Will Wright Net Worth: What the $40 Million Estimate Really Means

Celebrity Net Worth lists a $40 million estimate for Will Wright, but historical Maxis stock reports and EA’s Sims revenue are different measures—not proof of his current wealth.

Celebrity Net Worth estimates Will Wright’s net worth at $40 million, on a page last updated March 25, 2026. That is a third-party estimate—not a figure Wright has publicly disclosed or an audited calculation of his assets and debts.

What is Will Wright’s estimated net worth?

The most direct current figure located is Celebrity Net Worth’s $40 million estimate. The site says its figures draw on public sources and, in some cases, private tips, and are estimates unless otherwise indicated. The sources available do not independently verify Wright’s current net worth.

Wright is a video-game designer and Maxis co-founder. His career includes SimCity and The Sims, but a successful career or a game franchise’s sales do not, by themselves, establish an individual’s present wealth.

What do the historical Maxis deal figures show?

Press accounts reported different figures for Wright’s personal stock proceeds from Electronic Arts’ acquisition of Maxis. They should be read as attributed historical estimates, not combined into multiple payouts.

#1 Best Overall
Figure What it refers to Source and qualification
$125 million Reported value of EA’s acquisition of Maxis The Guardian, 2004; a reported transaction value.
$15 million Estimated value of the EA stock Wright personally received The Guardian, 2004; the paper’s estimate at the time.
$17 million Reported value of Wright’s EA stock from the Maxis deal The Guardian, 2008; a later report that differs from the earlier figure.

The $15 million and $17 million figures are two reports about stock proceeds from the same deal, not amounts to add together. Neither establishes the value of Wright’s assets or liabilities today.

Why The Sims’ revenue is not Wright’s net worth

The Guardian reported in 2008 that The Sims and its spin-offs had earned EA about $4 billion by that time. That was franchise revenue for EA, not Wright’s personal income or wealth. Revenue does not show how proceeds were divided, what costs or other obligations applied, or what an individual retained and later accumulated.

How Maxis fits into Wright’s career

EA’s official Maxis history says Wright and Jeff Braun founded the studio in 1987, and that Maxis became part of EA in 1997. The studio’s history includes SimCity, The Sims, SimCity 4, and Spore. This context helps explain why Wright is associated with major game franchises, but it does not provide a current personal financial statement.

In a 2026 GamesRadar+ article, Wright was reported to be continuing work on Proxi through Gallium Studios. The article also described funding problems and team layoffs in 2024. Those career updates do not supply evidence for changing or recalculating a net-worth estimate.

What can—and cannot—be concluded from the figures

  • Current estimate: Celebrity Net Worth lists $40 million, but does not establish an audited or independently verified total.
  • Historical proceeds: The Guardian published $15 million and $17 million figures in separate reports about Wright’s stock from the Maxis deal; they are not additive.
  • Franchise earnings: The roughly $4 billion figure concerns EA’s reported Sims franchise earnings by 2008, not Wright’s personal fortune.
  • Missing information: These sources do not establish the current value of Wright’s investments, royalties, property, debts, or other assets.

Wright told The Guardian in 2004: “SimCity made me as rich as I need to be and this is definitely a labour of love.” It is a statement about his perspective at that time, not a disclosure of a net-worth figure.
