Usually, a PS2 audio/video cable can work with a PS3 if it is a compatible AV cable and your TV has the matching input. Sony lists several PS2 AV cable models as compatible with the PS3 systems covered by its accessory tables. Power cords are different: do not assume a PS2 power cord is safe or compatible with a PS3.
Which PS2 cables work with a PS3?
Sony’s Japan-region compatibility tables list overlapping PS2 and PS3 AV cable models, including composite and component cables. Sony also lists compatible S-Video, D-terminal, RFU and RGB entries across the console series shown. This supports using the listed Sony cables with the documented consoles; it does not establish that every third-party cable or every regional model will work.

The PS2 table covers SCPH-90000, 70000, 50000, 30000 and 10000 series. The PS3 table covers CECH-4000, CECH-3000, CECH-2000 and the listed CECHA00/CECHB00/CECHH00/CECHL00 models. Check your console’s model label and the exact cable before relying on compatibility.

- Check that the cable’s console-side plug is the PlayStation AV Multi Out type and that its model is listed for your console, if known.
- Connect the cable to the PS3’s AV MULTI OUT connector. Sony’s PS3 quick-start guide says: “Connect cables other than the HDMI cable to the AV MULTI OUT connector on the system.”
- Connect the other end to the matching TV inputs. For composite, that is typically the yellow video input plus the red and white left/right audio inputs; component, S-Video and other cable types require their corresponding TV inputs.
- Select the matching input on the television. If the TV lacks the connector used by the cable, the cable alone will not make the connection work.
What picture quality and formats should you expect?
Reusing an analog cable does not give you an HDMI connection or guarantee the same formats. Sony Japan’s guidance lists composite AV and S-Video at 480i; component AV at 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i; and HDMI at 1080p, 1080i, 720p and 480p. Those are Sony’s published formats, not a promise that every TV, cable implementation or regional console supports every listed mode.

Sony also says HDMI is required for HD viewing of Blu-ray Disc video and Blu-ray content with copy protection on CECH-3000 and later models. HDMI uses a separate connector and cable; a PS2 AV cable cannot be plugged into the PS3’s HDMI port.

Do not infer power-cord compatibility from AV-cable compatibility. Sony’s tables list power cords separately by console series, and the PS2 table also distinguishes an AC adapter for certain PS2 series. Sony’s PS3 manual instructs owners to use the supplied power cord rather than another cord. Check the PS3 model label and use the correct supplied or specified replacement; do not assume a PS2 cord is suitable for every PS3.

What to check before reusing a cable
- Identify the cable: AV cables connect video/audio; the AC power cord supplies power. These are not interchangeable categories.
- Match the TV input: Confirm the television has the input type at the cable’s TV end.
- Verify the model: Sony’s compatibility evidence applies to its listed cable numbers and console series, not every unbranded cable or local variant.
- Choose for the content: For supported HD output, use a connection and display path that support the format you need; protected Blu-ray video on CECH-3000 and later requires HDMI according to Sony.
