Windows 8 Metro (Windows Store) app packages are normally installed in %ProgramFiles%WindowsApps, which is usually C:Program FilesWindowsApps. The folder is hidden, protected, and treated as read-only after deployment, so it is not an ordinary program directory to modify. Your per-user app data is somewhere else: %LOCALAPPDATA%Packages<app_package_family_name>. That second location contains the app’s local files, roaming data, temporary data, and settings. Knowing which location you need prevents a common mistake: changing an installed package when you actually wanted to find a save, configuration file, or other user-created data.
Where are Windows 8 Metro apps installed?
On Windows 8, the default installation directory for Store apps is %ProgramFiles%WindowsApps. On a standard installation, expanding the environment variable gives C:Program FilesWindowsApps. Microsoft described this as a common location under Program Files for Windows Store apps added in Windows 8.

The directory contains the deployed package rather than a conventional collection of user-editable application folders. A package can include executable binaries, resource files, and its manifest. Those files belong to the deployed app and are shared as a managed package installation, not as a personal workspace for each user.

Use the Windows 8 path as the default answer for this specific operating system. Later versions of Windows can use another package volume, so a newer PC may not place every packaged app on the C: drive even though the Windows 8 default is shown that way.
How do I open the WindowsApps folder in Windows 8?
You can navigate to the default location directly without guessing the Windows installation drive.

C:Program FilesWindowsApps.
Windows hides and protects this directory. Not seeing it while browsing Program Files does not mean Store apps are installed somewhere else. Entering the path explicitly is the least ambiguous way to test the documented default location.
An access-denied message is expected on many systems. Do not respond by taking ownership, replacing permissions, or deleting files simply to make the directory behave like a normal folder. The operating system deliberately limits changes to deployed package content.
What is inside WindowsApps?
The package directory holds the files Windows deployed for the app itself. Depending on the app, that can include:

- Other read-only files required to launch the package.
Package folders can have names that are difficult to read because they encode package identity, version, architecture, publisher information, or related deployment details. Those names are useful to the operating system but are not a reliable substitute for the friendly name shown on the Start screen.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Windows treats deployed package files as immutable content. Microsoft’s packaged-app documentation says that after deployment, package files are marked read-only and heavily locked down by the operating system. In practice, that means the folder is appropriate for inspection, not for editing an executable, replacing a resource, or storing personal files.
Why can I see WindowsApps but not change its files?
The restriction is intentional. A Store app package is managed as a deployment unit, so allowing arbitrary edits could break its manifest, invalidate resources, interfere with updates, or create a mismatch between what Windows registered and what is on disk.
There are three practical consequences:
- Read access is not guaranteed. Your account may be able to enter the path but still be denied access to individual folders.
- Write access is not a supported maintenance method. Editing or deleting package files can stop an app from launching or leave its registration inconsistent.
- Updates can replace package content. Even an unauthorized change that appears to work may disappear when Windows services update or repair the app.
If your goal is to change a preference, repair a broken installation, or recover a save, use the app’s own settings and Windows’ app-management controls where available. The package directory is the wrong place for those tasks.
Where does Windows 8 Metro app data live?
Per-user data is stored separately under %LOCALAPPDATA%Packages<app_package_family_name>. The final directory is the app’s package family name, not necessarily the short title displayed to users. Each installed package has its own data root, so two apps do not normally share one undifferentiated settings folder.

This separation explains why copying a package folder out of WindowsApps does not copy a user’s saves or preferences. The installed package and the per-user data root have different purposes, permissions, and lifetimes.
What do the subfolders mean?
| Subfolder | Typical role | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
LocalState |
Local app-created files and state | Data kept for the user on that installation, such as app-generated content or local state. |
RoamingState |
Roaming data | State the app designates for roaming rather than strictly local storage. |
TempState |
Temporary data | Scratch files and other data the app can recreate or discard. |
Settings |
Managed settings container | Settings data such as settings.dat, rather than package binaries. |
These names describe the storage areas exposed to packaged apps. An app may not use every area, and the exact files inside them depend on the app’s design. A missing subfolder is therefore not proof that the installation is damaged.
What is the difference between WindowsApps and Packages?
The two paths can look related because both use package identity, but they solve different problems.
| Question | %ProgramFiles%WindowsApps |
%LOCALAPPDATA%Packages<package-family> |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Deployed application package | Per-user application state |
| Typical contents | Binaries, resources, and manifest files | Local, roaming, temporary, and settings data |
| Scope | Managed package location on the package volume | One user’s profile and app-data area |
| Write behavior | Protected and read-only after deployment | Writable through the app’s application-data facilities |
| Best use | Careful inspection of deployed content | Finding or backing up user-created state |
| Lifetime | Tied to the deployed package | Tied to the app’s per-user data and normally removed with app removal unless preserved separately |
For a configuration or saved-state question, start in the package-data root. For a question about executable files or packaged resources, the WindowsApps location is the relevant one, but its protection still applies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow can I identify the right package-data folder?
The directory name beneath Packages is the package family name. It may not match the app’s visible title, so searching only for the friendly name can fail.

- Open File Explorer and enter
%LOCALAPPDATA%Packagesin the address bar. - Look for the directory associated with the app’s package identity. Names are often longer and more structured than the Start-screen name.
- Open that directory and check whether it contains
LocalState,RoamingState,TempState, orSettings. - Use file dates and contents as confirmation, rather than changing files merely because a name looks plausible.
When developing a packaged app, code does not hard-code a random path. It obtains the installed-location object for read-only package content and uses the ApplicationData properties for local, roaming, and temporary folders. That API distinction is the same separation you see in File Explorer.
Can I back up or clear Metro app data safely?
Back up user state from the package-data root, not from WindowsApps. Copying the relevant files from LocalState or another data area preserves a user’s files without attempting to alter protected package content.
- Close the app before copying files so a write is not in progress.
- Prefer a complete copy of the app’s data root when you do not know which files are essential.
- Treat
TempStateas disposable; it is intended for temporary data and may not contain recoverable user work. - Do not assume that copying
Settingsalone reproduces a complete profile; settings and local content are separate areas. - Before uninstalling an app, preserve any files you need. App removal can remove its associated per-user data.
Never use WindowsApps as a backup source for saves or preferences. It contains the app’s deployed code, while the personal state is kept under the profile-specific Packages path.

What should I do if the path is missing or access is denied?
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| The WindowsApps folder is not visible in Program Files. | It is hidden or protected. | Enter %ProgramFiles%WindowsApps directly in File Explorer. |
| File Explorer reports that access is denied. | Package permissions are intentionally restrictive. | Inspect without changing ownership or ACLs; use app-data folders for user files. |
| You cannot find a save in WindowsApps. | Saves belong in per-user package data, not deployed binaries. | Check %LOCALAPPDATA%Packages<package-family>LocalState and the other data areas. |
| The visible app name does not match any folder. | The folder uses a package family name. | Compare the structured directory names and inspect their data subfolders. |
| An app stopped working after files were edited. | Deployed package content may have been altered or removed. | Restore the package through supported Windows app-management or reinstallation procedures instead of manually patching files. |
| The expected C: path is not used on a newer Windows release. | Packaged apps may be deployed to another package volume. | Use that system’s registered package location; do not assume the Windows 8 default applies unchanged. |
Does the location change outside Windows 8?
The Windows 8 documentation establishes C:Program FilesWindowsApps as the normal default. Later packaged-app systems retain the same conceptual split—read-only installed package content versus per-user application data—but can place packages on a different volume. Storage configuration, deployment policy, and the operating-system release can therefore change the physical path.
Use the environment-variable path when working specifically on Windows 8. If you are documenting or troubleshooting a later release, verify the package volume reported by that system rather than copying the Windows 8 path into a blanket rule.

What is the safest rule for working with Metro app folders?
Separate inspection from maintenance. Read-only package files under WindowsApps are operating-system-managed; user-created state under the profile’s Packages directory is the place to look for settings and local content. Back up the latter before removing an app, and leave the former untouched unless a supported repair or deployment tool is handling it.
This distinction also prevents misleading fixes. Changing permissions may expose a folder without solving a launch problem, while deleting a settings file may erase the only copy of a user’s configuration. Identify whether the task concerns code, resources, or personal state before opening either location.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the WindowsApps folder the same as the normal Program Files folder?
It is a protected subfolder beneath the Program Files location, but it is managed differently from ordinary desktop-program directories. Its package files are deployed and locked down by Windows, so conventional installers’ assumptions about editing or replacing files do not apply.
Why does an app’s package-data folder have a long, unfamiliar name?
Windows uses the package family name to keep each packaged app’s identity unambiguous. The family name can encode publisher and package identity details, which is why it may not resemble the app title shown in the Start screen.
Will uninstalling a Windows 8 Store app preserve its settings automatically?
Do not rely on that for data you need. Package-associated user state can be removed when the app is removed, so copy important files from its per-user data root before uninstalling.
Can I move the WindowsApps folder to another drive by dragging it?
No. The directory is part of Windows package deployment and is not a normal movable folder. A different package volume must be selected or configured through supported operating-system deployment mechanisms, not by manually relocating the directory.
