Qiddiya’s gaming and esports district could pay off over time by drawing visitors and helping build Saudi Arabia’s games industry. But the public figures available so far show ambitions, projections and event reach—not a demonstrated financial return. The answer depends on whether the district opens and operates at scale, attracts repeat paid demand, and helps create lasting local businesses and jobs.
What is Qiddiya’s gaming and esports district?
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) describes the district as a hub for competitive esports, casual gaming and digital entertainment. Its project page lists four arenas, 183,100 square metres of gaming and interactive entertainment space, and more than 30 global gaming brands expected to establish regional headquarters in Qiddiya City. These are project descriptions and plans, not independent confirmation that the facilities are complete or operating: PIF’s Gaming and Esports District page.

At the district’s December 2023 launch, Qiddiya described four planned venues with more than 73,000 seats combined, including one arena planned to seat 5,300. Those figures describe the announced buildout, not verified capacity in operation: Qiddiya’s launch announcement.

What is Saudi Arabia trying to achieve?
The district is part of a much wider national strategy. Saudi Arabia’s National Gaming and Esports Strategy set 2030 targets of about SAR 50 billion in direct and indirect GDP contribution, 39,000 jobs, more than 30 globally competitive games produced by domestic studios, and a top-three global ranking for professional esports players. These targets concern the national games and esports ecosystem; they are not forecasts of Qiddiya’s own contribution: National Gaming and Esports Strategy.

PIF separately says Qiddiya’s district aims to attract 10 million annual visits to its venues by 2030 and incubate 30 leading game-development companies. PIF also restates national strategy ambitions of 250 companies, 39,000 jobs and $13.3 billion in GDP contribution. The 10-million figure is a district visitor ambition; the economic targets refer to the broader national strategy: PIF’s 2025 announcement.
What evidence points to demand?
A substantial gaming audience
PwC reported an estimate of 23.5 million gaming enthusiasts in Saudi Arabia—67% of the population—for 2023. That suggests a large potential audience for gaming, but it is a dated estimate of enthusiasts, not a current count of likely district visitors or paying customers: PwC’s 2024 Middle East entertainment and media outlook.

Event attendance at Qiddiya-linked activations
In a July 2026 announcement about expanded collaboration at EWC 2026, the Esports Foundation and Qiddiya reported that Qiddiya Arena welcomed more than 42,000 visitors at EWC 2025, while a separate PlayLife activation drew 216,000. These event-specific counts indicate reach, but the announcement does not establish how many attendees were unique, paying, repeat visitors or likely to return to a permanent district. The two figures should not be added as if they represented distinct people: Esports Foundation and Qiddiya’s 2026 announcement.

Forecasts for the whole city
A 2023 Vision 2030 report projected that Qiddiya City as a whole could attract 48 million annual visitors, create more than 300,000 jobs and contribute $36 billion per year to the Saudi economy by 2030. What would show that the investment is paying off?
Attendance at a major event or an announced headquarters is not enough on its own. A sound assessment needs evidence across four areas:
- Delivery: whether the announced arenas and interactive spaces open, when they open, and whether they operate at the announced scale.
- Demand quality: recurring annual paid visits, event frequency, repeat attendance, visitor spending and the share of visitors coming from outside the local market.
- Industry impact: whether game companies maintain durable regional operations, employ and train local talent, and produce or publish commercially successful games in Saudi Arabia.
- Public value and cost: project-level capital and operating costs weighed against recurring private revenue, local jobs and independently measured economic spillovers.
The public sources cited here do not provide a district-level capital budget, operating costs, revenue model, completed construction schedule, audited attendance series or realized economic return. They also do not establish whether the headquarters and incubation ambitions have led to sustained local production, exports or employment. Without those measures, it is not possible to calculate whether the district’s returns justify its costs.

Will Qiddiya pay off?
It could, if the announced venues turn into a consistently used destination and the district builds durable local game businesses alongside tourism demand. The current evidence supports the existence of a strategic plan, a large proposed buildout and early event reach; it does not establish recurring demand or a return on investment. Qiddiya is therefore a plausible long-term bet, but whether it pays off remains unproven.
