Some international game developers said they would avoid or reconsider travel to GDC 2026 in San Francisco, citing US travel concerns, safety perceptions and expense. The evidence points to a real change in sentiment, but it does not show how many people canceled GDC plans for those reasons: a widely cited survey asked about travel to the United States generally, while the reported 30% attendance decline was not broken down by nationality or cause.
What happened at GDC 2026?
The Game Developers Conference, presented as the GDC Festival of Gaming, ran March 9–13, 2026, at San Francisco’s Moscone Center. Before the event, some international developers told reporters they were reluctant to travel to the US. Afterward, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that visitor numbers fell 30% year over year.
Those two facts are related context, not proof that international visitors caused the decline. The visitor figure is event-wide, and the reporting does not establish what share of the change involved international attendees or how much any particular concern contributed.
What does the survey say about international travel?
The 2026 State of the Game Industry survey by GDC Festival of Gaming and Informa asked about US travel and business, not attendance at GDC. Among respondents based outside the US, 31% said they had canceled US travel plans because of current immigration or gender-identity policies, and 33% said they were reconsidering future US travel plans. Among LGBTQ+ respondents, 47% said they had canceled US travel plans for those reasons. Separately, 60% of non-US industry leaders and investors said current US immigration policies affected their ability or desire to do business with American companies.

These figures describe survey respondents’ answers to different questions; none is a count of people who canceled GDC attendance. The survey cautions that its international sample was not fully representative of the global game-development community, and that changes to the survey make year-over-year comparisons difficult. Why were some developers reluctant to go?
Immigration policy and uncertainty at the border
In pre-event interviews, developers raised concerns about immigration policy and unpredictable border checks. Those are reported concerns, not evidence that every international traveler faced the same risk or that a particular traveler would be denied entry. GDC president Nina Brown advised international attendees to start visa applications early and consult their embassies about requirements specific to their circumstances, according to TechCrunch’s reporting before the conference.

Safety perceptions and the San Francisco setting
Interviewees also described unease about traveling to the US and about the conference’s downtown San Francisco location. These are individual perceptions, not a citywide safety assessment. In event-week coverage, Godot Foundation Executive Director Emilio Coppola said, “We never felt super safe, but now we are not willing to risk it,” describing his own view rather than speaking for all developers. Ars Technica reported his comments.
The full cost of attending
The pass was only one part of the expense. Pre-event interviews cited the combined cost of travel, lodging, food and tickets. GDC’s 2025 announcement for the 2026 event set a five-day pass starting price of $649 and said its simplified pass structure was 45% more affordable than the prior year. That comparison referred to GDC’s pass structure, not the total cost of a trip. The event’s official registration announcement also quoted GDC Executive Director of Innovation and Growth Mark DeLoura calling for the industry to “build bridges.”

Industry layoffs and the 2020 cancellation
Reporting placed travel concerns alongside wider industry conditions. The Chronicle discussed layoffs and hostility toward foreign visitors as context for the lower visitor count, but did not assign a causal share to either. Event-week interviews also described GDC’s 2020 cancellation as a turning point for some potential attendees. That is an account of individual decisions, not a measured explanation for the 2026 attendance change.

The available figures cannot answer that. The reported 30% decline covers GDC visitors overall; it is not an international-attendance statistic. The survey records non-US respondents’ general US travel plans, not GDC cancellations. Interviews establish that some people expressed reluctance, but they do not measure how many stayed away. Cost, layoffs, immigration concerns and safety perceptions all appear in coverage, yet the evidence does not isolate their effects.

For developers deciding whether to attend a future US conference, assess the total trip cost, current entry requirements for your nationality and circumstances, the value of in-person meetings for your role, and current safety and accessibility information from official sources. Do not treat an event’s pass price as the price of attending, or assume that another conference or remote option offers equivalent access without checking its program and participation details.
