Video games are not inherently a waste of time. They can offer enjoyment, social connection and opportunities to practice skills such as problem-solving—but those benefits depend on the game and the player’s experience, and they are not guaranteed. Play is worthwhile when it fits alongside sleep, responsibilities, relationships and other parts of life.
What can make playing a game worthwhile?
Many games ask players to set goals, make choices, respond to feedback and try different strategies. A review by psychologists Isabela Granic, Adam Lobel and Rutger C. M. E. Engels describes possible benefits across cognitive, motivational, emotional and social domains. That does not mean every game develops the same abilities, or that skills practiced in a game automatically transfer to school or work.
Some games involve problem-solving and learning
The review discusses research linking particular kinds of play with outcomes such as spatial skills, reasoning, memory and problem-solving. It also describes a long-term study in which adolescents who reported more strategic play, including role-playing games, showed improved problem-solving skills and school grades the following year. This is evidence about a particular pattern of play in a reviewed study—not proof that gaming generally raises grades.
An APA summary says research it describes associated spatial-thinking benefits especially with shooter games, not with puzzle or role-playing games, and linked children’s creativity with playing video games. These are findings reported for specific research, not guaranteed effects for every player or game.

Enjoyment and a sense of competence matter
A game can be worthwhile as recreation: it may be absorbing, enjoyable or satisfying to learn. The Oxford study of players of Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and Animal Crossing: New Horizons found a small positive association between measured play time and well-being. The researchers also suggested that subjective experiences such as enjoyment, competence and social connection might matter more than time alone. The study covered two games and found an association; it does not show that more gaming causes better mental health.
How can gaming be social?
Playing with others can be a way to spend time together, cooperate or make connections. In a U.S. teen survey conducted by Pew Research Center in 2024, cited by the American Psychiatric Association, 85% of teens said they played video games and 40% identified as gamers. Nearly three-fourths of teen players said spending time with others was one reason they played, and nearly half said they had made a friend while playing. These are survey responses, not proof that gaming itself caused social benefits.

Online play can also involve harassment. The same APA article reports that 80% of teens said harassment and bullying over games are a problem. Social connection and harmful interactions can both be part of gaming; the quality of the experience and the people involved matter.
When can gaming become a problem?
Time spent playing, by itself, does not establish that someone has a disorder. The World Health Organization says video gaming is a healthy hobby for most users, while a minority develop patterns associated with distress or impaired functioning. Its ICD-11 description of gaming disorder focuses on impairment or distress, not simply the number of hours played.

Pay attention to whether gaming persistently displaces daily activities or interferes with health, relationships or responsibilities. The WHO identifies possible concerns associated with gaming behavior such as insufficient physical activity, eyesight or hearing problems, musculoskeletal problems and sleep deprivation; these are not inevitable effects of gaming. The APA also describes warning signs including loss of control and continuing to play despite problems.
- Notice whether play is crowding out sleep, school or work, relationships, physical activity or other daily activities.
- Consider whether the player can stop or adjust play when needed, and whether gaming is continuing despite clear problems.
- If you are concerned about a child’s functioning or well-being, speak with an appropriately qualified health professional rather than trying to diagnose them yourself.
How to judge whether gaming is a good use of your time
There is no universal best genre or evidence-based time limit that applies to everyone. Instead, consider the experience and its place in the rest of the day:
Rank #4
- Cooperative Gameplay: Team up with friends in this 1-4 player adventure, working together to craft unique decks and overcome challenges
- Strategic Deckbuilding: Customize your deck with over 650 cards, including 112 small cards and 26 large cards

- Accessible Gameplay: With a 45-minute learning time and ages 12+ recommendation, it's perfect for both beginners and experienced gamers
- Immersive Fantasy Setting: Dive into a fantasy world filled with bizarre creatures and powerful relics
- What kind of play is it? A strategic challenge, a creative activity and a social session offer different experiences; research does not establish identical effects across genres.
- How does it feel? Enjoyment, a sense of competence and connection with others can make play rewarding, while stress or hostile interactions may detract from it.
- What is it displacing? Gaming is easier to fit into a balanced life when it coexists with sleep, responsibilities, relationships and other activities.
The strongest case for gaming is not that every game makes every player smarter or healthier. It is that games can be meaningful recreation, offer opportunities to practice certain skills and help people connect—provided the experience is positive and play remains compatible with everyday life.
