windows.graphics.printing.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a DLL you should download from a random archive. It belongs to the Windows Runtime printing API and supports Windows applications that use printing features.
The safest repair is to install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by System File Checker. If only one app fails, repair or reinstall that app after checking Windows itself.

Before you start: identify the error
These messages usually indicate that Windows or an application cannot load the component:
- “The program can’t start because Windows.Graphics.Printing.dll is missing.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because Windows.Graphics.Printing.dll was not found.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Windows.Graphics.Printing.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
A crash report can also list Windows.Graphics.Printing.dll as the faulting module. That is different from a missing-file error. The file may exist, but an application may have triggered a crash while using the Windows printing API. Do not assume that copying a replacement DLL will fix that type of problem.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates
Because this is a Windows component, start with Windows Update rather than a third-party DLL download.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Reopen the program that reported the error.
Microsoft maintains the update procedure in its guide to installing Windows updates.
If the program starts normally afterward, the component was probably incomplete, outdated, or damaged and was restored through servicing. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired source. Run them in this order.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application or printing action again.
Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC repair sequence.
Successful results include messages that SFC found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it repaired files, restart before testing. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, skip to the matching installation-source procedure below rather than copying a DLL from another computer.

This verifies the specified file without performing a complete repair. Microsoft documents the targeted SFC verification syntax.
The path must match the affected Windows architecture. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may be handled through the WOW64 file-system layout and may use the 32-bit component location. Do not judge the file only by its size or by a version list found online.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 3: Repair the affected Store or packaged app
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If the error occurs only in one Microsoft Store app, the Windows component may be intact while that app’s package or registration is damaged.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected app.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the app and test it.
If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset. Resetting can remove the app’s local data and settings, so use it after Repair.
For Store apps, open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates or Check for updates, depending on the Store layout. Microsoft explains these options in its guide to getting updates for Store apps and games.
A Microsoft Q&A case involving Snipping Tool listed Windows.Graphics.Printing.dll as the faulting module during a printing crash. That kind of report does not prove that the DLL was absent. If the problem is limited to Snipping Tool or another packaged app, update, repair, reset, or reinstall that app after completing the Windows checks.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall a traditional desktop program
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If a normal desktop application reports the error only when it starts, repair that application from its own installer or Windows settings.
- Close the affected program.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the program’s menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, if available.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s original installer or official distribution channel.
- Test the program before copying any files into its folder.
Do not place a downloaded Windows.Graphics.Printing.dll beside the application executable. A program may be loading the Windows component correctly but failing because its own files, registration, or dependencies are damaged.

If the program is a game, use the launcher’s built-in file verification or repair command. That checks the game installation. It does not replace the Windows component, so run DISM and SFC as well when the error names this DLL.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus quarantine is possible, although there is no basis to treat it as the usual cause for this particular file.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
Windows.Graphics.Printing.dll. - Review the file path, detection name, and action taken.
- Do not restore it merely because the filename looks familiar.
Restore a quarantined file only when you have confirmed that it is a genuine Microsoft-signed system file and the detection is a false positive. If the file was in an application folder rather than a Windows system location, reinstall that application instead.
After handling the detection, run a full scan. If you suspect persistent malware or system damage, use Microsoft Defender Offline, then repeat DISM and SFC. Microsoft describes scan options in its guide to virus and threat protection.
Fix 6: Use the correct architecture and Windows source
Time needed: 30–90 minutes
Windows normally stores native 64-bit components in:
%WINDIR%System32
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit components are handled through:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
This naming can be confusing, but the locations are managed by Windows. Microsoft explains the behavior in its documentation for the WOW64 file-system redirector.
Do not copy a file from another PC, even if both computers appear to run Windows 11 or Windows 10. A different build, edition, architecture, servicing state, or language configuration can produce “not designed to run on Windows” errors or missing entry points.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source with Microsoft’s documented /Source: and /LimitAccess options. The source must match the installed Windows version and architecture. Microsoft’s system-file repair instructions explain this advanced procedure.
If you are not certain that your installation source matches, stop before running a guessed command. An in-place repair installation or Windows recovery option is safer than forcing an arbitrary DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.

Fix 7: Reinstall the printer driver only for print-stack symptoms
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A printer driver can cause printer enumeration failures, print-preview problems, spooler errors, or a device that disappears from Windows. It does not normally restore a missing Windows system DLL.
Use this path when the application opens but printing itself fails:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the affected printer.
- Select Update driver, or choose Uninstall device if the installation is clearly damaged.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the printer manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Add the printer again in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Print a Windows test page.
Do not start with Device Manager when the actual message says the DLL is missing at application launch. Repair Windows first.
Finding the right driver manually can mean checking model numbers, architecture, and several old packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the printer manufacturer’s official driver remains the appropriate fix for a genuine driver problem.
Fix 8: Recover Windows if repair still fails
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the file:
- Review the SFC details in:
%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log
- Retry DISM using a matching Windows installation source.
- If the issue began immediately after a Windows update, review Settings > Windows Update > Update history and consider the available uninstall option.
- If the problem is recent, use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- On supported Windows 11 installations, consider the repair reinstall option through Windows Update when available.
- Back up important files before using any recovery or reinstall option.
Microsoft lists System Restore, repair reinstall, and Windows reinstallation among its Windows recovery options.
If the error follows one user account but disappears in a newly created local account, investigate damaged per-user app registration or profile corruption. If it occurs for every account, continue treating it as a Windows-wide component problem.

Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 Windows.Graphics.Printing.dll
as a general repair. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration routines such as DllRegisterServer; it does not restore missing files or repair the Windows component store. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFAQ
Should I download windows.graphics.printing.dll?
No. There is no official standalone Microsoft download for this component. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a matching installation source, or Windows recovery.
Is this a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
No evidence indicates that it belongs to either runtime. It is part of the Windows Runtime printing API.
Can I copy it from another PC?
No. The other PC may have a different Windows build, architecture, or servicing state. A copied file can create new loader and servicing problems.
Which folder should contain it?
Windows normally manages the native component under %WINDIR%System32; 32-bit components on 64-bit Windows are handled through %WINDIR%SysWOW64. Do not manually move or replace either copy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will reinstalling the printer fix it?
Usually not when the message is a missing-DLL loader error. Driver reinstallation is relevant when printing, enumeration, preview, or the spooler fails after the application has already opened.
What is the safest order?
Install Windows updates, restart, run DISM, run sfc /scannow, and restart again. Then repair the affected app if only one program still fails.
