When Windows says a folder is too big, the folder itself is usually not the problem. In the common USB-copy case, one file inside the folder exceeds the destination drive’s limit—most often FAT32’s 4 GiB maximum for an individual file. Other failures that look similar come from a path that is too long or from insufficient free space. Check the destination drive’s file system and free capacity first, then inspect the largest files and the complete path of the item that fails. Choose exFAT for removable storage shared between Windows and macOS, NTFS for Windows-only storage, or shorten overlong paths when the file system already supports large files.
What does “folder is too big” mean in Windows?
Windows does not impose a single maximum combined size on an ordinary folder. A folder can contain many gigabytes—or terabytes—provided the destination volume has enough free space and every individual item, name, and path is allowed. The message usually means that one file inside the folder cannot be created on the destination, not that the folder’s total contents are inherently invalid.

The exact wording varies. You may see “The file is too large for the destination file system,” “File too large for USB,” a copy that stops partway through, or a path-too-long warning. Game installations, mod archives, disc images, video captures, and backup folders often expose the problem because they contain a single multi-gigabyte file buried among many smaller files.
FAT32 is the key distinction: it permits a maximum individual file size of 4 GiB, according to Microsoft’s WinPE documentation. A folder containing a 6 GiB archive will fail on a FAT32 drive even if the drive has hundreds of gigabytes free. exFAT and NTFS support files much larger than that limit, subject to their own volume capacity and operating-system support.

How can I diagnose the error before changing anything?
Identify the destination file system, free space, largest source files, and full path of the item that fails. This sequence avoids reformatting a drive when the real cause is a long name or a nearly full disk.
- Check the destination drive. In File Explorer, right-click the USB drive or other destination, select Properties, and record File system (FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS) and Free space.
- Find unusually large files. Open the source folder, switch to Details view if necessary, and sort by the Size column. Inspect nested folders as well. If any single file is over 4 GiB and the destination is FAT32, that file cannot be copied there.
- Check the failing item’s path. Copy or inspect the complete path, including every parent folder and the file name. A destination formatted as NTFS or exFAT can still reject an item when the path is too long.
- Confirm usable capacity. Free space shown in Properties must cover the files being copied, plus any temporary space required by the application performing the copy. If the drive is nearly full, remove unneeded data and empty the Recycle Bin.
- Repeat with one known file. Copy the largest file by itself to the destination. A single-file test tells you whether the file-system limit is the immediate blocker or whether the failure is specific to a path or another item.
Do not format the drive until you have backed up anything on it. Formatting creates a new file system and can erase existing data.

Change the destination to a file system that supports larger individual files, or place the oversized file on another volume. For general removable storage, exFAT is usually the practical replacement; for Windows-only storage, NTFS is usually the better fit.
Use exFAT for Windows-and-macOS removable storage
SanDisk’s support guidance identifies the “File too large” or “Volume too large” condition on USB flash drives and memory cards and recommends a file system that supports files larger than 4 GB. exFAT provides read/write support on Windows and macOS and is designed for removable media. Compatibility with cameras, consoles, televisions, and other devices still needs to be checked individually.

Use NTFS for Windows computers and Windows-only external drives
NTFS supports much larger files and provides Windows features that exFAT does not. It is the normal choice when the drive will stay with Windows PCs. Some non-Windows devices offer limited or no NTFS write support, so NTFS is less universal for a drive that moves between operating systems.
Reformat the drive safely
- Copy the drive’s contents to another disk or backup location.
- In File Explorer, right-click the destination drive and choose Format.
- Select exFAT for cross-platform removable use or NTFS for Windows-only use. Leave the default allocation-unit setting unless a device’s documentation requires something else.
- Confirm the warning only after verifying the backup, then allow Windows to create the new file system.
- Copy the files again and test the drive on every device that must read it.
Microsoft’s format documentation lists FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS as choices and warns that formatting is destructive. There is no safe formatting shortcut that preserves the existing contents automatically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhich file system should I choose: FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, or cloud storage?
The right choice depends on the devices that must access the data and whether the data is being transported, permanently stored, or synchronized.
| Option | Best when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| FAT32 | Legacy hardware compatibility or a firmware-required boot partition | Maximum individual file size is 4 GiB |
| exFAT | Removable storage shared by Windows and macOS | Fewer file-system features than NTFS; device compatibility still requires checking |
| NTFS | Windows computers and Windows-only external storage | Some non-Windows devices have limited write support |
| Cloud storage or backup | Temporary migration, backup, or sharing without moving a physical drive | Path, synchronization, account, and service limits still apply |
Do not select FAT32 merely because it is familiar. Keep it when a legacy device or boot process specifically requires it, and move large files to an exFAT or NTFS volume instead of trying to force them onto FAT32.

Could a path or file name be too long even when the drive has space?
Yes. Windows File Explorer commonly encounters a 260-character path limit, and an individual file or folder name can be up to 255 characters. The count includes the drive letter, every folder separator, all parent names, and the final file name—not just the visible name of the file you selected.
Microsoft documents cases in which Explorer stops silently, copies only part of a folder, or displays a path-too-long message. A deeply nested game-mod directory can therefore fail on an NTFS or exFAT drive even though the file itself is small and free space is plentiful.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Shorten the path without losing the data
- Rename the deepest folders and files with shorter, descriptive names.
- Move the source folder closer to the drive root—for example, place it directly under the drive rather than inside several nested project or download folders.
- Copy the shortened tree to the destination, then restore a sensible organization after the transfer.
- If renaming is impractical, use a copy utility that explicitly supports long paths. Verify its documentation and results; not every Windows application honors long-path settings.
Enabling a long-path policy alone does not make File Explorer and every application long-path aware. OneDrive and SharePoint also have their own limits: Microsoft describes a 400-character decoded cloud path and a 520-character local synchronization path. A folder that fits on a local disk can still fail when synchronized.
What if the drive simply does not have enough free space?
A capacity error is independent of FAT32’s per-file limit. A 3 GiB file can copy to FAT32 if it fits the file-size rule, but the operation still fails when the destination lacks enough free space for the complete transfer.

- Open Settings > System > Storage to see which categories consume the drive.
- Use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations to remove temporary and unnecessary files.
- Uninstall or move large games and recordings that are no longer needed on that volume.
- Empty the Recycle Bin; deleting files does not release their space until the bin is cleared.
- Recheck the free-space figure in the drive’s Properties before restarting the copy.
If the copy still fails after freeing space, return to the per-file and path checks. A capacity cleanup cannot remove a 4 GiB FAT32 restriction or shorten a 260-character path.
How should I handle Windows installation media with a file over 4 GiB?
Windows installation media is a special case because FAT32 remains common for UEFI boot media. Microsoft documents splitting a Windows image or using separate FAT32 and NTFS partitions when an image file exceeds 4 GB.
This is not the same as reformatting an ordinary game-storage USB drive. Before changing boot media, confirm the computer’s firmware and boot requirements, back up the installer files, and follow the image-creation procedure intended for that installation method. Reformatting or repartitioning without that check can make the device non-bootable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can cloud sync or backup still report a size error?
Cloud services do not remove local file-system and path restrictions. The local sync folder must first create a valid path on your computer, and the service may then apply separate limits to decoded cloud paths, synchronized paths, file names, account storage, or individual-file uploads.

For OneDrive and SharePoint, Microsoft lists a 400-character decoded cloud path and a 520-character local sync path. If synchronization fails, shorten the deepest names and reduce nesting before changing the destination drive. Also check the account’s available storage and whether the service has rejected a particular file type or name.
How can I prevent the error when moving large folders?
- Choose the file system first: exFAT for a removable drive shared with macOS, NTFS for Windows-only storage, and FAT32 only when compatibility or boot requirements justify its 4 GiB file limit.
- Keep working paths short: avoid stacking generic folder names such as project, exports, archive, and final inside one another when the files will later be synchronized or copied.
- Check before starting: compare the destination’s file system and free space with the largest source files.
- Separate boot media from data storage: do not repurpose a UEFI installer drive for a large-file library without confirming that the boot workflow still works.
- Maintain a backup: especially before formatting, repartitioning, or deleting files to make room.
- Verify the result: open several copied files and compare the source and destination folder contents rather than assuming a copy that reached 100 percent is complete.
What is the quickest decision path?
Use this order when you need a fast answer:
- If the destination is FAT32 and any source file is over 4 GiB, use an exFAT or NTFS destination, or reformat after a verified backup.
- If the destination is exFAT or NTFS, inspect the complete path and shorten nested names or move the source closer to the root.
- If no file is oversized and paths are short, check free space in Settings > System > Storage, run Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations, and empty the Recycle Bin.
- If the target is Windows installation media, preserve its FAT32/UEFI requirements and use Microsoft’s documented split-image or dual-partition method.
- If the transfer is synchronized to OneDrive or SharePoint, apply the service’s path and account-storage checks in addition to local Windows checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy a 4 GiB file to FAT32 if the drive has plenty of free space?
No. FAT32’s restriction is on the size of one individual file, so unused capacity elsewhere on the drive does not help. Put that file on exFAT or NTFS, or use a destination that already supports larger files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does zipping a folder always solve the problem?
No. Compression may reduce the size, but it can also leave a single archive larger than the destination’s limit. It also changes how the files are accessed, so treat it as a temporary transfer method rather than a file-system fix.
Why did Windows copy many files and then stop?
The failing item may be later in the folder’s sort order, so earlier files can copy normally before Windows reaches an oversized file or an overlong path. Inspect the item named in the error, then test that file alone on the destination.
Will enabling long paths make every Windows program accept long names?
No. Microsoft notes that the policy does not make File Explorer and every application long-path aware. Shortening names and reducing nesting remains the most broadly compatible solution.
