Masahiro Sakurai said that Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s Subspace Emissary cutscenes were posted online before the game’s release, undermining their intended role as in-game rewards. In 2013, he cited that experience when explaining why the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS Smash game would not have comparable story cutscenes. His later comments describe a shift toward fighter reveal videos made to be shared—not evidence that he remains upset today.
Why the Subspace Emissary cutscenes mattered
Super Smash Bros. Brawl included Subspace Emissary, an adventure mode built around the series’ crossover cast. Sakurai said he wanted its movie sequences to showcase those characters and reward players as they progressed through the adventure. The scenes were therefore meant to be experienced as part of playing, rather than encountered first outside the game.

As Sakurai put it, “You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene].” He also explained: “I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I’ve decided against having them.” GameSpot’s July 25, 2013 report and Nintendo Life’s report that day attributed the comments to his Famitsu column.
What happened before Brawl was released
In a later account, Sakurai said the cutscenes were posted online before the game came out: “We put a lot of money and effort into making them, but before the game even came out, people were posting them online.” GamesRadar+ reported on November 10, 2023, that he also pointed to overseas media outlets posting scenes using pre-release copies supplied to them. The account describes uploads in the plural; it does not identify one leak event or a single outlet as responsible.

His stated concern was about how the uploads changed the audience’s experience: if players had already watched a scene elsewhere, reaching it in the game could no longer deliver the same surprise or function as the reward he intended.
How the leak experience affected the next Smash game
In 2013, Sakurai said the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS entry would not include a story mode with cutscenes comparable to Subspace Emissary. His explanation tied that decision to the reduced impact of scenes viewed outside the game. It is a statement about that particular entry, not proof that every later Smash game followed the same rule.

The distinction is between progression-linked storytelling and content meant to circulate independently. Subspace Emissary’s scenes were tied to reaching points in an adventure; once shared elsewhere, they could be seen without that progression. Sakurai later described fighter reveal videos as a better fit for material audiences would share online.
Reveal videos offered a different purpose
“Knowing people would share these movies, I wanted something not tied to game progress, something that everyone could enjoy,” Sakurai said in the account reported by GamesRadar+. A reveal video announces a fighter to a broad audience; it does not need to reward completing a story chapter. Sharing is part of its purpose rather than a disruption to it.

- Welcome to a brawl for the ages, where anything can happen, anyone can show up and all bets are off. In multiplayer games, characters from all Nintendo universes meet up in Nintendo locales to duke it out. In the solo mode called "The Subspace Emissary," the world of Smash Bros. is invaded by an entity called the Ancient Minister and his army of creatures, called "The Primid." Normally, characters come alive in the world of Smash Bros. to do battle, then turn back into trophies
The formats also did not require one fixed production method. In an official retrospective, Nintendo describes reveal videos made as CG films as well as DLC reveals presented in-game with additional production work. The change was not simply from cutscenes to one uniform kind of movie; it was a move toward presentations that could be shared without depending on story progress.

The record supports a historical design rationale: Sakurai said pre-release uploads weakened the surprise and reward value of Brawl’s cutscenes, and he connected that experience to the Wii U and 3DS game’s approach. His later comments explain why shareable fighter reveals made sense. Those statements do not establish that he is still personally upset about the episode, as the headline’s “isn’t over” phrasing suggests.
The cited reports and Nintendo retrospective do not provide a reliable count of leaked scenes, viewers, outlets, or development cost. The account is about the effect Sakurai believed outside viewing had on the scenes’ intended role, not a quantified measure of the leak’s reach.
