Maybe—but it depends on your device and what you mean by “delete.” Uninstalling Minecraft, deleting a world inside the game, and removing Minecraft’s saved data are different actions. Before removing anything, make a platform-appropriate backup and confirm it is stored somewhere the deletion will not affect.
What happens to your worlds when you delete Minecraft?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer for every edition and device. Minecraft’s guidance differs by platform, and an app uninstall is not necessarily the same as deleting the files that hold your worlds. The safest assumption is that a world could be lost unless you have verified a separate backup or a supported cloud save.

Minecraft Bedrock is available on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS, while Java Edition has its own file locations and uninstall guidance. Minecraft’s edition overview can help identify which edition you use. Its Backup & Restore section lists separate guidance for Bedrock world backups on Windows and Android and cloud saves on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. Follow the instructions for your specific device rather than assuming one platform’s behavior applies to another.
How Java Edition uninstalling differs from deleting its data
Minecraft Help recommends saving the worlds and other game data you want to keep before uninstalling Java Edition. Its manual uninstall instructions distinguish removing the game from manually deleting its data folder. On Windows, macOS, and Linux, those folders contain saved worlds and other files; the article describes manual folder removal as the way to delete that data. These instructions do not establish what every launcher or operating system does during an ordinary app uninstall.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Minecraft’s warning that support cannot recover deleted files appears in the context of this Java Edition manual cleanup. Treat it as a warning about that deletion process, not as a universal statement about every platform’s backups or recovery options.
Xbox cloud saves: check that the latest world is synced
Minecraft’s Xbox cloud-save guidance says the most recent Minecraft worlds are automatically saved to the cloud and explains how to sync and download the latest save. Before uninstalling or removing a save, make sure the cloud copy has synced. The Xbox page also describes a “Delete from console” option for saved data; that is not the same as deleting the cloud copy.

Back up a world before uninstalling or clearing data
- Save and quit the world. Make sure the game has finished saving before you begin.
- Open the backup instructions for your edition and device. Use Minecraft’s Backup & Restore section or the platform-specific guidance above.
- Create an export or backup if your platform supports it. A Bedrock world-export manual describes saving a
.mcworldfile to a chosen location, including a USB or network drive. See the world-export instructions; availability of that workflow depends on your platform. - Verify the backup is outside the data you plan to remove. Confirm that you can locate the exported file or backup before deleting or uninstalling anything.
- Only then remove the app or its data. Read the platform’s confirmation carefully, especially if it refers to saved data, local files, or cloud saves.
Signing in to a Microsoft account should not be treated as proof that every local world will automatically return on every device. The available platform guidance does not establish that.

If a world is already missing
Check the backup locations supported by your device, including any platform cloud save or local export you previously made. On Xbox, use the official sync and download steps for the latest cloud save. Recovery is not guaranteed: Minecraft explicitly says it cannot recover files deleted through the manual Java cleanup described in its uninstall guidance, and that does not establish the outcome for other devices or deletion types.
