When a Windows 10 cursor freezes, first determine whether the mouse or touchpad has lost its connection, whether its driver has failed, or whether Windows itself is no longer responding. Start with the physical path: restore power, reconnect the device, try another USB port without a hub, reset a wireless receiver, and test the mouse on another computer. If the pointer works elsewhere, update or reinstall the Windows driver; if Ctrl+Alt+Delete also fails during the incident, treat it as a wider system freeze and collect diagnostic evidence after recovery.
The sequence below moves from quick, reversible checks to driver repair and, only for severe recurring freezes, crash-dump collection. It applies to a USB mouse, wireless mouse, and built-in touchpad, with separate branches for a pointer that will not move, a pointer that moves but will not click, and a computer that is frozen beyond the pointer.

What does a frozen cursor usually indicate?
A frozen pointer is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The pattern of the failure narrows the cause and prevents you from changing drivers when the real problem is a dead battery or an unresponsive computer.
| What you see | Most useful first suspicion | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The pointer does not move at all | No power, bad cable or receiver, failed USB port, depleted battery, blocked sensor, or a defective mouse | Reconnect the device, try a different port, remove any hub, check power or batteries, and clean the sensor |
| The pointer moves but clicks do nothing | Mouse hardware, driver/device state, or a broader Windows hang | Try another mouse and press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to see whether Windows still responds |
| Only the touchpad stops | Touchpad setting, hotkey state, or an outdated/missing touchpad driver | Check the touchpad control or keyboard hotkey, then repair the driver in Device Manager |
| The pointer and other applications stop responding | A system-wide Windows freeze rather than a mouse-only fault | Record the trigger and frequency, test Ctrl+Alt+Delete or remote access, then review logs after recovery |
Do not infer how common the problem is from an individual incident: no reliable prevalence figure establishes how often Windows 10 cursor freezes occur. The practical goal is isolation—identify which component fails and under what conditions.

How do I fix a cursor that will not move?
Work through the physical connection before touching software. These checks are fast, do not alter Windows, and often reveal a dead link immediately.
- Confirm power. For a wired mouse, inspect the cable and connector for visible damage. For a wireless mouse, turn it on and replace its batteries if needed.
- Reconnect the device. Unplug the USB mouse, wait briefly, and plug it back in firmly. If it is connected through a hub, bypass the hub and connect directly to the computer.
- Try another USB port. A different port separates a port fault from a mouse fault. Reconnect directly rather than through an adapter or hub while testing.
- Inspect the cable and sensor. Look for kinks, frayed insulation, or a loose plug. Remove dirt from the optical sensor opening; debris can prevent movement from being detected.
- Check the computer’s response. If the pointer remains still, use the keyboard to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. A security screen that appears indicates that Windows is responding and the problem may be confined to the pointing device.
If none of these actions restores movement, continue with the wireless reset or cross-test rather than repeatedly reconnecting the same hardware.
How do I reset a wireless mouse or receiver?
A wireless link can fail even when the mouse has power. Reset the link before reinstalling drivers.
Mouse with a reset control
Use the mouse’s reset or pairing control if the model provides one. Follow its normal pairing sequence, then move the pointer again. Keep the receiver connected directly to the PC while testing.
USB wireless receiver
- Unplug the receiver from the computer.
- Wait about 10 seconds.
- Reconnect it to a USB port, preferably one that is not shared through a hub.
- Test movement and clicking before changing Windows settings.
If the receiver and mouse still fail, cross-test the device. A reset cannot repair a damaged receiver, failed switch, or depleted battery.
How can I tell whether the mouse or the Windows PC is at fault?
Test the same mouse on another computer with the correct driver. This is the clearest low-risk isolation step because it changes the computer while keeping the peripheral constant.

- It fails on the other computer too: the mouse, cable, receiver, or battery is the likely fault. Replacement is reasonable, especially after checking power and cleaning the sensor.
- It works on the other computer: the original PC’s USB port, Windows driver, or software remains suspect. Return to that PC and perform the driver and system checks below.
Also note whether another mouse works on the affected PC. A known-good wired USB mouse is useful as a temporary control device and as a second cross-test. Record which combinations work instead of relying on memory.
Is Windows itself frozen, or is only the cursor stuck?
During the incident, test another route into Windows. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and see whether the security screen appears. If you administer the computer remotely, check whether a remote session still responds. A responding security screen or remote session points toward a mouse, port, receiver, or driver issue; failure of those paths suggests a wider system freeze.
Record the trigger
After the computer recovers, write down what operation preceded the freeze, how long the event lasted, and how often it occurs. Note whether it happens after a particular application, during a game, after resume, or while the system is idle, but do not assume the application is responsible without evidence.
Compare the scope
State whether only one mouse is affected, whether a second mouse behaves the same way, and whether more than one computer shows the failure. Scope and repeatability are more useful to support staff than a description such as “the cursor randomly stopped.”
How do I update or reinstall the Windows 10 pointing-device driver?
Windows Update is Microsoft’s recommended first source for hardware drivers. If the pointer works intermittently or another mouse lets you control the PC, use that working input device to apply updates.
Use Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Check for updates and install available hardware or driver updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it, then test the original mouse or touchpad.
Windows Update may not offer a newer package immediately. If the problem persists, inspect the device directly in Device Manager.

Update a device in Device Manager
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the category that contains the pointing device.
- Select the device, open its Driver tab, and choose the update option.
- Allow Windows to search for an available driver, then restart and test.
For a touchpad, inspect both Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices; the device can appear in either category depending on the computer.
Reinstall a touchpad device
If updating does not help, uninstall the touchpad device from Device Manager and restart Windows. Reinstalling forces Windows to make a fresh driver-download attempt. Keep a USB mouse or another input method available so you can navigate if the touchpad is unavailable during the restart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA missing or out-of-date driver is one documented cause of a nonworking touchpad. If updating or reinstalling does not restore it, contact the computer’s manufacturer, as Microsoft recommends for unresolved touchpad problems.
What should I do when the pointer moves but clicks fail?
Movement with no clicking narrows the fault to button hardware, the pointing-device driver, or Windows responsiveness. Do not assume that a frozen click means the entire computer is locked.
- Try both primary and secondary buttons. If one works and the other does not, the switch or mouse hardware is suspect.
- Try a second mouse on the same PC. If the second mouse clicks normally, replace or repair the original device.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. If the security screen appears, Windows is processing keyboard input and the issue is less likely to be a complete system freeze.
- If clicking fails with multiple mice and Ctrl+Alt+Delete does not respond, record the event as a system freeze and follow the evidence-collection steps below after recovery.
When a device works on another computer but not on this one, prioritize the affected PC’s driver, USB path, and software state rather than discarding the mouse immediately.
How do I troubleshoot a touchpad that freezes?
First check whether the touchpad has been disabled by its keyboard hotkey or settings control. Many laptops provide a dedicated key or key combination; use the computer’s own touchpad control to re-enable it, then test.

If the touchpad remains unresponsive, use an external mouse and repair the driver. In Device Manager, check Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices, update the touchpad driver, and, if necessary, uninstall the touchpad device and restart so Windows attempts a fresh download.
Do not confuse a touchpad-only failure with a frozen Windows session. If an external mouse and keyboard continue to work, the touchpad path is the more likely fault. If all input and applications stop, use the system-freeze procedure instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I collect evidence after the cursor recovers?
Recurring freezes need evidence, not repeated guesses. Gather information immediately after recovery while the timing and trigger are still clear.
Review event logs
Open Event Viewer and review the System and Application logs around the time of the freeze. Look for entries at the incident time and record the event source, ID, and message. The logs may not identify a mouse directly, but they can show whether Windows recorded a driver, service, or application failure.
Recommended Free Tools
Generate a performance report
Open a Command Prompt and run:
perfmon /report
Allow the report to complete, then save its findings with the date and time of the incident. Use it alongside the event-log entries and your trigger notes when comparing repeated freezes.
Keep a concise incident record
- Date and approximate time
- What operation preceded the freeze
- Whether the pointer moved, clicked, or neither
- Whether Ctrl+Alt+Delete or remote access responded
- Which mouse, port, receiver, and computer were involved
- What action restored operation, if any
This record lets you distinguish a repeatable driver event from an isolated cable, battery, or receiver failure.

When should I collect a complete memory dump?
Use advanced dump collection only for severe, recurring system-wide freezes that survive peripheral and driver isolation. Microsoft documents complete memory dumps and the CrashOnCtrlScroll method for investigating such hangs.
Dump collection is not a first-line mouse repair. It requires registry changes, a registry backup before editing, and a page file at least 100 MB larger than the installed RAM. A dump can contain extensive system memory, so store it securely and involve an administrator or support professional who can interpret it.
Before enabling the method, confirm that the failure is genuinely system-wide: multiple input devices show the same behavior, Ctrl+Alt+Delete does not respond during the event, and the problem recurs. If only one mouse fails and it also fails on another PC, replacing the peripheral is more appropriate than configuring crash diagnostics.
When should I contact the computer manufacturer?
Escalate after you have completed the physical checks, cross-tested the device, installed available Windows updates, and updated or reinstalled the relevant driver. Include your incident record, Event Viewer findings, perfmon /report output, and the exact device categories and driver actions you tried.
For a touchpad that still fails after updating or reinstalling, Microsoft directs users to the Windows device manufacturer. For a mouse that fails on multiple computers, the peripheral maker or a replacement is the appropriate path. Separating those two cases prevents a laptop service request from being opened for a defective USB mouse, or a mouse replacement from hiding a Windows-wide freeze.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I replace the mouse if it freezes only on one Windows 10 computer?
Not immediately. If it works on another computer, keep the mouse and investigate the original PC’s USB port, driver, and Windows state; replacing it is more justified when the same device fails on multiple computers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is a wired mouse useful for diagnosing a wireless or touchpad problem?
Yes. A directly connected wired USB mouse removes batteries, radio pairing, and touchpad hardware from the test, giving you a known-good way to control Windows while you repair drivers or collect logs.
What information will support need for a recurring cursor freeze?
Give support the trigger, frequency, affected devices, whether Ctrl+Alt+Delete or remote access responded, and the times of related System and Application log entries. Include the generated performance report rather than describing the event only as random.
Can a complete memory dump help with a mouse-only failure?
Usually not. Dump collection is intended for severe, recurring system-wide hangs; a peripheral that fails its cross-PC test points toward replacement or hardware service instead.
