If Windows says windowsudk.shellcommon.dll is missing or cannot be found, repair Windows’ component store rather than downloading a replacement DLL. Verify that the file is loading from a Windows system directory, then run DISM health checks followed by System File Checker from an elevated terminal. If Windows will not boot or Explorer repeatedly crashes, use WinRE, System Restore, offline DISM, or a matching-ISO in-place repair.
This is normally an inbox Windows shell component, not a library you install separately. The safest fix depends on whether Windows still starts, whether the file path and signature are legitimate, and whether you have matching installation media.

What is windowsudk.shellcommon.dll?
windowsudk.shellcommon.dll is identified as a Microsoft Windows DLL associated with the shell. A legitimate copy is normally expected in the Windows system directories represented by %SYSTEM32% and %SYSWOW64%; on a typical installation these are C:WindowsSystem32 and, where applicable, C:WindowsSysWOW64. It is part of Windows itself, not an application plug-in that should be downloaded from a DLL repository.
The distinction matters because the Windows SDK is a separate developer package. Microsoft describes the Windows SDK 10.0.28000 for Windows 11 as containing platform headers, libraries, WinRT metadata and build tools for developing Windows applications. Installing that SDK is not documented as a way to replace an inbox shell component, so it should not be your first response to this error.

In one Microsoft support case, explorer.exe identified C:WindowsSystem32windowsudk.shellcommon.dll as the faulting module and reported exception code 0xc0000005. That pattern can make the desktop, File Explorer or shell restart even when the wording on screen says only that a file is missing.
Why does Windows say the DLL is missing or not found?
The message does not identify one universal cause. Establish the path, Windows build and servicing state before choosing a repair.
Damaged or incomplete Windows components
A failed update, interrupted servicing operation or corruption in the component store can leave Windows unable to supply a valid copy. In the Microsoft support case, the user reported that Windows had recently updated and that System File Checker found corrupt files.
An update or component-store replacement is unavailable
Recovery logs from another Microsoft discussion listed windowsudk.shellcommon.dll among files for which the component store could not find a replacement. In that situation, repeatedly running the same command without a matching source will not create the missing files; you need suitable installation media or another recovery path.
Loading from an unexpected directory
Windows DLL search behavior can be abused by placing a file in a directory that a process searches before the real system directory. A copy in Downloads, a user profile, a temporary folder or an unrelated application’s directory is not normal for this component. HijackLibs’ guidance treats an unexpected path or an unsigned image as suspicious.
A shell crash rather than a simple file absence
Explorer may fail because the module is present but corrupt, incompatible with the current component set or being loaded incorrectly. The event log’s faulting application and module path are more useful than the short pop-up message.
What should I record before changing anything?
Capture the evidence first. It helps you avoid replacing a legitimate file with an unsafe copy and gives you a reference if a repair later needs escalation.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
winver, and record the Windows edition, version and build. The Microsoft case that prompted this guidance reported build10.0.22621.4169; your build may differ. - Open Settings > System > About and note whether the installation is 64-bit, 32-bit or ARM64. Architecture affects which system directory is relevant.
- Write down the complete error text and the program named in it. If the desktop is unstable, open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and inspect the event for the crash. Record the faulting application, exception code and full module path.
- Check whether Windows recently installed an update, driver or shell customisation. A timing relationship is a clue, not proof of the cause.
How do I check whether the DLL path and signature are legitimate?
Do this before copying, deleting or replacing any file.

Check the location
- In File Explorer, browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. On a 64-bit installation, also understand thatC:WindowsSysWOW64is the Windows directory used for many 32-bit system components. - Search for
windowsudk.shellcommon.dll. If the error names a different location, treat that path as significant rather than assuming it is correct. - A file in a download directory, temporary directory, user profile or game folder deserves additional scrutiny. Do not overwrite the file in System32 with a copy from one of those locations.
Check the Microsoft signature
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab when it is available.
- Inspect the signer and signature status. A Microsoft Windows signature is the expected result for the inbox component. An unsigned file, an invalid signature or a signer that does not match Windows should be treated as suspicious.
- If the file is absent, do not download a replacement from an unofficial DLL site. Continue with component repair so Windows can obtain a matching file.
How do I repair windowsudk.shellcommon.dll when Windows still starts?
Use an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal. The sequence below checks the component store, repairs it if necessary, and then checks protected system files.
- Open Start, type
TerminalorCommand Prompt, right-click the result, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run the component-store scan:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthWait for it to finish. Record whether DISM reports corruption.
- Run the quick health check:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealthThis checks whether Windows has already marked the image as corrupted.
- Run the repair operation:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthKeep the terminal open until it reaches completion. Depending on the condition of the image and available sources, this can take substantially longer than the first two commands.
- After DISM completes, run System File Checker:
SFC /ScannowThe command must be entered from an elevated window. Let it reach 100 percent and record the final message.
- Restart Windows, then test the action that produced the error: open File Explorer, sign in, launch the affected game or application, and check whether Explorer still restarts.
Run the commands in this order even if SFC is the first tool you tried. DISM repairs the source Windows uses for protected files; SFC then checks the installed files against that source. Community support guidance presents this as a practical repair attempt, not a guarantee that every crash has the same cause.
How should I interpret the results?
- If DISM reports that the component store was repaired and SFC reports no integrity violations after the restart, test again before making further changes.
- If SFC says it found corruption but could not repair some files, run the DISM repair again only after checking the source problem described below, then repeat SFC once.
- If DISM says source files could not be found, do not keep repeating
/RestoreHealthwithout supplying matching media. - If the commands complete successfully but Explorer still crashes, use the event log’s path and faulting module to decide whether the problem is a shell conflict, a bad load path or a broader Windows failure.
What if DISM cannot find source files?
You need installation media that matches the installed Windows edition, language and architecture closely enough for servicing. A Windows 11 image should not be treated as an interchangeable source for a different edition or an unrelated Windows 10 installation.
- Prepare a matching Windows ISO or installation USB. A USB flash drive is useful for creating recovery or installation media, but its contents must correspond to the installed build family and edition.
- Boot normally if possible and note the drive letter assigned to the mounted ISO or USB. If you are in WinRE, drive letters can change; use the recovery command prompt to identify the Windows and media volumes.
- Determine which image index in
install.wimcorresponds to your edition. Using the wrong index can leave DISM unable to locate the required files. - From an elevated terminal, supply the media source in the form shown by Microsoft recovery guidance, adjusting both drive letters and the image index for your machine:
DISM /image:C: /cleanup-image /restorehealth /source:F:sourcesinstall.wim - When the offline operation finishes, restart into Windows if possible and run
SFC /Scannowagain from an elevated terminal.
The example uses C: for the Windows volume and F: for installation media only as a pattern. In WinRE, Windows may be on another letter, and the media may not be F:. The recovery discussion also records cases where the replacement file was not available in the selected source, so a failed source is evidence to reassess the edition, index and media rather than proof that the DLL itself is unrecoverable.
How do I fix the problem when Explorer or Windows will not start?
Move to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) when normal boot is impossible or Explorer crashes before you can work. Preserve important files before using reset or reinstall options.
Try Startup Repair
- From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. If you cannot reach that screen, interrupt startup several times to make Windows enter recovery automatically.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Allow the process to finish and restart. Startup Repair is an escalation path for boot failures; it does not promise to replace every damaged shell component.
Use System Restore
In Troubleshoot > Advanced options, choose System Restore if a restore point exists from before the error. Select a point based on its date and the update or software change you suspect. Restore points roll system state back; they are not a substitute for backing up personal files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Run offline DISM
Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt, identify the Windows and media drive letters, and use the offline DISM pattern shown earlier. Because WinRE assigns letters differently, verify the location of the Windows directory before running the command.
Perform an in-place repair from a matching ISO
If Windows 11 can start setup, mount a matching ISO and run setup.exe. Choose Keep personal files and applications. This reinstalls Windows components while retaining the installed apps and user files selected by that option. Setup may refuse to continue when the ISO’s edition or language does not match closely enough.

Use Reset this PC only after protecting data
WinRE also offers Reset this PC with an option to retain personal files. Reset is a more disruptive escalation than DISM, SFC or System Restore, so copy documents, browser data and game saves to another drive or a trusted cloud location first and make sure you have installers or account access for applications that may need to be restored.
Which repair option should I choose?
Use the least disruptive option that matches your boot state and available sources. The table compares the practical choices described by Microsoft support guidance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Option | Can Windows boot? | Needs internet or matching media | Primary effect | Impact on installed apps and settings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DISM online plus SFC | Yes | DISM may need a valid repair source; matching media can be supplied when the source is unavailable | Repairs the component store and checks protected system files | Designed to preserve the existing installation |
| Clean boot | Usually yes | No installation media; used as a diagnostic | Temporarily starts Windows with nonessential startup services disabled to isolate a conflict | Does not reinstall Windows components |
| Startup Repair | No or unreliable | Uses WinRE | Attempts automated startup recovery | Does not intentionally remove personal files |
| System Restore | No or unreliable | Requires an available restore point | Rolls system state back to an earlier point | Personal files are not the target of the rollback, but recently installed software or drivers can be affected |
| Offline DISM | No | Matching installation media is normally required when the local source is incomplete | Repairs an offline Windows image | Targets Windows components rather than user applications |
| In-place repair | Setup must start | Matching Windows ISO | Reinstalls Windows components over the existing installation | The Keep personal files and applications choice is intended to retain both |
| Reset this PC | No or unreliable | Uses WinRE recovery sources | Reinstalls Windows as a last-resort recovery step | Use the retain-personal-files choice, but expect to restore applications and review settings |
Can a clean boot identify a conflicting program?
Yes. If the DLL error appears only after third-party startup software loads, a clean boot can show whether a service or startup item is involved.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
msconfig, and open System Configuration. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining third-party services for the test.
- Open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and reproduce the error. If it disappears, re-enable items in groups until the conflicting service or application is identified.
- Return to normal startup after testing. A clean boot is an isolation method, not a permanent repair for a damaged Windows component.
Should I install the Windows SDK to fix this DLL?
No. The Windows SDK is for developers and includes headers, libraries, WinRT metadata and build tools. Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 21H2 or later and Windows 10 version 1507 or later among supported operating systems for the SDK, while noting that not all tools work on earlier systems. Those compatibility statements describe developer tooling, not a replacement procedure for an inbox shell DLL.
If you need the SDK for development, install the version appropriate for your project separately. For this error, prioritize Windows Update, DISM and SFC, WinRE recovery, System Restore or an in-place repair using matching media.
What should I never do with this file?
- Do not download an isolated
windowsudk.shellcommon.dllfrom an unofficial DLL site. - Do not copy a file from another computer, a game directory or a random archive over the copy in System32 or SysWOW64.
- Do not delete a suspicious copy until you have recorded its path and signature and preserved any evidence needed to diagnose a possible unsafe load.
- Do not run
regsvr32as a guess. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish manual registration as a fix for this component. - Do not assume that an unsigned file is safe simply because its name matches the Windows file; verify the signer and let Windows servicing restore the correct component.
How do I verify the repair?
After restarting, repeat the action that originally failed and watch for the same module path in Event Viewer. Open File Explorer, sign in and launch the affected application or game. If the message returns, record the new build, event details and path before trying another escalation; a persistent crash can indicate a broader servicing problem or a third-party conflict rather than one missing file.
Keep the installation media used for a successful offline repair and note the DISM and SFC completion messages. If you ultimately choose Reset this PC or another reinstall path, confirm that personal files and game saves are backed up and that you can reinstall applications before proceeding.

Will this repair fix a game that fails to launch?
It can help when the launcher or desktop fails because Explorer or a Windows shell component is damaged. If Windows is healthy and only one game reports a different missing file, use that game’s official repair or reinstall process instead of substituting this DLL.

System Restore targets system state, drivers and installed software changes rather than ordinary personal documents. Back up game saves and other important data anyway, because save locations and cloud-sync behavior differ by game and account.
Why do the drive letters change in WinRE?
WinRE assigns letters according to the recovery environment, not necessarily the letters you see during normal Windows operation. Confirm which volume contains the Windows folder and which contains sourcesinstall.wim before running offline DISM.
What if the file is signed but Explorer still crashes?
A valid signature proves the file is signed, not that every surrounding Windows component or shell extension is healthy. Use the event log to check the faulting process and path, test with a clean boot, and continue with the recovery options that match your boot state.
