Sometimes—but the key issue is not simply whether a game contains AI-generated content. It is whether the game takes in, remembers, shares, or reuses information about you. Pre-made AI-assisted dialogue or art does not, by itself, show that your personal data is being collected. A live AI character that accepts your voice or prompts, remembers chats, or sends them to an outside provider raises different privacy and consent questions.
Why AI content does not automatically mean more personal-data collection
A game can use generative AI to help make artwork or dialogue before release without collecting new information from players through that content. Conversely, a feature that looks like an ordinary in-game conversation may process personal information if it accepts player prompts, voice, images, or other inputs.
For any AI feature, look beyond the label and ask what data practice is actually involved: what information is processed, for what purpose, whether it is shared with a third party or used to improve models, and how long it is kept. Also check whether the game remembers your interactions across sessions. These are separate questions from whether content was generated by AI.
What to check when a game lets you interact with AI
- Inputs: Does the feature accept text, voice, images, gameplay activity, or player-created content?
- Memory: Does it retain prompts or conversation history, or restore context the next time you play?
- Purpose: Is the information used only to provide the feature, or also for model training or improvement?
- Sharing: Is information sent to an outside AI provider or otherwise disclosed to another party?
- Controls: Can you turn off data sharing, delete saved information, or opt out of a secondary use? Are those controls available for a child’s account?
Check the game’s privacy notice and the platform’s settings rather than assuming an in-game AI toggle controls every use of data. Training preferences, voice or chat controls, and deletion options may be handled separately.

Roblox’s rules show how interactive AI can affect platform disclosures
Roblox’s Creator Hub says a game must disclose AI interaction in its Content Maturity questionnaire when a player can interact with a generative AI model and trigger a response. Its examples include text, voice, images, 3D generation, and avatar movement. Roblox also says that having an AI component alone does not change a game’s maturity rating. These are Roblox platform rules, not rules that automatically apply to other games.
Roblox describes “extended AI interaction” to include continuous chatbot-like interaction when it is the game’s main purpose, or cross-session memory that restores prior conversation context. Under Roblox’s guidance, a game meeting its criteria must answer “Yes” to the Extended AI question and receive a Restricted content maturity label, which makes it unavailable to users under 18. The platform also says notices should be visible when AI interaction begins and throughout the session. Its example notice is: “This is an AI-powered conversation, not human. It may make mistakes.”

Roblox data-sharing settings and model training
Roblox says it uses data to train generative AI models and provides creators with data-sharing preferences. The defaults differ by content type—games, avatar items, and paid assets—and by whether the content was published before or on or after July 10, 2024. Roblox says creators can change the defaults and override them during publication. Players should not assume a creator’s settings or a visible in-game privacy control cover every form of data use; consult the platform’s current documentation and settings.
For data that has been opted out, Roblox says it is removed from the training dataset within 30 days, and models trained on that data are updated within 365 days. Those are Roblox’s stated operational periods for its own systems, not a general timeline for other games or AI services.

Children’s voice and AI interactions in the United States
In the United States, COPPA applies to operators of services directed to children under 13 and to other operators with actual knowledge that they collect personal information online from a child under 13. The FTC identifies a child’s voice in an audio file as personal information. For a service covered by COPPA, operators generally must give parents notice and obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting, using, or disclosing a child’s personal information, subject to exceptions.
The FTC describes a narrow situation involving voice audio used only to carry out a spoken request and kept only briefly. That should not be treated as a blanket exemption for voice-enabled games. Nor does every AI conversation automatically require a new or separate parental consent: the legal question depends on whether the service is covered and what personal information it collects, uses, or discloses.

In September 2025, the FTC announced an inquiry into AI companion firms, including questions about inputs, data sharing, disclosures, and monitoring for harms. It is an inquiry, not a new general privacy rule for games.

Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner recommends that organizations explain what personal information they collect, how and when it is used or disclosed, and why, throughout the generative-AI lifecycle. It specifically recommends explaining secondary purposes such as training, and telling people who interact with public-facing AI about privacy risks and possible mitigations—for example, avoiding unnecessary personal information in prompts. This is regulator guidance, not a universal game-specific legal mandate.

For players, a useful disclosure should make the data practice understandable: what the feature receives, what happens to that information, whether it is shared or used for training, and what choices are available. If those details are unclear, avoid entering sensitive personal information into a prompt or voice interaction.
How to assess an AI feature before using it
- Identify the interaction. Is the AI content pre-made, or can you send it text, voice, images, or other information and receive a live response?
- Read the privacy notice. Look for the types of input collected, the purpose of processing, retention, third-party sharing, and any model-training use.
- Check memory and age controls. Find out whether conversations persist across sessions and what settings or restrictions apply to minors.
- Find the available choices. Look for controls to disable the feature, opt out of training or sharing, access or delete information, and adjust voice or chat permissions.
- Decide what to share. If the game does not clearly explain how prompts or recordings are handled, do not provide personal or sensitive details.
What is not established across the games industry
There is no established industry-wide figure here for how many games use generative AI or how often player data is used to train models. The platform examples and regulator guidance show why the details matter, but they do not establish that every game collects prompts, stores voice, trains on player creations, or offers the same controls. Policies can change, so check the current terms and settings for the particular game and platform you use.
