A monitor that dims, flashes black, or loses signal when a PC game enters full screen is usually reacting to a display-mode change rather than failing at random. Fullscreen Exclusive can renegotiate HDR, refresh rate, resolution, and the video signal; a mismatch between Windows and the game can leave the image dim or blank. Start by switching the game to Borderless Windowed, make Windows HDR and the game’s HDR setting agree, select a supported refresh rate, and test a current graphics driver with a known-good DisplayPort connection. A brief black flash during an HDR or mode transition can be normal. A blackout that persists, repeatedly reports no signal, or affects other applications needs systematic isolation.

Why does my monitor go dark when a game enters full screen?

Fullscreen transitions can switch the presentation mode, color format, HDR state, resolution, or refresh timing in a fraction of a second. The monitor then renegotiates the signal. If the new combination is supported, the screen may blink and return; if it is not, the panel can remain dim, black, or on a no-signal message.

PC games commonly expose three display modes: Fullscreen Exclusive (FSE), Windowed, and Borderless Windowed, as Intel’s support documentation explains. FSE gives the game direct control of the display path, so changing modes or using Alt+Tab can trigger a fresh handshake. Borderless Windowed keeps the desktop compositor in control and often avoids that handoff.

HDR is another frequent trigger. Windows HDR and the game’s HDR option are separate switches. NVIDIA advises using the same state in both places; leaving one enabled and the other disabled can produce a dim or incorrect image instead of a clean black screen.

Is a black flash normal, or is the monitor losing signal?

First classify the symptom by duration and what the monitor reports. Microsoft notes that a display may appear black temporarily when HDR turns on or off, including when a laptop is plugged in or unplugged. A short blank during a known mode change is different from a persistent loss of signal.

What you see Most likely meaning What to do
Black for a moment, then the game appears Normal HDR, refresh-rate, or resolution renegotiation Continue if it happens only during the transition and the image is stable afterward.
Image remains visible but is much darker or colors look wrong Windows HDR, in-game HDR, Auto HDR, or an incompatible color path Make HDR states match, then test with Auto HDR disabled.
Screen stays black and the monitor says no signal Unsupported timing, driver failure, cable/port problem, or a failed mode switch Return to Borderless Windowed, lower the refresh rate or resolution, and test another cable or port.
Only the laptop display changes when unplugging power Battery power policy changing HDR or display output Reconnect AC power and check the laptop’s battery HDR behavior.

There is no universal safe duration for a transition because monitors and connection standards vary. Judge it by recovery: if the picture returns without intervention, it is a transition; if you must reboot, reconnect the cable, or select another input, treat it as a fault to isolate.

Which fullscreen mode should I use?

Borderless Windowed is the best first test because it avoids the exclusive mode switch while retaining a full-screen image. It may not suit every game or multi-monitor setup, but it is a reversible diagnostic and often stops black screens during launch and Alt+Tab.

Mode How the display is controlled Use it when Trade-off
Fullscreen Exclusive The game takes exclusive control of the display output. You need the game’s exclusive-mode behavior and it remains stable. Mode changes can renegotiate HDR, timing, and signal; switching applications may blank the screen.
Borderless Windowed The game fills a desktop-sized window under Windows’ compositor. Exclusive full screen causes a blackout, dimming, or failed Alt+Tab. Some titles expose fewer display controls, and behavior depends on Windows’ compositor.
Windowed The game renders inside a resizable desktop window. You need a control case for troubleshooting or use other applications beside the game. It does not fill the display and can make scaling or input behavior less convenient.

Change the mode safely

  1. Open the game’s Video, Graphics, or Display menu.
  2. Change Display Mode from Fullscreen Exclusive to Borderless Windowed.
  3. Apply the setting and fully restart the game rather than relying only on Alt+Tab.
  4. Repeat the test with ordinary Windowed mode if Borderless Windowed still blanks the display.

If both windowed modes work while FSE fails, the monitor and GPU can usually render the game; the failure is tied to the exclusive transition or the timing it requests.

How do I make Windows HDR and the game’s HDR setting agree?

Use one HDR state for the entire test: turn HDR on in Windows and in an HDR-capable game, or turn it off in both for an SDR game. NVIDIA’s guidance specifically addresses dim or incorrect output caused by mismatched settings.

Set the Windows switch

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select the monitor used for the game if more than one display is connected.
  3. Open the HDR section and note whether Use HDR is on.
  4. Launch the game and set its HDR option to the same state. Restart the game after changing either switch.

For a game that is designed for SDR, switch Windows HDR off while testing. If the dimming disappears, the HDR path—not the panel’s backlight—is the variable to investigate. Re-enable HDR later only after confirming that the monitor, cable, and selected timing support it.

Can Auto HDR or windowed-game optimization cause the dimming?

Windows 11 can apply Auto HDR to supported games and can apply separate optimizations to windowed and borderless games. Those features alter how the game is presented, so disable them temporarily for the affected title and compare the result.

Disable the per-game features

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Select the affected game from the app list, or add its executable.
  3. Open the game’s Options entry and turn off Auto HDR for that title if the control is available.
  4. In the same per-game area, disable Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations for the test.
  5. Save, restart the game, and test the same scene and display mode.

Auto HDR expands the color range and brightness of supported games; disabling it is a diagnostic, not a claim that the feature is defective. If the picture is stable with it off, decide whether to leave it disabled for that game or re-enable it after selecting a compatible HDR configuration.

What refresh rate and resolution should I select?

A display’s refresh rate is the number of times per second its image refreshes. Windows must use a rate the monitor supports at the selected resolution; an unsupported combination can produce a blank screen when a game switches modes.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Choose the correct monitor from the display selector.
  3. Under display information, select a refresh rate that is listed for the current resolution.
  4. Set the game to that same resolution and a refresh rate known to work on the desktop.
  5. On Windows 11, turn off Dynamic Refresh Rate temporarily if the game becomes capped, unstable, or blank after switching modes.

If the screen remains black, use a lower refresh rate first, then a lower resolution. Microsoft lists reducing refresh rate or resolution as an official step when an HDMI HDR path is not stable. Once the game works, raise one setting at a time so you know which combination is reliable.

Could the graphics driver or cable be responsible?

Yes. A driver controls the mode switch, while the cable and ports carry the resulting timing and HDR signal. Microsoft recommends current Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) graphics drivers and identifies DisplayPort as the preferred test path when HDR is supported over DisplayPort.

Update and isolate the software path

  • Install the current graphics driver offered for your GPU and restart Windows.
  • Test the game after the restart before changing several other settings.
  • If the problem began immediately after a driver change, use the driver’s available rollback option or install the previous stable package from the GPU manufacturer.

Check the physical signal path

  • Power off the PC and monitor before reseating the cable.
  • Use a known-good DisplayPort cable when both the graphics output and monitor have compatible DisplayPort ports.
  • If HDMI is required, test a lower refresh rate or resolution and try another HDMI input on the monitor.
  • Disconnect adapters, docks, capture devices, and unnecessary displays while testing.
  • Test another game and the desktop. A fault limited to one title points toward its mode or HDR settings; a fault across games and the desktop points more strongly to the driver, cable, port, GPU, or monitor.

Do not buy a cable solely because a game blinked once. Replace the cable only after confirming that the computer and monitor use compatible ports and that a known-good connection changes the symptom.

What is the fastest troubleshooting order?

Use the following sequence, changing one variable at a time and recording whether the result is a flash, dim image, or no signal.

  1. Note when the failure occurs: game launch, entering FSE, Alt+Tab, changing resolution, or exiting the game.
  2. Switch to Borderless Windowed, apply the setting, and restart the game.
  3. Make Windows HDR and in-game HDR match. For an SDR test, turn both off.
  4. Choose a supported resolution and refresh rate in Advanced display; disable Dynamic Refresh Rate on Windows 11 for the test.
  5. Disable Auto HDR and per-game windowed-game optimizations, then restart.
  6. Install a current graphics driver and reboot.
  7. Test DisplayPort with a known-good cable when the hardware supports it. Otherwise lower HDMI refresh rate or resolution.
  8. Test another game, another display mode, and, if possible, another monitor. On a laptop, repeat the test on AC power and then on battery.

After each change, keep the same game scene and resolution so the comparison is meaningful. If one step restores the picture, re-enable features one at a time until the triggering combination is identified.

Why does the problem happen only on a laptop running on battery?

Windows can change HDR availability and display behavior when an HDR-capable laptop is unplugged. Microsoft specifically advises checking battery behavior when HDR changes coincide with connecting or disconnecting power.

  1. Connect the laptop to AC power and repeat the game test.
  2. Check Settings > System > Display for the HDR control while on AC and while on battery.
  3. If HDR is unavailable or automatically disabled on battery, use SDR on battery or keep the charger connected for HDR gaming.
  4. Test with the laptop’s internal panel and an external monitor separately to determine which signal path changes.

When should I suspect a hardware fault?

Suspect hardware after the same blackout appears in multiple games and display modes, survives a driver restart, and persists with a known-good cable and supported timing. A monitor that loses its on-screen menu, or a GPU that stops driving every connected display, needs hardware service rather than more in-game settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a fullscreen black screen last before I force a restart?

There is no single timeout that applies to every monitor. If the image returns after the mode change, leave it alone; if the monitor stays on no signal and Windows does not recover after waiting briefly, press the game’s normal exit shortcut or use another display connection before holding the PC power button.

Why does pressing Alt+Tab trigger the blackout even when the game launches normally?

Alt+Tab changes which application owns the display surface. In exclusive mode that can force Windows and the game to renegotiate HDR and timing, while Borderless Windowed generally keeps the desktop compositor active. Testing the same shortcut in Borderless Windowed helps separate an ownership transition from a failing cable or monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep Windows HDR off and enable HDR only inside a game?

That combination is a useful diagnostic, but it is not the recommended stable configuration for a game that expects Windows HDR. For consistent output, use HDR in both Windows and the game, or use SDR in both; switch back only after confirming which mode the title supports.

Do I need a new DisplayPort cable to fix this problem?

Not necessarily. A replacement is worthwhile only when both devices have compatible DisplayPort ports and a known-good cable changes the result; otherwise first test supported refresh rates, matching HDR settings, and a current driver. A cable cannot correct an unsupported resolution or an HDR mismatch.
