Some Fortnite players argued that War Machine’s Hover Jets gave opponents too much mobility and, paired with powerful Marvel gear, made Fortnitemares’ new Halloween items feel less useful. Epic vaulted the jets on October 15, 2024, and returned Shuri’s Black Panther Claws to the loot pool. The announcement recorded the change but did not explain why Epic made it.
Why were players complaining about War Machine’s Hover Jets?
The complaint was about how the jets affected fights, not simply that they were a Marvel item. Players said the mobility could help opponents control engagements from the air, especially when combined with War Machine’s Arsenal. Some also felt that the powerful loadout made it harder for Fortnitemares’ new Halloween-themed gear to compete.
That concern had surfaced before the event. In an August 20 report, GameSpot’s Phil Owen described War Machine’s Arsenal—particularly alongside the Hover Jets—as difficult to fight and said it had contributed to a perceived meta in which players felt they needed the same equipment or risked being killed by someone who had it. Owen was characterizing the balance debate, not reporting a measured statistic. The report also noted that Epic’s balance changes at that point had not changed the Hover Jets: GameSpot’s August 20 coverage.
After further mobility nerfs drew complaints in August, some players carried that criticism into Fortnitemares, saying the jets made the event’s new items harder to enjoy or use effectively. Contemporary community posts show examples of that view, not how widely it was held. Dexerto’s August 26 report covered reactions to the mobility changes.

What did Fortnitemares add, and why did the gear feel at odds?
Epic’s October 12, 2024 announcement described Fortnitemares as running through the end of Chapter 5 Season 4. Its featured additions included Boom Billy, a rideable Chainsaw, the returning Witch Broom, and Horde Rush. Against that event backdrop, critics argued that a strong movement option paired with potent offensive gear could overshadow the new Halloween items—not that Epic had declared those items ineffective.
The disagreement involved competing priorities rather than a demonstrated, universal match outcome:

- Event-item visibility: Some players wanted Fortnitemares’ new horror-themed gear to have more room to shape matches.
- Keeping a popular movement item: Other players objected to losing the jets, illustrating the trade-off between retaining an appealing mobility tool and addressing complaints that it dominated fights.
These are arguments visible in contemporaneous coverage and discussion, not measured comparisons of item strength or player opinion. The October 14 community thread about the change includes both people welcoming the vaulting and people unhappy about it: the discussion on r/FortNiteBR.
Did Epic vault the Hover Jets during Fortnitemares?
Yes. Epic’s official Fortnitemares announcement includes an update dated October 15, 2024: “War Machine’s Hover Jets have been vaulted, and Shuri’s Black Panther Claws are now back in the loot pool.” The claws’ return happened alongside the vaulting, but Epic did not describe them as a direct replacement for the jets. Did player complaints cause the change?
Epic’s note confirms what changed, but does not give a reason. The timing followed visible player criticism, yet the official announcement does not connect that criticism to the decision. The available comments are self-selected, and the cited coverage provides no representative poll, usage statistics, or direct explanation from Epic. It is accurate to say some players thought the jets were hurting the event; it is not established that this was a broad consensus or why Epic vaulted them.
