The language has continued to evolve through regular numbered releases and opt-in editions, most recently Rust 2024, which became stable with Rust 1.85.0 on February 20, 2025. That system gives Rust ways to introduce some compatibility-sensitive changes without requiring a new major version; it does not settle what the project might decide in the future.
Does Rust 2 exist or have a release date?
No Rust 2 announcement, release date, or stated plan appears in the official Rust sources cited here. That means there is no confirmed Rust 2 to plan around. It does not prove that a major version change is impossible or will never happen: future project decisions cannot be inferred from the absence of an announcement.

The Rust Lang Team’s 2022 roadmap discussed language-evolution priorities and work around Rust 2024, but it is a dated roadmap rather than a current commitment about Rust 2. Read the Rust Lang Team’s 2022 roadmap.
Why can Rust keep changing without Rust 2?
Rust has two related but different kinds of versioning. Numbered releases deliver compiler and library changes. Editions give the project a way to introduce selected changes that could otherwise break existing code, while letting each crate opt into the new rules on its own schedule.

The Edition 2024 Project Group described an edition as “Rust’s mechanism for introducing backwards-incompatible changes in a backwards-compatible way.” Its safeguards are that editions are opt-in, older-edition crates are not left behind, and crates using different editions can interoperate. This model helps explain why Rust can evolve without bundling every substantial change into a single breaking Rust 2 transition. It is a reason a major version change may not be needed for many kinds of evolution—not a guarantee that one will never be needed.

What is the latest Rust edition?
The editions documented in the official sources are 2015, 2018, 2021, and 2024. The Rust project has described editions as arriving once every three years. Rust 2024 became stable with Rust 1.85.0 on February 20, 2025. Read the Rust 1.85.0 release announcement.
Edition numbers are calendar labels, not major language-version numbers: Rust 2024 is an edition, while Rust 1.85.0 is a numbered release. New releases support older editions, so using a newer compiler does not by itself require rewriting a crate to a newer edition.

What should Rust developers do now?
- Do not wait for Rust 2 to adopt Rust. There is no announced Rust 2 date or plan to target.
- Distinguish a compiler update from an edition migration. Numbered releases deliver changes; editions are opt-in for a crate.
- Check the edition your crate uses. A newer Rust release can still support crates on earlier editions.
- Assess edition changes on their own merits. The edition system is designed to permit selected changes while keeping older-edition crates and cross-edition dependencies supported.
Why hasn’t Rust released Rust 2.0?
Rust’s stability approach offers a practical alternative to using a major-version reset for every compatibility-sensitive change: stable features are supported in future releases, while editions provide an opt-in path for selected changes that cannot simply be introduced without regard to existing code. Mara Bos, writing for the Rust 2021 Edition Working Group, called the goal “stability without stagnation.” That explains the design rationale, but it is not evidence of a permanent ban on Rust 2.
