No. A normal PS5 system-software update should leave installed games, applications, and saved progress on the console. The operation that erases the console is a separate Safe Mode procedure called reinstall system software, which Sony describes as deleting all data and functioning like a factory reset. Game patches are another process again. Before you update, identify whether your content is on console storage, USB extended storage, or an M.2 SSD, and use a backup or cloud synchronization if you want extra protection. If an update fails, retry it or use Sony’s Safe Mode and manual-update instructions; do not select the reinstallation file unless you have accepted a complete data wipe.
Will a routine PS5 system-software update delete games or saves?
A standard update installed through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings updates the console’s operating software. Sony’s ordinary update instructions do not direct you to remove games, applications, or saved data, so those items should remain in place when the installation finishes.

The important exception is not an ordinary update at all: Reinstall System Software in Safe Mode. Sony states, “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” Treat that command as a factory reset and last-resort recovery, not as a stronger version of a routine update.
What is the difference between a system update and a game update?
They are independent update channels. A system-software update changes the PS5 platform itself; a game or application update installs a developer’s patch for one title. Installing one does not automatically mean the other has been installed.

System-software updates
Use the system menu path above to download and install firmware for the PS5. The update process is designed to preserve the console’s existing content. Sony warns not to switch off the console while installation is running because interrupting it can damage the console.
Game and application updates
Game patches are controlled under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. Depending on those settings, a game can update while the console is in Rest Mode or when you launch it. A game may therefore still show a pending patch after the PS5’s system software is current.

Games installed on the PS5’s internal console storage normally stay installed after a routine system update. Their game files are managed separately from saved data, so a firmware update is not a request to rebuild or redownload the titles.
If you previously deleted a game
Deleting a game or application to free space does not remove your purchase entitlement. Sony says you can download a purchased title again from your Game Library. That redownload is separate from the system-update process and may require waiting for the full game install and any patches.

If the game is on USB extended storage
USB extended storage has a playability limitation: PS5 games stored there must be moved back to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before they can be played. The files can remain on the USB drive while you update, but reconnect that drive after any recovery or restore operation and move the title before launching it.
If the game is on an M.2 SSD
PS5 games on a compatible M.2 SSD are usable from that expansion storage. Keep the drive installed during normal updates, and do not erase it as part of troubleshooting unless you have deliberately chosen a procedure that requires wiping storage.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Yes. Saved data should remain after a normal system-software update. This includes the local progress files associated with games on the console; the update is not supposed to reset campaigns, settings, or other ordinary saves.
PS5 save protection has an important limitation: Sony’s transfer guidance says PS5 saved data cannot be copied individually from the console to a USB drive in the same way as PS4 saved data. For PS5 progress, use either a full-console USB backup or PlayStation Plus cloud storage rather than expecting to drag individual save files to a thumb drive.

PS4 games running on a PS5
PS4 saves have a different cloud workflow. Sony says PS4 saved data can be uploaded to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, but it generally must be downloaded manually back to console storage when you need it on a PS5. Do not assume that a PS4 save will appear locally merely because automatic cloud upload was enabled.
Do you need to back up before a normal PS5 update?
No backup is required for the ordinary update path, because installed content and saves should be preserved. A backup is sensible when the console has important progress, when storage hardware is being changed, or when you may need to use Safe Mode to recover from a failed installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFull USB backup
Sony’s full-console backup can include games, applications, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and settings. It is the broadest local protection option, but it is not a harmless snapshot: restoring it erases the data currently on the PS5 before putting the backup back.
- Connect a USB drive with enough free capacity for the console content you intend to protect.
- Open the PS5’s backup function in the system settings and select the categories and content for the full-console backup.
- Allow the backup to finish before disconnecting the drive.
- Keep the backup drive safe and clearly identified; restoration is a deliberate operation that replaces the console’s current data.
Full-console backup archives do not include game files stored on USB extended storage. Retain that external drive separately and reconnect it after a restore workflow. The same distinction matters if your games are on an M.2 SSD: verify that the expansion storage is still installed and recognized after recovery.

PlayStation Plus cloud storage
PlayStation Plus can synchronize PS5 saved data automatically when cloud synchronization is configured. Sony’s current guidance lists up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data. Cloud storage protects saves rather than creating a complete image of games, applications, captures, and settings, so it complements rather than replaces a full USB backup.
What should you check before pressing Update?
A short check prevents most confusion after the restart. Confirm that you are choosing the ordinary system-update command, not a Safe Mode reinstallation; note where your games are stored; and make sure any cloud synchronization or local backup you rely on has completed.
- Check the menu label: Update System Software is the preservation-oriented path; Reinstall System Software is the data-erasing path.
- Identify whether each important game is on internal storage, USB extended storage, or an M.2 SSD.
- If you use PlayStation Plus, verify that automatic save synchronization is configured and that the latest saves have had time to upload.
- If you made a USB backup, do not disconnect the drive until the console reports completion.
- Keep the console powered during installation. Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console.
What if the PS5 system update fails?
Start with the least destructive recovery step and escalate only when necessary. A failed download does not mean your games or saves have already been erased.
- Retry the download. A transient download problem may clear when you start the update again from the system-software settings.
- Use Safe Mode for the update option. Sony provides Safe Mode recovery choices intended to repair or update the console without selecting the wipe-and-reinstall command.
- Use the manual USB update file. Follow Sony’s manual-update instructions exactly, including the required folder and file naming conventions for the update package.
- Do not confuse update and reinstallation files. Sony provides a separate reinstallation file for the procedure that deletes all console data. Selecting it is not a routine troubleshooting step.
- Keep power connected. Do not turn off the PS5 while it is installing. Sony says interrupting installation can cause console damage.
If the console eventually requires reinstallation, assume that local games, saves, captures, and settings will be lost. Recover what you can from a completed full backup or cloud storage, then redownload purchased games from the Game Library and reconnect any external game-storage drive.

Update, backup, restore, and reinstallation: what does each action do?
| Action | Primary purpose | Effect on local games and saves | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Routine system-software update | Install a newer PS5 operating-system version | Should preserve installed games and saved data | Do not interrupt installation |
| Game or application update | Install a patch for a specific title | Updates that title; it is separate from firmware | Automatic updates depend on the settings under Saved Data and Game/App Settings |
| Full USB backup | Create a local copy of games, applications, saves, captures, and settings | Creates protection; it does not itself erase the console | USB extended-storage game files are excluded |
| Backup restoration | Put a previous full-console backup onto the PS5 | Erases the data currently on the console before restoration | Use only when you intend to replace the current console state |
| Safe Mode system reinstallation | Reinstall the PS5 system software as a last resort | Deletes all data on the console | It is effectively a factory reset; recover from backup or cloud afterward |
Which protection method fits your situation?
Choose based on what you need to recover, not simply on whether an update is available.
- Only worried about a normal update: proceed with the standard system-software update and keep the console powered throughout installation.
- Protecting valuable PS5 progress: configure PlayStation Plus cloud synchronization or create a full USB backup before troubleshooting.
- Replacing or resetting the console: use a full backup when you need settings, captures, applications, and other local content, not just saves.
- Games stored on USB extended storage: retain the drive because those game files are outside the full-backup archive; move PS5 titles to console storage or an M.2 SSD before playing.
- Recovering from a failed update: retry first, then use Safe Mode or the manual update package, while avoiding the separate reinstallation file unless a complete wipe is acceptable.
What should you expect after the PS5 restarts?
After a successful routine update, sign in normally and check the game library, installed-storage locations, and saved-data menus. A title may still need its own game patch, and a game on USB extended storage may need to be moved before it can run; neither condition means the firmware update erased your progress. If content is missing after a destructive recovery, restore the full backup, download cloud saves where applicable, reconnect external storage, and redownload purchased games from the library.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cancel a PS5 update without losing my installed games?
If the download has not begun installing, canceling or retrying it does not remove installed content. Once installation is underway, leave the console powered and let it finish; Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console.
Does a full PS5 backup include games on an external USB drive?
No. Sony’s full-console backup excludes game files stored on USB extended storage. Keep that drive and reconnect it after restoring the console so its contents remain available.
Can I copy an individual PS5 save to a USB stick?
Sony’s transfer guidance does not provide the same individual USB-copy workflow for PS5 saves that exists for PS4 saves. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a full-console backup for PS5 save protection.
What happens to PS4 saves when I use PlayStation Plus on a PS5?
PS4 saves can be uploaded to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, but Sony generally requires a manual download back to the PS5’s console storage when you need to use them there. Automatic upload does not by itself guarantee a local copy.
