It depends on your Minecraft edition. In Java Edition, mobs riding in boats do not naturally despawn, according to the Minecraft Wiki. In Bedrock Edition, the documented persistence rules do not list boat occupancy as a guarantee, so use a name tag or another known persistence trigger if you need a naturally spawning mob to stay.
Do mobs despawn if they are in a boat?
Java Edition: The Minecraft Wiki reports that mobs riding in boats do not despawn naturally, a rule it associates with snapshot 20w18a. This is a secondary-source claim.

Bedrock Edition: Mojang’s Bedrock persistence guidance lists tempted, name-tagged, tamed, and bred mobs as examples of mobs set to persist, but does not list riding in a boat. The practical conclusion is that a boat alone should not be treated as a guarantee in Bedrock; this is an inference from the documented rules, not an explicit boat-specific statement.

Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16 release notes, published in 2020, describe despawning by distance from the nearest player and simulation distance. The figures below are specific to those release notes; they should not be assumed to cover every later version or mob-specific exception.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Simulation distance 4: Almost all naturally spawning mobs automatically despawn at 44 blocks or farther from the nearest player.
- Higher simulation distances: The notes describe despawning at the edge of simulation distance, up to 128 blocks from the nearest player.
- Fish: The notes give a 40-block threshold across simulation distances.
- Between 32 and 44 blocks at simulation distance 4: A mob must have taken no damage for 30 seconds, then pass a 1-in-800 chance of despawning.
Mojang’s current Bedrock entity reference documents standard despawn component defaults of a 32-block minimum range, a 128-block maximum distance, a 30-second inactivity timer, and a 1-in-800 chance. These are component defaults, not a guarantee that every mob uses the same settings or lacks an exception.
How to keep a Bedrock mob from despawning
If the mob matters, use a documented persistence trigger rather than relying on the boat. Mojang states in its Bedrock 1.16 release notes that mobs set to persist—such as tempted, name-tagged, tamed, or bred mobs—will never naturally despawn.

The notes do not establish that every trigger applies to every mob type. If one method is unavailable for the mob you have, consult the rules for that mob and use a persistence option it supports.
