glow faintly, and calls it “guileless and friendly.” The official Pombon page gives this small starter a clear visual hook and an approachable character concept.
That is enough to make Pombon compelling if you choose a partner by design, personality, or type. It is not evidence that Pombon will be the strongest option in battle.
How Pombon compares with Browt and Gecqua
The announced first partners offer three different types and character impressions. The descriptions help distinguish their personalities, but do not establish gameplay advantages.

#1 Best Overall
| Starter | Confirmed type and ability | Official concept and description |
|---|---|---|
| Browt | Grass; Overgrow | Bean Chick Pokémon; energetic and a little clumsy |
| Pombon | Fire; Blaze | Puppy Pokémon; guileless and friendly |
| Gecqua | Water; Torrent | Water Gecko Pokémon; intelligent and shrewd |
Those details come from The Pokémon Company’s starter descriptions. Browt may be the one for players drawn to an energetic, slightly clumsy character; Gecqua may suit those who like a clever, shrewd one. If Pombon’s friendly puppy design is the one you connect with, that is a perfectly good reason to choose it.
Is Pombon actually the best starter?
There is not enough announced information to make that case objectively. The official materials do not provide starter evolutions, movesets, or comparative performance data. The revealed types and abilities identify each Pokémon’s starting profile, but they do not show how the partners will develop or perform in the finished games.
So “obvious” is best understood as a personal verdict: Pombon has an especially appealing design and personality for players who want a friendly Fire-type companion. It is not a confirmed consensus, and there is no announced basis for calling it the strongest starter.

Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are planned as Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives, with a simultaneous worldwide release planned for 2027. The announcement describes an open world of windswept islands and a vast ocean. These are announced plans, and release details may change. See The Pokémon Company’s official announcement for the game reveal.
