A patent can describe a technical idea without confirming that it will become a feature in a product.
Can PS5 play PS3 games or discs?
Sony’s PlayStation Support page states: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” That is the clearest official answer for anyone hoping to insert a PS3 disc and play it on PS5. The page describes PS4 compatibility separately: the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, though some may have limitations or behave unexpectedly. Sony’s March 2020 PS5 hardware update likewise discussed testing backward compatibility for PS4 titles, not native PS3 support. It said Sony was evaluating more than 4,000 PS4 games and expected compatible titles could benefit from boosted frequency, potentially improving frame rates or resolution. A 2025 Notebookcheck report describes a February 2024 patent filing credited to Mark Cerny as addressing timing mismatches in older software. The report says Sony’s plans remain unclear. It does not establish that the technique is intended for PS3 games, that it has been implemented in PS5 hardware or software, or that Sony plans to release native PS3 support. A patent is a record of a described invention or technical approach, not a product announcement or shipping-feature guarantee. The patent record and its exact claims are not verified here, so the report should be treated as a lead, not proof that PS5 will run PS3 games natively. Sony’s published support guidance remains explicit about PS3 discs.

How to check whether a specific game is available
- Identify the exact game and format. A PS3 disc, a digital PS3 purchase, and a PS5 remaster or remake are different ways of accessing a title.
- Check your country’s PlayStation Plus catalog. Search for the title in the current local catalog and confirm that it is listed for streaming. Catalog availability can vary by title and country.
- Check the access conditions. If it is offered through streaming, confirm the relevant PlayStation Plus membership requirement. A streamed game runs remotely; it is not native PS3 execution on your PS5.
- Look for a PS5 release or use a PS3 console. If the game is not in your local streaming catalog and has no suitable PS5 version, a working PS3 may be needed to play the PS3 edition.
