If Windows 10 will not open JPG or JPEG images, first determine whether the failure affects one file or every image. A single-file failure usually points to a damaged, mislabeled, incomplete, or unusually large file; failures across viewers and many files suggest an app or Windows-component problem. Set the .jpg association in Settings > Apps > Default apps, repair Microsoft Photos, and test the same image in another viewer before changing system components. Use Reset, reinstall Photos, or run DISM and SFC only when the less disruptive checks do not resolve the fault.
Why can’t Windows 10 open JPG files?
“JPG won’t open” describes several different faults. Double-clicking may do nothing, Photos may show a blank window, an error may appear, or the app may freeze. The correct fix depends on the scope of the failure:

- One image fails: the copy may be damaged, incomplete, have the wrong extension, or contain image data the selected app cannot handle.
- Every JPG fails in Photos: the file association or Photos installation is the likely starting point.
- Many images fail in several viewers: Windows components or the files themselves need broader investigation.
There is no generally published Windows 10 JPG-size cutoff that explains every failure. Treat an unusually large file as a test case rather than assuming a specific megabyte limit.
How do I tell whether the problem is one file or all JPGs?
Before changing settings, test the scope. Open two or three JPGs from different folders, including an image you know worked previously. Note whether the symptom is a blank window, an error, a freeze, or no response at all.

When only one JPG fails
Copy the original to a separate folder before experimenting. Check that the name really ends in .jpg or .jpeg and that Windows is not hiding a second extension such as .jpg.exe. Obtain a fresh copy from the original source or re-export the image if possible. If the replacement opens, the first copy—not Windows—was the problem.
When every JPG fails in Microsoft Photos
Try the same file with another installed image viewer. If it opens elsewhere, Windows can read the image and the issue is concentrated in Photos or its file association. Continue with the association check and Photos repair below.

Test a known-good image as well as the problem files. If known-good images also fail across applications, move to Windows component repair after completing the app-level checks. If only files from one source fail, suspect the transfer or export rather than the operating system.
How do I correct the JPG file association in Windows 10?
Windows can have a valid image viewer installed while .jpg is assigned to the wrong app or to no app. Microsoft’s supported file-type path is:

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- Use the search field to enter
.jpg. - Select the current default and choose Microsoft Photos or another installed viewer.
- Repeat the check for
.jpegif JPEG files show a different behavior.
Double-click the same image again. An association change is reversible and does not alter the image data, so it is the safest first repair when Photos does not launch or the wrong program opens.
How do I repair or reset Microsoft Photos?
If the association is correct but Photos still shows a blank window, freezes, or refuses to load images, use its built-in repair controls. Repair attempts to fix the app without clearing its stored data.

- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find and select Microsoft Photos.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, then try a JPG again.
Microsoft’s guidance says: “If it isn’t available or doesn’t fix the problem, select Reset.” Reset clears Photos’ stored app data, so record any app-specific preferences or OneDrive integration choices first. Your image files stored in ordinary folders are not replaced by the repair operation; the caution concerns Photos’ own settings and cached data.
When Repair is unavailable or ineffective
Return to the same Advanced options page and choose Reset. Reopen Photos and test both a known-good image and the image that originally failed. If Photos still fails while another viewer works, update or reinstall the app rather than repeatedly resetting it.

Should I update or reinstall Photos?
An outdated or damaged app package can prevent Photos from decoding images even when the files and association are correct. Open the Microsoft Store, check for available updates, and install any update for Photos. Restart Photos after the update and test again.
Reinstalling from Microsoft Store
Reinstall only after the association, Repair, Reset, and Store update have failed. Reinstallation removes and restores the app package, so it is more disruptive than Repair.

Advanced removal with PowerShell
If the normal uninstall path is unavailable, a Microsoft Q&A procedure uses PowerShell to remove the Photos package:
get-appxpackage *Microsoft.Windows.Photos* | remove-appxpackage
Run this only if you are comfortable with an administrative app-removal command. It removes the Photos package, not your JPG files; reinstall Photos from Microsoft Store immediately afterward. Close Photos first, and do not modify the command’s package name.

What does testing another viewer or a fresh copy tell me?
Using Open with is a diagnostic test, not merely a workaround. Right-click the JPG, choose Open with, and select another installed image viewer.
- Another viewer opens it: the image data is readable, so focus on Photos repair, reset, update, reinstall, or the default association.
- No viewer opens one file: preserve the original, verify its extension, and obtain a fresh copy or re-export. A wrong extension, an incomplete transfer, damaged image data, or an unusually large file can all produce this pattern.
- No viewer opens many files: test a known-good image from a different source. If it also fails, investigate Windows components rather than replacing every image.
Do not overwrite the only copy while troubleshooting. Work from a duplicate so that a failed conversion or re-export does not destroy evidence of what went wrong.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I repair Windows components with DISM and SFC?
Use system repair when multiple image files fail in multiple applications or when other Windows features are also behaving abnormally. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM supplies the files that SFC may need to repair the Windows image.
- Save open work.
- Open the Start menu, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run the deployment-image repair command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- At the same elevated prompt, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands have completed, then test a known-good JPG and the original problem file.
DISM repairs the component store used by Windows, while SFC scans protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid replacement is available. These commands affect Windows components, so do not substitute random switches or run them from a non-administrator prompt.

Which fix should I try first?
The order below moves from the least disruptive action to the broadest repair while preserving diagnostic information.
| Fix | Best scope | Reversibility | What it tells you | System impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Check .jpg/.jpeg defaults |
Photos does not launch or the wrong app opens | High; choose another default at any time | Whether Windows is routing the file to the intended viewer | File-association setting only |
| Photos Repair | JPGs fail in Photos but work elsewhere | High; app data is retained | Whether the installed app can fix itself without a reset | Limited to Photos |
| Photos Reset | Repair is unavailable or ineffective | Moderate; stored app data is cleared | Whether corrupted Photos data was causing the failure | Photos settings and cached data are removed |
| Another viewer or fresh copy | One file or uncertain file health | High; the original can be preserved | Whether the image is readable outside Photos | No Windows changes |
| Photos update or reinstall | Photos remains broken after Repair or Reset | Moderate; the app package is replaced | Whether the package itself was damaged or outdated | Photos is removed and restored |
| DISM followed by SFC | Many files fail in several applications | Lower; system components are repaired | Whether Windows image or protected files are damaged | Windows-wide component repair |
What common mistakes make JPG troubleshooting harder?
- Changing the extension without checking the data: renaming a non-JPEG file to
.jpgdoes not convert it. Verify the source and obtain a genuine fresh copy instead. - Resetting before testing: Repair is less disruptive and preserves Photos’ stored data, so try it first when available.
- Running SFC before DISM: follow Microsoft’s order; DISM repairs the image that SFC relies on.
- Assuming a size limit: Windows 10 has no universal JPG threshold established here. Compare the file with a smaller known-good image and test another viewer.
- Deleting the original: keep an untouched copy until you know whether the issue is the file, Photos, or Windows.
- Ignoring
.jpeg: a default set for.jpgdoes not automatically prove that.jpegis assigned correctly; check both extensions when symptoms differ.
Does the end of Windows 10 support explain this problem?
Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle date is important for security and update planning, but it is not evidence that the support end date directly disabled JPG viewing. The association, Photos, file-integrity, and Windows-component checks above remain the relevant troubleshooting path for an existing Windows 10 installation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will resetting Microsoft Photos delete the JPGs in my Pictures folder?
Reset clears Photos’ stored app data, such as its preferences and cached state. Keep a note of app-specific settings and cloud-integration choices, but ordinary JPG files in your folders should remain in place.
Can a JPG open in a browser but fail in Photos?
Yes. A browser or alternate viewer can decode the image even when Photos has a damaged package or incorrect association. Use that result to preserve the file and concentrate on Photos repair, reset, updating, or reinstalling.
Is there a universal maximum JPG size for Windows 10?
No single cutoff is established for this failure. Very large images are mentioned as a possible cause for an individual file, so compare with a known-good image and try another viewer rather than relying on an assumed limit.
Why check both .jpg and .jpeg defaults?
Windows stores defaults by file type. If one extension is assigned to Photos and the other is assigned elsewhere, files that look identical can launch different applications and appear to fail inconsistently.
