If Sticky Notes keeps crashing, start with the least destructive fixes: check the app version, update it through Microsoft Store if it is 3.7.106 or earlier, sign in with the Microsoft account that originally synchronized your notes, and run Settings > Sync now. Before using Reset, uninstalling, or changing app data, copy the local plum.sqlite database somewhere safe. Then try Settings > Apps > Sticky Notes > Advanced options > Repair. Reset or reinstall should be the escalation steps, because unsynchronized notes can be lost.
Crashes and apparently missing notes usually fall into two categories: a damaged local database or a synchronization problem between Sticky Notes and your Microsoft account. The sequence below separates those causes while protecting the only local copy of notes that may not have reached the cloud.
Why does Sticky Notes keep crashing or close unexpectedly?
A crash can be caused by an obsolete app build, a sign-in or synchronization mismatch, or corruption in Sticky Notes’ local database. A 2025 Microsoft External Staff moderator described recent crashes and missing notes as commonly linked to “either a corrupted local database or a sync issue between Sticky Notes and your Microsoft account.”

That threshold is a support requirement, not a claim that every older installation will crash on every computer.
Why notes can look deleted when they are not
- You may be signed out after a Windows or app change.
- The active Microsoft account may differ from the account that created the notes.
- A new computer will show only notes that have synchronized to the account.
- Sticky Notes may open one note while the rest remain in the hidden Notes list.
- A local database can be damaged even though a synchronized copy still exists online.
Microsoft states that deleting a note is permanent and cannot be undone. Therefore, check the Notes list and synchronization status before deleting, resetting, or reinstalling anything.

What should I do first when Sticky Notes crashes?
Use this order: update, verify the account, force synchronization, inspect the Notes list, and only then change app data. These first checks are low-risk and can restore access without touching the local database.
- Check the installed version. Open Sticky Notes, select its settings, and inspect About. If the version is 3.7.106 or earlier, install the current Sticky Notes release from Microsoft Store.
- Confirm the Microsoft account. Sign in with the account used when the notes were created. If another account is active, sign out and try the original account. A correct password is not enough if it belongs to a different Microsoft account.
- Force a sync. Open the notes list, open Sticky Notes settings, and choose Sync now. Leave the app open long enough for the operation to complete, then check the list again.
- Check another supported access point. On a second device, use the same account with the current OneNote experience or another supported Sticky Notes access path. Microsoft documents access to synchronized notes through OneNote and Outlook.com.
- Look in the full Notes list. If one note opens, select that note’s ellipsis menu, choose Notes list, then search or scroll. Do not assume that the note currently on screen is the entire collection.
If the app crashes before you can reach its settings, open Windows Settings directly and continue with the account, app-version, and repair checks below. Do not jump straight to Reset simply because the app window will not stay open.

How do I back up Sticky Notes before repairing or resetting it?
Back up the local database before any operation that can remove app data. Microsoft’s moderator guidance identifies the database as plum.sqlite in this folder:

- Close Sticky Notes completely. If it remains in the taskbar or notification area, exit it there as well.
- Paste the folder path into File Explorer’s address bar and press Enter.
- Copy
plum.sqliteto a different folder, another internal drive, or removable storage. A USB flash drive is a practical physical destination for this backup; it is not a Microsoft-endorsed product recommendation. - Keep the original file unchanged. Work only on the copied file if a technician or recovery process later asks for it.
This backup matters because Reset, uninstalling, or database corruption can remove notes that never synchronized. A copy of plum.sqlite does not prove that every note is recoverable, but it preserves the local evidence instead of discarding it during troubleshooting.
Should I use Repair, Reset, or reinstall Sticky Notes?
Try Repair first. Reset and reinstall are more disruptive and should follow a verified database backup and an account-and-sync check.

How to run Repair
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Go to Apps > Sticky Notes > Advanced options.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Open Sticky Notes, sign in to the correct account, and choose Sync now.
Repair is the appropriate first app-level intervention because it does not carry the same data-removal warning as Reset. If Repair does not help, close the app and confirm that your backup exists before proceeding.
When is Reset justified?
Use Reset only after the database copy is safe and you have checked the cloud account for synchronized notes. Reset can remove local data, so notes created offline or during a failed sync may not return. After Reset, sign in with the original account and run Sync now to bring back notes that were synchronized.
What about uninstalling and reinstalling?
If Sticky Notes was uninstalled, Microsoft says reinstalling it from Microsoft Store and signing in can restore notes that had already synchronized. Reinstalling cannot be treated as a guaranteed recovery method for local-only notes. Verify the account and preserve plum.sqlite before uninstalling.
How can I recover notes that disappeared after a crash?
Recovery depends on whether the missing notes reached Microsoft’s synchronization service before the crash.

When the notes were synchronized
- Install or update Sticky Notes from Microsoft Store.
- Sign in with the exact Microsoft account used when the notes were created.
- Open the Notes list and run Sync now.
- Check the same account through a supported OneNote experience or Outlook.com, which Microsoft documents for synchronized Sticky Notes access.
Outlook.com export applies to notes that were previously synchronized. It does not turn an unsynchronized local database into a cloud backup after the fact.
When the notes were local only
Do not Reset, uninstall, or overwrite the app directory until plum.sqlite has been copied. Recovery then depends on the copied database remaining intact and on using a suitable recovery procedure; the available Microsoft guidance identifies the file to preserve but does not promise that every damaged database can be repaired.
When only one note appears
Open that note’s ellipsis menu and select Notes list. Search or scroll through the list before concluding that the other notes were deleted. This check is especially important after signing into a different account or moving to a new computer.

What should I do if Sticky Notes still crashes after Repair?
Separate a persistent app failure from a data problem. First restart Windows, confirm that Microsoft Store has completed the Sticky Notes update, and repeat the account and sync checks. If the app still fails, keep the plum.sqlite backup untouched and decide whether losing unsynchronized local data is acceptable before Reset.
A 2018 Microsoft Q&A response suggested signing out and back into Microsoft Store, running the Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter, and re-registering Store apps with PowerShell. Treat those as historical community advice rather than a guaranteed fix for current Windows builds. Use them only after the current update, backup, synchronization, and Repair sequence, and avoid running an unfamiliar PowerShell command copied from an unverified source.
If synchronized notes are visible online but the desktop app repeatedly crashes, the account data is likely intact and the local installation is the problem. If notes exist only in the local database copy, prioritize preserving that file over repeated resets.
How do I prevent another Sticky Notes data loss?
- Keep Sticky Notes updated through Microsoft Store instead of leaving a build at or below 3.7.106.
- Use one Microsoft account consistently on every device where the notes must appear.
- Run Sync now after creating important notes, especially before switching computers.
- Turn on the confirmation-before-delete option so an accidental click does not immediately remove a note.
- Before Reset, uninstalling, or any database change, copy
plum.sqliteout of the app folder. - When a note seems missing, check the Notes list and account identity before creating a replacement or deleting anything else.
