Sony’s 2025 download rankings also show PS4 titles still selling on PlayStation Store. The accurate answer is that PS4 releases are continuing, and no final cutoff has been published for the platform.
What Sony’s official material shows
- New PS4 announcements in 2026. The PlayStation Blog’s PS4 category includes dated 2026 announcements, including Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered. That category is a running feed rather than a fixed report, so check the post date on any individual announcement before making a claim about a specific release.
- PS4 downloads in 2025. Sony’s “PlayStation Store’s top downloads of 2025,” published January 14, 2026, ranks PS4 games in separate lists for US/Canada and Europe. The PS4 lists mix older titles with recent releases. Grand Theft Auto V appears on both regional PS4 lists, which shows that the platform’s catalog was still actively bought in 2025.
Neither source announces a stopping point. Sony’s download rankings measure PlayStation Store purchases, not how many games are in development, and a blog feed shows what has been announced, not what is planned for later.

What “stop making PS4 games” can actually mean
The question covers several separate things, and the official material treats them differently. The table below separates them and marks where no timeline was stated.

Keeping these apart prevents a common mistake. A game still being sold on the PlayStation Store is not evidence that new PS4 games are still being developed, and an announced PS4 title says nothing about whether PS4 hardware or online services will continue.

Why there is no single cutoff date
Each PS4 release is decided title by title. Sony’s first-party schedule and each third-party publisher’s schedule run separately, and neither is tied to one published end date for the platform. As a result, the platform does not have an announced finish line that a reader can look up. The absence of a date is not the same as a promise that releases will continue indefinitely, and Sony has not made that promise.
How to check whether a specific PS4 game is still coming
- Open the PlayStation Blog and select the PS4 category. Note the publication date of any announcement you find, since the feed mixes older and newer posts.
- Search the game’s title in PlayStation Store and open its store page. Check the platform listed and any release date shown there.
- Check the publisher’s own news page or official social accounts, because third-party publishers announce their own schedules.
- Treat a title with no announced date as unconfirmed, not cancelled. Only a dated announcement or an official statement from the publisher should be used as evidence of a release.
PS5 compatibility and what it means for buyers
The only official figure on PS4 games and PS5 is from Sony’s October 9, 2020 announcement. Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, wrote: “When the PlayStation 5 launches this November, more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5.” The statement describes the PS4 library available at that time, around the November 2020 PS5 launch. It is a historical compatibility claim, not a current compatibility list, and it does not confirm the status of every later title.

For a buyer, the practical point is that a PS4 game bought now is likely to remain playable on PS5 only if the title is in a compatible state. Check the store page for the specific game before assuming playback on PS5.

- A dated Sony or publisher announcement that a PS4 release window is closing.
- An official statement from Sony about PS4 hardware production or online service support.
- A change to PlayStation Store availability for PS4 titles, such as removals or delistings.
- New 2026 or later PS4 announcements in the PlayStation Blog category, which would continue the current picture.
Until one of these appears, PS4 releases are continuing, and no end date has been published.
