If Windows 10 Update Assistant has shown 99% for less than four hours, keep the computer powered on, connected to a reliable network, and give it time. If it has stayed at 99% for more than four hours, Microsoft’s documented recovery is to copy C:$GetCurrentMedia somewhere safe before restarting, then resume Setup after the reboot. Do not restart first: Microsoft warns that the folder may be unavailable afterward. Back up personal files before changing anything, and remember that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a repaired upgrade is a legacy recovery rather than a return to a fully supported platform.
What should I do when Windows 10 Update Assistant is stuck at 99%?
A 99% display is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Microsoft says to apply its exact 99% recovery procedure only when the progress has been stuck for more than four hours. The safest order is: preserve the in-progress Media folder, restart, put that folder back, run Setup, defer updates during setup, and install available updates after Windows finishes.

“If the progress of the Windows Upgrade Assistant is stuck at 99% for more than four hours, follow these steps to attempt to fix the issue:”
That procedure does not prove every 99% stall has the same cause. It protects the upgrade files while giving Setup a clean chance to continue.

Should I restart immediately at 99%?
No. Restarting before preserving the upgrade files can remove the folder Microsoft needs for the recovery. First copy the folder, and only then restart.
Back up your files and prepare the PC
- Back up documents, game saves, photos, and other irreplaceable files to another disk or a USB flash drive for Windows backup.
- Connect the PC to mains power. Avoid attempting the procedure while a laptop is running only on battery.
- Use an administrator account, and close applications that could lock files.
- Keep a stable internet connection available for the later update checks.
Make hidden upgrade files visible
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:$GetCurrent. - If you cannot see
Media, open View > Show/hide > Hidden items. - Copy the entire
Mediafolder to the desktop. Copying, rather than moving, leaves the original in place until the restart.
If C:$GetCurrent or its Media folder is missing, do not improvise by restarting and hoping the assistant recreates it. Use the Windows Update troubleshooting path below instead.
How do I resume the upgrade after saving the Media folder?
Once the desktop copy exists, follow Microsoft’s sequence exactly. The order matters because Setup must find the preserved files after Windows starts again.
- Restart Windows and sign in normally.
- Copy the desktop
Mediafolder back toC:$GetCurrent. Approve administrator prompts if Windows requests them. - Open the restored
Mediafolder and runSetup. - When the installer displays the “Get important updates” screen, select Not right now. This lets the upgrade complete without immediately adding another update operation to the stalled process.
- Continue through the Windows 10 upgrade screens and allow the computer to restart when Setup requires it.
- After Windows reaches the desktop, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install what Windows offers, and restart again.
The final update check is separate from the interrupted Assistant run. It ensures that updates available to that Windows 10 installation are applied after the operating-system upgrade.
What if the Media-folder recovery does not work?
Use the built-in Windows 10 troubleshooter before making more invasive changes. It is lower risk than deleting the update cache or changing drivers.

- Select Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
- Let Windows apply any recommended repair, then restart when it finishes.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not repair the problem, note the message rather than repeatedly launching the Assistant. The wording can indicate whether the next useful action concerns storage, a service, or a driver.

Which broader Windows Update fixes should I try next?
Microsoft’s general sequence addresses the common blockers behind a failed upgrade. Work from the least disruptive checks toward administrator-level changes, testing Windows Update after each meaningful change.
1. Confirm power, network, and account conditions
- Keep the computer connected to power throughout downloading and installation.
- Use a stable internet connection; avoid switching between networks during setup.
- Sign in with an administrator account so the updater can change protected system components.
- Disconnect unnecessary external storage, docks, hubs, printers, and other hardware. Leave only devices required to operate the PC.
2. Reset the Windows Update cache
A damaged or incomplete cache can make an update appear to stop near completion. Microsoft’s documented reset uses the Services console:
- Press the Windows key, type
services.msc, and open the Services app as an administrator. - Find Windows Update, open its context menu, and choose Stop.
- In File Explorer, open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionand delete the contents inside that folder. Do not delete the folder itself. - Return to Services, open Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart Windows, then run Check for updates again.
Deleting the cache removes downloaded update material, so Windows may need to download it again. Do not interrupt the first scan after this reset merely because the percentage moves slowly.
3. Correct date, time, and time zone
Open Windows date and time settings, enable automatic time and automatic time zone, and use the synchronization option if it is available. An incorrect clock can prevent secure update connections even when ordinary web browsing works.

4. Check drivers after hardware changes
Update third-party drivers, with particular attention to hardware added shortly before the stall. Storage controllers, graphics devices, network adapters, and security software components can all affect an upgrade. If a problem began immediately after adding hardware, temporarily disconnecting that device and obtaining a current driver from its manufacturer is a more targeted test than changing unrelated settings.
5. Verify free space
Microsoft states that an upgrade needs at least the following free space on the system drive:
| Installed Windows architecture | Minimum free space stated by Microsoft |
|---|---|
| 32-bit | 16 GB |
| 64-bit | 20 GB |
These are minimums, not a promise that every machine with exactly that amount will complete. Remove or move large files only after backing them up, empty the Recycle Bin, and leave additional working room when possible. If the upgrade lacks space, Microsoft notes that a USB drive may be needed to provide temporary capacity.
6. Run Windows Update again
After the checks above, run Windows Update and restart to apply anything it installs. A restart can be required before the Assistant recognizes that a prerequisite update has completed.

Why does the Upgrade Assistant stop at 99%?
The final percentage does not identify one universal failure. Microsoft’s update-problem categories point to several different blockers, so the most useful fix depends on what changed on the PC and what the system reports.

| Possible blocker | Clues | Most relevant response |
|---|---|---|
| Corrupted update files or cache | The process repeatedly fails at a similar point, or previous updates were interrupted. | Preserve Media first; if that fails, reset SoftwareDistribution. |
| Slow or interrupted update operation | The percentage has not changed, but disk or network activity continues. | Keep power and connectivity stable; apply the four-hour rule before the special recovery. |
| Connection problems | Downloads pause, error messages mention contacting the service, or the network changes during setup. | Use a stable connection and retry after reconnecting. |
| Insufficient disk space | The system drive is near full or Setup reports a storage requirement. | Meet the architecture-specific free-space minimum and provide more working room. |
| Incompatible or outdated drivers | The issue started after hardware was added or a driver was changed. | Update or temporarily disconnect the suspect hardware. |
| Corrupted system files or incorrect configuration | Other Windows components behave unpredictably, not just the Assistant. | Use the troubleshooter and Microsoft’s advanced servicing guidance. |
| Permission problems | The account cannot modify protected folders or Setup requests credentials repeatedly. | Sign in with an administrator account and approve legitimate elevation prompts. |
| Windows Update service stopped | Updates do not scan or the service is disabled or stopped. | Check the Windows Update service in services.msc and start it before scanning. |
Which fix should I choose first?
Use the following decision guide to avoid jumping straight to the most disruptive option.
| Situation | Best next action | Risk and effort |
|---|---|---|
| 99% for fewer than four hours | Wait with power and network connected. | Lowest; no system changes. |
99% for more than four hours and Media exists |
Copy C:$GetCurrentMedia, restart, restore it, and run Setup. |
Moderate; requires careful file handling. |
No usable Media folder |
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. | Low; guided settings repair. |
| Repeated failures after troubleshooting | Reset the update cache, correct time settings, check drivers, and verify space. | Moderate to high; administrator access and redownloads may be required. |
| Persistent failure with unclear cause | Review servicing-stack and cumulative-update status and collect Windows Update logs. | Advanced; useful for technical support or an experienced administrator. |
How can I investigate a persistent failure?
For advanced diagnosis, Microsoft Learn directs administrators to verify that the servicing-stack update and current cumulative updates are present and to examine Windows Update logs. Those checks are appropriate when the same machine fails repeatedly after the cache reset and driver, time, network, and storage checks.
Record the exact error code, the time the stall began, recent hardware or driver changes, available system-drive space, and whether the troubleshooter made a change. This information helps support personnel distinguish a service problem from a damaged installation. Avoid deleting additional system folders or disabling security protections without a specific, documented reason.

Third-party startup software can interfere with setup, but a clean boot changes how Windows starts and requires careful restoration afterward. Use it only when the native steps fail and you can document which services were changed. If administrator-level driver or service work is outside your comfort level, a reputable PC repair professional can reduce the risk of deleting the wrong files; back up personal data before handing over the machine.
Does Windows 10 still receive updates after this problem is fixed?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after that date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The recovery steps above can complete a legacy upgrade that was already in progress, but they do not restore ongoing support.

After the PC is stable, check whether it meets Windows 11 eligibility requirements or plan a move to another supported operating system. Make that decision separately from the immediate 99% recovery so an urgent installer problem does not lead to an unplanned data loss.
When should I stop troubleshooting and seek help?
- Stop and back up immediately if the drive reports errors, files disappear, or Windows cannot start normally.
- Do not force power off while Setup is actively applying changes unless the computer has clearly failed and you have exhausted the documented recovery path.
- Seek technical help when repeated attempts produce different error codes, the system partition cannot be accessed, or you cannot safely work with administrator permissions.
- Before a repair or reinstall, verify that personal files and game saves exist in a separate backup.
A 99% reading alone is not evidence that the installation is unrecoverable. Preserving the upgrade material before restarting gives Microsoft’s supported recovery the best chance, while the later checks address storage, services, drivers, connectivity, and configuration issues that can produce the same symptom.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I close the laptop lid while the Assistant is at 99%?
Avoid sleep or hibernation during the wait and recovery. Change the power plan temporarily so closing the lid does not suspend the PC, and keep ventilation clear while Setup is running.
What if Windows says I do not have permission to copy C:$GetCurrentMedia?
Sign in with an administrator account and approve the elevation prompt. If access is still denied, do not take ownership of random system folders; use the Windows Update troubleshooter or qualified support instead.
Will resetting SoftwareDistribution delete my personal files or installed games?
The reset removes downloaded Windows Update cache contents, not documents or installed applications. You should still keep a current backup because any system repair or upgrade can fail independently of the cache.
Is a clean installation required when the Upgrade Assistant reaches 99%?
No. Microsoft’s first recovery path is an in-place continuation using the preserved Media folder. A clean installation is a separate decision that erases or replaces the existing installation and should be considered only after secure backups and a supported migration plan.
