If Windows says windows.staterepository.dll is missing or was not found, repair Windows’ component store and protected system files rather than downloading a replacement DLL. Restart first, install pending updates, then run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from an elevated Command Prompt and follow it with sfc /scannow. This sequence applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10 and addresses the broader corruption that can produce a missing-DLL message. If the scans cannot repair the file, use their logs to choose a supported repair source, repair installation, or Windows recovery option.
What is windows.staterepository.dll?
windows.staterepository.dll is associated with the Windows State Repository Service, a system component used by Windows to maintain application and system state. Technical service references identify the file under %WinDir%System32windows.staterepository.dll and associate the service with StateRepository, hosted by svchost.exe -k appmodel -p. Those references also list Remote Procedure Call (RPC) as a dependency and report the service on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. They are useful for orientation, but service details can vary by build and are not a Microsoft promise that this DLL alone caused a particular error.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows may show “windows.staterepository.dll is missing,” “windows.staterepository.dll was not found,” or a related “State Repository Service failed to start” message when the file is corrupted, unavailable, or when another Windows component that depends on it is damaged. A missing-DLL dialog therefore does not prove that the file itself is the only problem.
Is a windows.staterepository.dll error dangerous?
The message is a sign that Windows or an application cannot access a file it expects. It can affect app launches, the Start or Settings experience, or services that rely on the State Repository, but the message by itself does not establish malware or a hardware failure. Treat it as a system-integrity problem first and use files from Windows Update or matching official installation media.

Do not delete the remaining DLL, rename system files, or download a copy from a random DLL website. A file from another Windows release can have the wrong version or signature and can make servicing harder. Microsoft’s supported approach is to repair the component store, repair protected files, and escalate through logs and Windows recovery when those operations cannot restore the file.
What should I do before running repair commands?
These short checks can resolve a transient failure and ensure that the repair tools have a current source.
- Save work and restart Windows. A restart completes pending servicing operations and releases files that may be locked.
- Check Windows Update. Open Settings > Windows Update (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (Windows 10), select Check for updates, install what is offered, and restart when requested.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter if the failure began during an update. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run Windows Update. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Record the exact message and Windows build. Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and note the edition and build. This information matters if you later need matching installation media or a same-version file.
If the error still appears, continue with DISM and SFC in that order. Closing an application that triggered the message is fine, but do not stop a servicing command after it has begun unless the console reports an error.
How do I run DISM to repair Windows?
Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) repairs the Windows component store. Microsoft advises running DISM before System File Checker because SFC can use the repaired component store as its source for replacement files.
Run the standard online repair
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- At the administrator prompt, enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and wait for DISM to finish. The percentage may pause for a long time; leave the window open until it reports a completion result.
- Restart Windows after a successful repair, then proceed to SFC. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, use the alternate-source procedure below instead of downloading a DLL.
The /Online switch targets the Windows installation that is currently running. DISM normally obtains repair content through Windows Update, so an offline PC, a damaged update cache, or a blocked update service can prevent the default command from completing.
Use matching installation media when Windows Update cannot supply files
Microsoft documents an alternate source for DISM when the normal source is unavailable. You need a Windows folder from installation media or another appropriate repair source that matches the installed Windows version, edition, language, and architecture as closely as possible. A USB flash drive can store official Windows installation media, but it is only a source of matching files; it does not replace DISM or SFC.
After connecting the media, identify the drive letter and the folder that contains the Windows files. Replace the example path in this command with that folder:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
/LimitAccess tells DISM not to contact Windows Update. An incorrect path, an index that does not match your edition, or media from a different build can produce another source error. If you are unsure that the media matches, stop and obtain media for the same Windows release rather than forcing a cross-version replacement.
How do I run System File Checker after DISM?
Once DISM completes successfully, run SFC from the same elevated Command Prompt. SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces corrupted copies with cached or otherwise available good copies.
- In the administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter and keep the window open until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer, then retry the program or service that displayed the
windows.staterepository.dllmessage.
Running SFC before DISM can leave it without a usable repair source. If you already ran SFC first, run DISM now and then repeat SFC so the second scan can use the repaired component store.
What does each SFC result mean?
| Command-line result | Meaning | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. | SFC found no missing or corrupted protected files in the scan. | Restart and test the affected application or service. If the message remains, investigate update servicing, the State Repository service, and event logs rather than repeatedly replacing files. |
| Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. | SFC replaced the damaged protected files. | Restart Windows and retry the operation that failed. Keep the result for your troubleshooting record. |
| Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. | Some files could not be replaced from the available store. | Review %WinDir%LogsCBSCBS.log, identify the affected files, and use a same-version source, Safe Mode scanning, or Windows recovery as appropriate. |
To open the log, press Win+R, enter %WinDir%LogsCBSCBS.log, and open it with an administrator-capable text editor if Windows asks for permission. Search for entries containing “cannot repair” or the DLL name. CBS.log can be large, so copy only the relevant lines when asking for help; do not replace files merely because a line looks unfamiliar.
What if DISM or SFC still cannot repair the DLL?
Reset update components when the source is unavailable
If DISM repeatedly fails to obtain files through Windows Update, run the Windows Update troubleshooter and follow Microsoft’s documented update-cache reset procedure for your Windows version. Restart after the reset, install pending updates, and run DISM again. A cache reset addresses update delivery; it does not independently repair the protected DLL, so repeat the DISM-then-SFC sequence afterward.
Scan in Safe Mode when a file is locked
If SFC identifies corruption but cannot replace a file during normal startup, try the scan in Safe Mode. Open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now in Windows 10. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, select Safe Mode, open an elevated Command Prompt, and run sfc /scannow again.
Use a known-good same-version file only with clear evidence
Microsoft documents a known-good copy as an escalation option when SFC cannot repair a protected file. The copy must come from the same Windows version and build and should be taken from a trustworthy Windows source. Do not copy a DLL from another computer simply because its filename matches; mismatched servicing metadata or architecture can create additional failures.

Move to repair installation or Reset this PC
If DISM, SFC, and supported source files cannot restore integrity, use a Windows repair installation or Reset this PC. A repair install can preserve personal files and applications when the chosen setup path supports that option; Reset this PC offers choices that can remove applications and, depending on the selection, personal files. Back up important data first, disconnect unnecessary external devices, and read each retention choice before confirming.
Record the exact DISM and SFC messages, the Windows build from winver, and the relevant CBS.log lines before escalating. Those details help distinguish a source mismatch from broader component-store damage.
How can I check whether the State Repository Service is involved?
Open Event Viewer by searching for it from Start, then review Windows Logs > System and Applications and Services Logs around the time of the failure. Look for entries from the Microsoft-Windows-StateRepository provider, service-start failures, and related RPC errors. Event details can confirm timing and dependencies, but they do not by themselves prove that replacing the DLL will solve the problem.
You can also open services.msc and locate State Repository Service. Check whether Windows reports a current status or a specific startup error. Do not change startup type, service permissions, or dependency settings at random; repair Windows files first and use the recorded error code to guide further recovery.

| Option | Repair scope | Source integrity | Risk and reversibility |

| DISM with default source | Windows component store | Windows Update | Built-in and normally reversible; requires a functioning update source. |
DISM with /Source and /LimitAccess |
Windows component store | Matching official installation media or repair folder | Built-in, but a mismatched source can fail or introduce version conflicts. |
| SFC | Protected system files, including files supplied by the component store | Cached or repaired Windows files | Built-in; run after DISM for the supported sequence. |
| Safe Mode SFC | Protected files that may be locked during normal startup | The same Windows repair sources available to SFC | Low risk, but third-party startup software is unavailable temporarily. |
| Known-good same-version file | A specifically identified file that SFC could not replace | Verified Windows source with matching build | Higher risk; use only when logs identify the file and the source is trustworthy. |
| Repair install or Reset this PC | Broad Windows recovery | Official Windows installation or recovery environment | Most disruptive; back up data and review application and file-retention choices. |
What should I avoid when fixing this error?
- Do not use a random DLL download site. The file may be modified, unsigned, from another build, or bundled with unwanted software.
- Do not run
regsvr32on this system DLL as a first response. Registration is not the supported remedy for component-store corruption and can produce a misleading registration error. - Do not delete or rename files in
System32. Removing the visible symptom can prevent Windows from servicing itself. - Do not interrupt DISM or SFC because the percentage pauses. Servicing operations can spend several minutes on one stage.
- Do not force an unrelated Windows image as a repair source. Match the installed release, edition, language, and architecture as closely as possible.
When should I seek additional help?
Escalate when the same error returns after a successful DISM-and-SFC cycle, when DISM repeatedly reports source errors despite matching media, when CBS.log lists many unrelated protected files, or when Windows cannot start normally. Provide the Windows edition and build, the exact dialog text, DISM’s final message, SFC’s result, and relevant Event Viewer or CBS.log entries. Avoid posting personal data contained in logs.

Frequently asked questions
Can I download windows.staterepository.dll from another Windows 10 or 11 PC?
Only a verified, known-good file from the same Windows version and build should even be considered, and Microsoft treats that as an escalation after SFC cannot repair the file. A random copy with the same filename may have different servicing metadata, architecture, or security properties. Use DISM, SFC, and official recovery sources first.
Why does the error return after I restart?
A restart clears temporary locks but does not repair a damaged component store or protected file. If the message returns, capture the exact error code and run the DISM-then-SFC sequence instead of repeatedly rebooting or replacing the DLL manually.

Will repairing Windows remove my games and personal files?
DISM and SFC are in-place scans and do not intentionally uninstall games or delete personal files. A repair installation or Reset this PC has different retention choices, so back up saves and other important data and read the selected option before starting recovery.
What if Windows Update is unavailable on my network?
Use matching official installation media as DISM’s /Source and include /LimitAccess so it does not wait for Windows Update. The media must correspond to your installed release; otherwise obtain a correct source before retrying the command.
