Epic Games Store has given away Grand Theft Auto V once, for one week in May 2020. No official Epic announcement of a repeat GTA V giveaway appears in the sources behind this article, and Epic’s weekly free-game program does not promise that GTA V will return. Treat a repeat as unconfirmed until Epic publishes it.
What Epic actually gave away in 2020
Epic announced the offer on May 15, 2020, as part of its Mega Sale. The announcement said:

“The event crashes out of the gate with an incredible free game offer: for the next week (through May 21 at 11AM Eastern), Rockstar’s best-selling, award-winning Grand Theft Auto V can be claimed for free… yours to keep.”
Two points in that wording matter. First, the window was a claim period: players had until May 21, 2020 at 11 AM Eastern to add the game to their accounts. Second, the phrase “yours to keep” applied to copies claimed during that window. It did not make GTA V a permanently free game for every Epic user afterward. Anyone who missed the claim window had no further route to the free copy under that announcement.

Why Epic’s weekly free games don’t settle the question
Epic’s Free Games page describes a new free PC game every week, with new offers posted on Thursdays. That schedule is real, but it answers a different question from the one most readers are asking. It establishes the program, not any particular title. In the pages reviewed for this article, GTA V does not appear as a current free offer, and no page links the weekly program to a return date for the game.
- What the schedule shows: Epic regularly rotates free PC games, and the lineup changes.
- What it does not show: that any specific title, including GTA V, is scheduled to return.
- What would confirm a repeat: an offer that names GTA V on Epic’s own store pages or in an official Epic announcement.
How to check for a new GTA V offer
- Open Epic’s Free Games page on the Epic Games Store website and review the current lineup, noting the date of each listing.
- If GTA V is not listed, open the Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced product page on the store to see whether it is currently offered as a free claim, a discount, or a regular purchase.
- Check the store’s pages again on the day you plan to act. Store pages change without notice, and a listing that looked free or discounted earlier may have changed.
The 2020 announcement is the only official record of a GTA V giveaway in the sources behind this article. Store pages may have changed since those sources were checked, so confirm the current state on Epic’s site before relying on any offer.

Owning GTA V on Epic: Enhanced and Legacy
Epic’s current product listing presents Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced as a PC product that also includes GTA V Legacy. Two ownership rules are worth knowing:
- Existing owners: Epic Games Player Support states that players who own GTA V receive the Enhanced edition automatically, at no cost.
- New buyers: purchasing Enhanced also includes Legacy.
- Not a giveaway: receiving Enhanced as an existing owner is an edition update, not a new free offer, and it does not indicate that Epic will run another claim.
Prices for the Enhanced listing are not quoted here. Listing prices change, and any figure shown in an older page or cached copy may be out of date.

If you missed the 2020 claim
The free claim ended in May 2020. There is no official route in the sources reviewed to claim the game free under that offer now. The practical options are to check Epic’s Free Games page for future offers, or to review the current GTA V Enhanced listing if you want to buy the game.
