No official confirmation exists that a future PlayStation 6 will play PS5 games. Sony’s published compatibility information covers the current PS5, which runs PS5 and the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. Sony’s reviewed 2025 corporate materials and press-release index do not specify a PS6 launch date, hardware design, disc-drive plan, supported generations, or digital-license policy. Until Sony publishes those details or a supported-games list, PS5 compatibility on PS6 is a reasonable possibility—not a guaranteed feature.
That distinction matters if you are deciding whether to buy current PS5 hardware, keep physical games, or purchase digital titles. A successor could preserve compatibility through software and hardware similarities, but nothing publicly establishes that every PS5 disc, download, save, accessory, or license will transfer.

At present, Sony has not announced PS6 backward compatibility with PS5. There is no official PS6 specification, supported-games list, or licensing policy confirming that PS5 games will run on the next console.
Online statements that compatibility is “confirmed” should therefore be treated as rumors or leaks unless Sony publishes primary documentation. The most that can be said responsibly is that PS5 support is plausible because Sony has maintained broad compatibility within the current generation. Plausibility is not an entitlement: a successor might support all PS5 software, most of it, or only a tested selection.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The eventual answer will have several separate parts. “Backward compatible” could mean that a digital purchase launches from your account, that a physical disc acts as an ownership check, that a game receives a free patch, or merely that selected titles are re-released. Those are different policies, and Sony has not chosen among them publicly for PS6.
What does Sony officially support on PS5 today?
Sony’s current documentation gives buyers a clear, but limited, baseline: PS5 plays PS5 games and PS4 games in disc and digital formats, subject to the console’s hardware configuration and individual-game exceptions.

|---|---|---|
| PS4 library | More than 4,000 PS4 games are ready to play on PS4 and PS5; some receive next-generation enhancements. | It does not promise that this library, or the PS5 library, will run on a successor. |
| General PS4 support | PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. | “Overwhelming majority” is not the same as every title, and it says nothing about PS5 games on PS6. |
| Game formats | PS5 supports PS4 and PS5 games in disc and digital formats when the console has the required hardware. | PS6’s disc-drive configuration and digital-license rules have not been announced. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | PS4 discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition because it has no disc drive. | A future digital-only model could impose a similar limitation, but that is speculation. |
| PS5 Pro enhancements | Sony’s 2024 PS5 Pro announcement says Game Boost applies to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. | This demonstrates a current-generation enhancement feature, not a PS6 compatibility commitment. |
The numbers describe Sony’s published figures and categories, not a guarantee that every game receives identical performance or visual treatment. A title may remain playable while lacking a next-generation patch, higher resolution, improved frame rate, or other enhancement.
What is actually known about PS6?
Very little has been specified by Sony. The company’s reviewed 2025 corporate strategy materials discuss PlayStation investment and PS5 performance, but they do not provide the information needed to answer a compatibility question.
- No official PS6 launch date has been supplied.
- No price or regional availability has been announced.
- Sony has not described the hardware architecture or how closely it will resemble PS5.
- There is no confirmed list of supported generations or games.
- Sony has not said whether every model will include a disc drive, offer an optional drive, or be digital-only.
- The company has not explained whether existing digital purchases transfer automatically, require an upgrade, or need to be bought again.
Without those facts, a precise claim such as “all PS5 games will work on PS6” goes beyond the evidence. Even a future announcement of the console would not answer every practical question until Sony publishes game coverage, formats, saves, accessories, and licensing terms.
Why does PS5 support make PS6 compatibility seem plausible?
Sony has already carried a large PS4 catalogue onto PS5 and added Game Boost treatment for thousands of backward-compatible PS4 games on PS5 Pro. A successor could use a similar software compatibility layer, hardware virtualization, or a related processor architecture to run PS5 code.

That is an inference from Sony’s approach, not a statement of PS6 policy. Technical similarity can reduce engineering work, but it does not guarantee that every game behaves correctly. Games can depend on timing, storage behavior, operating-system features, licensed middleware, network services, or peripherals that change between generations.
Compatibility also has a business dimension. Sony may decide that some games should be sold as enhanced editions, placed in a curated catalogue, or excluded because testing and licensing costs are too high. The current PS4-to-PS5 experience shows that broad coverage is possible; it does not reveal the commercial terms Sony would set for PS6.
Which details will determine whether PS5 games work on PS6?
When Sony eventually makes an announcement, evaluate five separate compatibility axes rather than treating a single “backward compatible” label as a complete answer.
Game coverage
Ask whether Sony means every PS5 title, most titles, or a curated list. A launch statement may cover first-party games while leaving third-party titles to individual publishers. Check for an exclusion list and for the date on which the list was last updated.
Physical format
Disc support depends first on whether the PS6 model has a drive. If it does, Sony still needs to state whether a PS5 disc installs and runs directly, acts only as a license check, or requires a download. A digital-only model cannot read a PS5 disc, just as PS4 discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition.
Digital licensing
A digital purchase is tied to account and platform rules, not just to the game’s files. Sony must explain whether your existing purchase launches on PS6, whether an upgrade fee applies, and whether regional or publisher restrictions remain. Do not infer a free transfer from the fact that the same title appears in both console stores.
Performance and enhancements
Compatibility can range from an unchanged PS5 version to a patch with higher resolution, steadier frame rates, HDR improvements, faster loading, or a Game Boost-style mode. Look for game-by-game notes; a console-wide feature does not guarantee the same result in every title.
Saves and accessories
Check how saved progress migrates and whether the PS6 can read existing save data. The same question applies to headsets, cameras, steering wheels, fight sticks, virtual-reality hardware, and other accessories. A game may run while a required peripheral does not.
Can I play my PS5 discs on PS6?
There is no confirmed answer. Physical PS5 compatibility would require a PS6 model with a compatible disc drive and an operating system that recognizes the disc’s license and game data. Sony could support discs broadly, support only selected games, or omit disc playback on a digital-only model.
Do not discard PS5 discs or assume that owning the disc guarantees a digital entitlement. Keep the disc, its case, and access to the account used for any associated download until Sony publishes the PS6 policy. If you plan to buy a current physical game, regard future PS6 use as an unconfirmed benefit rather than part of its value.
Will my digital PS5 games transfer to PS6?
Sony has not stated that PS5 digital purchases will transfer to PS6. Possible models include automatic account-based access, a free upgrade for selected games, a paid upgrade, or no transfer for particular publishers or regions.
The safest assumption for a purchase decision is that the PS5 entitlement is guaranteed on PS5 only. Keep your account credentials secure and retain purchase records, but do not buy a digital game solely because you expect a future PS6 license. A later announcement may be generous, but it cannot be relied on before Sony defines the terms.
Will PS6 play every PS5 game or only some of them?
Every outcome remains open. Sony could target the complete PS5 catalogue, certify most games over time, or publish a smaller tested list. “Backward compatible” in a headline would not by itself reveal whether unsupported games fail to boot, run with problems, or simply lack enhancements.
Look for three kinds of evidence in a formal announcement: a searchable compatibility database, an explanation of how delisted or online-only games are treated, and a process for reporting technical problems. Also check whether the list applies to both disc and digital editions. Coverage can differ by format even when the game title is the same.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I buy a PS5 now or wait for PS6?
Buy current PS5 hardware if you want its confirmed library and features now. Wait if you are comfortable delaying your games and your decision depends mainly on PS6 specifications that Sony has not disclosed.
| Your situation | Practical choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want to play PS5 releases now | Buy a PS5 based on its current capabilities. | Those games and the documented PS4 catalogue are available without relying on a future promise. |
| You already own many PS5 games | Keep using PS5 and wait for official PS6 details before selling it. | Resale or upgrade value depends on disc, save, accessory, and license rules that are unknown. |
| You can wait and mainly want the next generation | Wait for a Sony announcement and supported-games list. | You will be able to compare confirmed coverage, price, model options, and transfer terms. |
| You are choosing between disc and digital purchases | Choose the format that works for your PS5 needs today. | PS6’s drive and entitlement policy are not established, so future-proofing cannot be calculated reliably. |
Do not buy a PS5 on the assumption that Sony will provide a guaranteed PS6 upgrade, trade-in, or compatibility entitlement. If PS6 is announced, compare its official policy with the value of keeping your existing console rather than making a decision from rumor headlines.

How can you prepare for a future PS6 announcement?
- Track primary information. Use Sony’s PlayStation product pages, support documentation, and official announcements for model, game, and licensing details. Treat unsourced screenshots and anonymous claims as unverified.
- Inventory your library. Separate disc games, digital purchases, subscriptions, and titles that depend on online services. This makes a future compatibility list easier to check.
- Protect account access. Keep the account that owns digital games accessible and maintain current recovery information. A hardware transfer cannot help if you cannot sign in to the purchasing account.
- Preserve save data. Follow Sony’s eventual migration instructions and keep any existing save backups until your progress has been verified on the new console.
- List essential accessories. Note which games require a camera, VR equipment, specialty controller, or licensed device. Confirm each item separately instead of assuming that a working game implies working hardware.
- Delay irreversible sales. Keep the PS5 and physical media until the PS6 coverage and resale implications are clear.
What should Sony’s eventual compatibility announcement include?
A useful announcement should identify the exact PS6 models covered, whether a disc drive is built in or optional, and whether a disc is required after installation. It should publish a title-by-title list, explain digital purchase transfer and upgrade fees, and state how regional editions are handled.
It should also document save migration, supported accessories, online-service dependencies, performance modes, and known exclusions. Those details are what turn a general promise into information a PS5 owner can use to decide whether to keep, sell, or upgrade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a PS6 announcement automatically make my PS5 obsolete?
No. A new console can launch while the PS5 remains the only guaranteed way to access your existing PS5 library. Keep the current console until the successor’s game coverage, account rules, and accessory support meet your needs.
How can I tell whether a PS6 compatibility claim is official?
Look for a statement on Sony’s PlayStation sites, a dated support article, or a formal product announcement that names supported games or generations. A retailer listing, forum post, or social-media screenshot is not equivalent to Sony’s documentation.
Could PS6 support digital PS5 games but not physical copies?
Yes, that configuration is technically and commercially possible if Sony offers a digital-only model or sets different rules for discs. The opposite arrangement is also possible, so format-specific terms must come from Sony rather than assumptions about ownership.
Will PS5 save files definitely work on PS6?
No. Save compatibility is a separate technical and licensing question from whether the game executable runs. Sony would need to describe the migration method and any title-specific limits before your progress can be considered protected.
