If your Windows 10 settings reset to default after reboot, first find out whether Windows loaded your normal user profile. A temporary profile can make settings and files appear to vanish when you sign out, while a mandatory profile, Group Policy, or reset-on-reboot software can intentionally restore a standard configuration. A damaged profile is another possibility.
Before signing out again, save any files created or edited during the affected session. Then check for the messages “We can’t sign in to your account” or a temporary-profile warning. Those observations—along with whether files disappear and whether the computer is managed by work or school—determine the safest next step.

Why do Windows 10 settings reset after a restart?
There is no single Windows 10 fault behind this symptom. The cause usually falls into one of four categories:
- Temporary profile: Windows could not load your normal profile and signed you in with a temporary one. Changes made there may be discarded at sign-out.
- Mandatory or non-persistent profile: An administrator has configured the computer to discard user changes, which is common on kiosks, classroom PCs, and other shared systems.
- Policy or software enforcement: Group Policy, mobile-device management, or an application may reapply selected settings.
- Corrupted user profile: The original profile may no longer load or save correctly, requiring migration to a new account.
The pattern matters. If many unrelated preferences and personal files disappear together, profile loading is more likely. If only one setting—such as a browser choice, wallpaper, or security option—changes, a policy or application may be enforcing it instead.

What should I do before signing out?
Protect work created since the last successful sign-in. Microsoft Support warns: “Any files you have created or changed while in the temporary profile will be lost when you sign out.” Treat that warning literally.
- Copy documents, photos, downloads, project folders, and other recent work to an external drive or another storage location.
- If an application stores data in a profile folder, use that application’s own export or save feature as well.
- Do not delete the old profile, create a replacement account, or run Reset this PC until the backup opens successfully from the other location.
- Record which settings changed and whether files are missing. This gives you a comparison after each restart.
An external drive is a way to preserve files; it does not repair a temporary profile, policy, or corrupted account.

Look for a notification that Windows signed you in with a temporary profile, or the message “We can’t sign in to your account.” Windows uses a temporary profile when it cannot load the normal one, so settings and files from the normal profile may not be present.
Check the profile warning
Read the notification area and any sign-in banner before dismissing it. A temporary-profile message is a strong explanation for settings that revert after sign-out; it does not prove that every settings-reset problem has this cause.
Try Safe Mode, then a normal restart
- Save the files described above.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, choose Restart now.
- In the recovery menus, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select Safe Mode.
- Sign in with the original account, restart normally, and check whether the same profile and settings load.
Microsoft notes that more than one restart may be necessary. Check the profile warning after each attempt rather than assuming the first reboot settled the issue.
Use a harmless persistence test
As a practical, low-confidence check, create a small text file in a familiar folder and change one non-critical setting. After a restart, see whether both remain. If files persist but one preference does not, the issue may be limited to that setting or an application that controls it. If both disappear, profile loading or a deliberately non-persistent environment deserves priority. This comparison is a diagnostic heuristic, not an official Microsoft test.

Could a work, school, kiosk, or shared PC be designed to discard changes?
Yes. Microsoft documents a mandatory user profile as an administrator-configured profile whose changes during a session are not saved. Kiosks, educational computers, libraries, and other shared devices may use this design so every user starts from the same baseline.
Ask the administrator before changing Windows
On an organization-owned computer, ask IT whether the profile is mandatory, the device resets at reboot, or a management product restores settings. A reset that is intentional cannot be fixed by rebuilding your personal account; the administrator must change the configuration or provide a different device.
Understand what Group Policy can do
Group Policy can configure Windows behavior, and domain-joined computers commonly receive policy from an organization’s IT systems. Mobile-device management can apply similar controls. If only selected settings revert, policy or software enforcement is possible, but the affected machine must be checked to identify which rule is responsible.
Do not begin by editing the registry or disabling policy on a managed computer. Those changes can violate organizational controls, fail to persist, or create a support and security problem. Ordinary users should document the setting that returns and give that information to the administrator.

Change one item at a time and reboot between tests. Keep a note of the original value, the value after reboot, and whether the behavior occurs for another user account. That record is more useful to support staff than a list of suspected registry keys.
How do I test whether the original profile is corrupted?
Sign in with another existing account, if one is available, and observe whether its settings persist. A second account that behaves normally makes corruption in the original profile more likely; if every account resets, system policy or reset-on-reboot software is more likely.
Do not use a test account as proof that the original files are safe. Continue backing up the original profile and avoid deleting it while you compare behavior.
How do I move to a new administrator account?
When the original profile remains unreliable, Microsoft’s documented path is to create a new local administrator account, sign in to it, and copy personal files from the old profile.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Family & other users.
- Choose Add someone else to this PC.
- Follow the account-creation prompts. If Windows asks for an online account and you need a local one, choose the option to add a user without a Microsoft account when it is offered.
- Select the new account under Family & other users, choose Change account type, select Administrator, and confirm.
- Sign out, sign in to the new account, and restart once to verify that its settings persist.
- Copy personal files carefully from the old profile folders. Keep the old account and your external backup until you have opened the copied files and confirmed that required data is present.
Copy personal data rather than blindly copying every hidden profile file. Replacing the new profile’s configuration wholesale can bring the corruption back. Microsoft also warns that some applications may need to be configured or reinstalled, and Microsoft Store applications may require you to sign in again.

When should I use Windows recovery or Reset this PC?
Use recovery options only after protecting files and trying less disruptive explanations. Microsoft recommends backing up important data and working through recovery choices before resetting Windows.
Consider what changed immediately before the symptom
If the settings began reverting after a Windows update, an update-removal option may be relevant. That decision depends on the timing and on whether the computer is managed; do not remove updates solely because a temporary profile is present.

Understand the impact of Reset this PC
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and can remove applications and settings. It is not a routine fix for a profile-persistence problem. Back up files first, confirm that the backup opens, and check with IT before resetting a work or school device.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle date affects Microsoft’s current support and security position, but it does not identify why a particular computer loses settings. If recovery fails on a managed device, the organization’s IT department is the appropriate escalation path.

| Observation | Most useful path | Disruption and risk |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary-profile notice or “We can’t sign in to your account”; recent files also disappear | Back up immediately, try Safe Mode and a normal restart, and confirm that the original profile loads. | Signing out before backup can lose temporary-profile work. |
| Work, school, kiosk, or shared computer; changes vanish for everyone | Ask the administrator whether a mandatory profile or reset-on-reboot policy is intentional. | Local changes may be discarded by design; unauthorized policy edits can create support and security issues. |
| Only selected settings revert, while files and most preferences persist | Identify the application, Group Policy rule, or management control that owns the setting. | Changing the wrong system setting may be overwritten again or break managed configuration. |
| Original account remains unstable, but a new account behaves normally | Create a new local administrator account and copy personal files carefully. | Applications may need reconfiguration or reinstallation; Store apps may require sign-in. |
| Backups are verified and less disruptive steps fail | Review Windows recovery options and consider Reset this PC only as a later measure. | Reset can remove applications and settings and requires recovery work afterward. |
What information should I give support?
Record the exact settings that change, whether personal files disappear, the wording of any sign-in warning, whether the behavior affects another account, and whether the PC belongs to an organization. Include when the problem began and whether it followed an update or application installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will restarting Windows in Safe Mode delete my files?
Safe Mode itself is a diagnostic startup mode and is not intended to erase personal files. The risk in this situation is signing out while Windows is using a temporary profile, so copy recent work elsewhere before testing it.
Why do my desktop files disappear but downloaded files remain?
Different folders may be supplied by different profiles, synchronization services, or applications. Compare the file paths and test another account; the pattern alone cannot establish whether the profile is temporary or a folder is being redirected.
Can antivirus software cause Windows settings to revert?
A security or management application can reapply selected values, but the symptom does not identify a particular product. Note which settings change and check the computer’s management or application logs with your administrator or vendor support.
Should I delete the old Windows user profile after creating a new one?
Not immediately. Keep the old profile and a verified backup until personal files open correctly, required applications work, and the new account survives several normal restarts.
