Windows 11 usually does not need a separate “PS4 controller driver.” A DUALSHOCK 4 normally relies on Windows’ built-in USB, Bluetooth, and HID support. The correct fix depends on where detection fails: the cable and USB path, Bluetooth pairing, Windows’ device driver, or the game’s input system.
Start with a known-good data-capable micro-USB cable and test the controller in joy.cpl. If it appears there and responds, stop reinstalling drivers: Windows recognizes the controller, and the remaining problem is usually Steam Input, DS4Windows, or game compatibility.

Identify the failure before changing drivers
Match your symptom to the most likely layer:

Sony documents DUALSHOCK 4 connections to Windows PCs through a compatible micro-USB cable or the DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor. That does not mean every PC game supports PlayStation controllers directly. Sony’s PC gaming support page distinguishes the connection from application compatibility.

Quick checks that solve many detection failures
- Turn off the controller by holding the PS button until the light turns off.
- Charge it sufficiently and disconnect it from the PS4 or another nearby device.
- Try a different micro-USB cable explicitly labeled for data or syncing. A charging light does not prove that the cable carries data.
- Connect directly to the PC rather than through a USB hub, dock, or monitor. On a desktop, try a rear motherboard USB port.
- Restart Windows after removing a device or reinstalling a driver.
- If possible, test both USB and Bluetooth. USB isolates the controller’s wired path; Bluetooth tests the PC’s wireless adapter and pairing state.
Microsoft also recommends direct USB connections while troubleshooting input devices and checking or reinstalling the relevant Bluetooth driver when Bluetooth devices fail to connect. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.

Fix USB detection
1. Replace the cable and USB port
The orange charging light only proves that the controller receives power. It does not prove that the cable carries data, that the controller’s USB socket is working, or that Windows has enumerated a game device.
Use a known-good data-capable micro-USB cable. Connect it directly to another USB port, avoiding hubs and docks. Watch Device Manager while plugging and unplugging the controller; a device entry should appear, disappear, or change when the connection is made.
2. Inspect the relevant Device Manager categories
Right-click Start, select Device Manager, and inspect:
- Human Interface Devices
- Sound, video and game controllers
- Universal Serial Bus controllers
- Other devices
Look for entries such as HID-compliant game controller, Wireless Controller, USB Input Device, Unknown USB Device, or Device Descriptor Request Failed.
If a clearly related failed entry appears, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, unplug the controller, restart Windows, and reconnect it. Do not remove unrelated USB, networking, or Bluetooth hardware merely because it is listed nearby. Microsoft’s USB and input-device guidance covers reconnecting devices and driver-loading failures.
3. Test the Windows game-controller interface
Press Win + R, enter joy.cpl, and press Enter. Select the controller, choose Properties, then use the Test tab.

- No controller appears: continue with USB, Bluetooth, and HID troubleshooting.
- The controller appears and responds: Windows recognizes it. Troubleshoot the game, Steam, or DS4Windows instead of reinstalling the basic driver.
- It appears but produces no input: check for disabled, hidden, duplicate, or incorrectly mapped devices.
You can open Device Manager directly with devmgmt.msc. These commands open built-in Windows tools; they do not download a third-party driver.

Fix Bluetooth pairing
1. Remove the stale Windows pairing
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Find an old entry such as Wireless Controller.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Remove device.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait several seconds, and turn it back on.
A DUALSHOCK 4 can be paired with only one device at a time. Turn off the PS4 and disconnect nearby computers or phones that may reclaim the controller.
2. Put the controller into pairing mode
- Turn off the controller and unplug its USB cable.
- Hold SHARE + PS together.
- Release them when the light bar begins flashing.
- In Windows, select Add device > Bluetooth.
- Choose Wireless Controller and wait for the pairing confirmation.
Open Bluetooth settings quickly with ms-settings:bluetooth. Sony’s pairing instructions specify that the cable should be disconnected while pairing.
If “Wireless Controller” does not appear
- Move the controller close to the PC.
- Check its charge level.
- Restart the PC and repeat pairing mode.
- Remove nearby Bluetooth devices temporarily.
- Try another Bluetooth device with the PC. If none connect, the PC adapter or its driver may be the problem.
- Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter through the Windows Get Help app.
- Open Device Manager and check whether the Bluetooth adapter is present and error-free.
Microsoft lists pairing mode, range, battery level, Bluetooth services, device configuration, and driver problems among common causes of Bluetooth connection failures.
Update or reinstall the correct driver
The “driver” that needs repair is usually not a Sony PS4 driver. Depending on the failure, it may be the PC’s Bluetooth adapter driver, a USB device entry, a HID entry, or a third-party virtual-controller component.

- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Identify the adapter, which may be labeled Bluetooth Radio, Intel Wireless Bluetooth, Realtek Bluetooth, or with a PC manufacturer’s name.
- Right-click the adapter and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and try pairing again.
If Windows finds nothing, download the current Bluetooth package from the computer, laptop, motherboard, or adapter manufacturer. Avoid generic driver-download websites. Microsoft specifically recommends the manufacturer’s driver when Windows cannot find a newer one.

Reinstall the Bluetooth adapter
- Record the adapter’s name and download a replacement driver first.
- In Device Manager, right-click the Bluetooth adapter and choose Uninstall device.
- Only select an option to remove the driver package if you already have the manufacturer’s replacement available.
- Restart Windows.
- If the adapter does not return, open Device Manager and choose Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Install the manufacturer’s package if required, restart again, and re-pair the controller.
Do not delete every Bluetooth entry indiscriminately. Removing unrelated networking hardware can create a second problem and rarely fixes a controller that was never enumerated.
Reset the DUALSHOCK 4
Resetting the controller can clear a stuck pairing or connection state, but it does not remove a broken Bluetooth record from Windows. You may need to do both.
- Turn off the controller.
- Disconnect it from USB.
- Locate the small reset hole on the back, near the L2 shoulder button.
- Press the recessed button with a paper clip or similar tool for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect it with a compatible data cable and test it.
These steps follow Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 reset procedure. After resetting, remove any old Windows Bluetooth entry before pairing again.
Windows detects the controller, but a game does not
If the controller responds in joy.cpl, Windows recognition is no longer the main problem. Many PC games expect XInput, the input standard commonly associated with Xbox controllers, while a DUALSHOCK 4 may expose a different input interface. Other games support PlayStation controllers directly but vary in their button prompts and configuration.
Do not use the game’s controller menu as the first diagnostic. Test the operating system first, then choose one input path.
Steam games
- Try Steam’s PlayStation controller support first.
- If Steam detects the controller, test the game with Steam Input enabled or disabled according to that title’s configuration.
- Do not run DS4Windows and Steam’s controller remapping simultaneously during initial testing.
Steam Input behavior can vary by game and Steam configuration, so there is no single toggle that fixes every title.

Non-Steam or XInput-only games
DS4Windows can translate a DUALSHOCK 4 into a virtual Xbox/XInput controller. It is an input mapper and emulator, not a replacement for Windows’ USB, Bluetooth, or HID support. The DS4Windows project identifies Windows 10 and 11 support and uses components such as ViGEmBus for virtual-controller output.
Use it only after the physical controller appears in Windows:
- Confirm the controller responds in
joy.cpl. - Obtain DS4Windows from its legitimate project source and follow its setup requirements.
- Close other controller mappers and remappers while testing.
- Check whether HidHide is hiding the wrong device.
- Ensure the intended physical or virtual controller is visible, but not both in a way that creates duplicate input.
- Test the virtual controller in Windows before launching the game.
ViGEmBus or HidHide cannot repair a controller that Windows cannot enumerate physically. Installing Steam Input, DS4Windows, ViGEmBus, HidHide, and other mapper utilities together can cause double input, hidden devices, or conflicting mappings.

The controller appears only as an audio device
The DUALSHOCK 4 can expose audio-related functions over USB or Bluetooth. An audio entry alone does not prove that the game-controller HID interface loaded. Check the HID and game-controller categories and test with joy.cpl. If it appears only as audio over USB, try a different data cable and direct USB port before installing software.
It reconnects to the PS4
Turn off or disconnect the PS4, reset the controller if necessary, remove the old Windows pairing, and pair again with SHARE + PS. The controller can retain a pairing with another device and connect there instead.

Bluetooth works but DS4Windows does not
Check whether the controller is disabled in Device Manager, hidden by an incorrect HidHide rule, claimed by Steam or another mapper, connected to a different computer, or affected by an unstable Bluetooth adapter. These are separate problems and should not be addressed by repeatedly reinstalling every component.
DS4Windows sees it but the game does not
Confirm that the game expects XInput, that the virtual controller is enabled, and that Steam is not creating a second input device. Test the virtual controller in Windows first, then launch the game with other controller utilities closed.
It works in one game but not another
This normally indicates application support rather than a Windows driver failure. Identify whether the affected game is running through Steam, expects XInput, or supports PlayStation controllers directly before changing drivers.

A controller sold as “PS4-compatible” may not identify itself like an official DUALSHOCK 4. Unsupported or counterfeit devices may not work with the same Bluetooth, HID, or DS4Windows paths. Test the device independently rather than assuming every controller marketed for PS4 behaves identically.
USB, Bluetooth, or an adapter?

Sony documents the dedicated wireless adaptor, but its current retail availability should be checked before treating it as a practical replacement for built-in Bluetooth. Do not buy an adapter to solve a controller that already fails over USB because of a bad cable or hardware fault.
When the hardware may be faulty
Suspect hardware only after cross-testing:
- Try at least two known-good data cables.
- Try more than one direct USB port.
- Test the controller on another Windows PC if available.
- Test another controller on the same PC.
- Test another Bluetooth device with the PC’s adapter.
- Check whether the controller works through its normal PS4 connection.
If another controller works on the PC but this one fails over multiple cables and connection methods, the DUALSHOCK 4’s USB socket, Bluetooth hardware, battery, or internal electronics may be defective. If several Bluetooth devices fail but USB works, investigate the PC’s Bluetooth adapter or driver. If USB fails while Bluetooth works, focus on the cable, USB socket, and USB device path.
