The warning that GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 SUPER inventory might dry up before the next generation was a forecast published on October 4, 2024—not a current stock report or an official NVIDIA announcement. NVIDIA later announced its RTX 50 Series on January 6, 2025, and began launching its first desktop cards that month. The original report’s specific RTX 4080 SUPER production and supply timeline was presented as apparent reporting, not confirmed by NVIDIA.
What the October 2024 inventory report said
HotHardware’s October 4, 2024 article argued that RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 SUPER stock could become harder to find as NVIDIA prepared its next generation. It described the RTX 4080 SUPER as apparently nearing the end of production in October, with supply expected to run out by November. Those dates were reported as an expectation, not a statement from NVIDIA; the article did not establish that the forecast was an official production schedule. The timing made the concern plausible as a buying question: a product transition can leave fewer cards available from the outgoing generation. But the article’s forecast should not be mistaken for proof that every RTX 4090 or RTX 4080 SUPER disappeared on a particular date, or that a shortage affected every region.

What happened next: NVIDIA launched RTX 50
NVIDIA announced the GeForce RTX 50 Series for desktop and laptop computers on January 6, 2025. Its first desktop launches were the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 on January 30, followed by the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 in February. Those later launches confirm that the successor generation arrived; they do not independently verify the reported 2024 production cutoff or November supply exhaustion.

At announcement, NVIDIA described Blackwell as “the engine of AI” for PC gamers, developers and creatives. The company also claimed the RTX 5090 could deliver up to 2x the performance of the RTX 4090, attributing that result to Blackwell architecture innovations and DLSS 4. That is NVIDIA’s qualified vendor claim, not a guarantee of twice the performance in every game or workload, nor an independent benchmark result. NVIDIA’s RTX 50 Series announcement.

NVIDIA’s January 30 launch post listed ASUS, Colorful, Gainward, GALAX, GIGABYTE, INNO3D, KFA2, MSI, Palit, PNY and ZOTAC as add-in-card providers, and said Founders Edition cards were available in limited quantities through Best Buy. The story is best read as a dated warning about a possible transition-period squeeze, not as a present-day buying guide. The sources cited here do not establish October 2026 stock, street prices, regional availability, or current listings for the RTX 4090, RTX 4080 SUPER, or RTX 50 cards. Anyone comparing them now needs to check current retailers in their own region and evaluate performance for the games or workloads they actually use; the launch prices and NVIDIA’s up-to-2x claim cannot substitute for those checks.
