Generally, yes: Japanese Nintendo Switch game cards work on a US console. Nintendo’s exception is consoles and game cards distributed in the Chinese region. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every title, however, and game cards, DLC, eShop purchases, and language options have different rules.
Do Japanese Switch game cards work on a US console?
Nintendo says that, with the exception of consoles and game cards distributed in the Chinese region, Nintendo Switch game cards are not region-locked. That means a Japanese physical game card will generally play on a US Switch. Nintendo also cautions that it has not tested every overseas game with consoles from every region, so it cannot guarantee full service and support for every combination. How to check a specific game’s supported regions
Before buying an import, check the title’s packaging or its Support Information on the console. Nintendo gives this menu path:

- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game icon.
- Press the + or − button.
- Select Software Information, then Support Information.
- Review the supported regions shown for the software.
This check is useful for a particular title, but Nintendo’s general compatibility guidance still does not amount to a guarantee of full support for every overseas release. Nintendo’s FAQ identifies the packaging and this menu as places to find supported-region information.

Physical games, DLC, and eShop cards have different region rules

Nintendo Japan likewise says overseas physical Switch software can operate on Japanese consoles, while noting that overseas software may not work with add-on content sold through the Japanese eShop. This reinforces why a region-free physical card does not mean related digital content is interchangeable. Will a Japanese game include English?
Console compatibility does not establish which languages a particular Japanese edition supports. Language options vary by title and edition; check the game’s packaging or the publisher’s official product information. Do not assume that an import includes English just because its card works on a US Switch.

What to compare before choosing an imported edition
When comparing a Japanese physical edition with a US one, verify the supported regions, whether any DLC matches that edition, the listed languages, and any title-specific features or support details the publisher identifies. Nintendo’s regional guidance establishes the general game-card and DLC rules, but it does not settle language or feature differences for an unspecified game.
