wke.dll is an application file used by WKE, also called WebKit Embedded, and is not a normal Windows system component. The safest fix for a wke.dll missing, not found, or could not be loaded error is to identify the program that needs it and repair or reinstall that program from its official source.
What this file actually does
WKE is an embedded WebKit browser engine for Windows desktop applications. Software can bundle it to display web-based interfaces or browser content inside an application or game.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That makes wke.dll application middleware, not a Windows runtime that should be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The filename alone cannot identify the exact program on your computer because different applications may bundle, modify, or load WKE.
The WKE project is also based on an old WebKit codebase. A file that exists on one computer may not match the version, architecture, or supporting libraries required by another application.

Causes of common wke.dll errors
| Error or symptom | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “wke.dll is missing from your computer” | The parent program was incompletely installed, updated, or cleaned | Repair or reinstall that program |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because wke.dll was not found” | The file is absent from the application folder or was quarantined | Check the application folder and antivirus history |
| “The specified module could not be found” | wke.dll or one of its dependent DLLs is missing |
Repair the app, then check its required runtime |
| “There was a problem starting wke.dll” | Wrong, damaged, or incompatible file | Restore the exact copy from the application installer |
| “wke.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error” | Corrupt, incompatible, incomplete, or suspicious binary | Remove the replacement and reinstall the parent app |
| The error started after an antivirus alert | Defender or another security product quarantined the file | Inspect Protection history before restoring anything |
| The file exists but the program still fails | A dependency is missing, or the file has the wrong architecture | Check the app’s runtime requirements and architecture |
Fix wke.dll errors in the right order
1. Identify the program that owns wke.dll
Do not begin by searching for a replacement DLL. First determine which application is failing.
Use these clues:
- Read the title bar of the error dialog.
- Check the shortcut you used to start the program.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Note the executable name and its installation folder.
- If the error appears during startup, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the Details tab, and look for the program that launches just before the error.
You can also search for the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
wke.dll. - Right-click a result and choose Open file location.
- Record the folder and the nearby executable files.
A legitimate application copy will normally be in or near the program’s own installation folder. The exact path can vary, so do not assume that every copy belongs in a Windows system directory.
If you find copies in temporary folders, a user-writable download folder, or an unrelated directory with a suspicious executable, do not run or whitelist them yet. A known malware campaign used a malicious file named wke.dll for DLL side-loading, so the filename by itself does not prove that a file is safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Use the application’s repair or verification feature
Many launchers can restore missing files without removing your settings.
Look in the affected program’s launcher for one of these commands:
- Repair
- Verify
- Verify integrity of game files
- Scan and repair
- Check for updates
- Reinstall
The exact clicks depend on the application:
- Close the failing program.
- Open its official launcher.
- Open the program’s menu, settings, or library entry.
- Select the repair or verification command.
- Let the process finish.
- Restart Windows if the launcher requests it.
- Start the program again from its normal shortcut.
A successful repair restores the matching wke.dll and any related files to the application directory. If verification reports that files were replaced but the error remains, continue with the runtime and security checks below rather than copying another DLL over the restored one.
3. Reinstall the parent application
If there is no repair option, perform a clean reinstall using the application’s official installer or original installation media.

- Press
Windows+Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the program that produced the error.
- Select its three-dot menu, then choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer if Windows asks.
- Download the installer from the application’s official publisher or reopen the trusted launcher.
- Install the application again.
- Start it and check whether the error has disappeared.
If the uninstaller leaves the old program folder behind, do not delete it immediately if it contains saved games, profiles, or configuration files. Back up personal data first. A remaining folder may also reveal whether the original wke.dll was removed or whether another dependency is missing.
Reinstalling the parent application is the definitive fix when its private copy of wke.dll is damaged or absent. Do not install a DLL from a random download page and place it beside the executable. That can introduce malware, select the wrong version, or leave the real dependency problem untouched.
4. Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may remove a file after an update, a false positive, or a genuine detection.
In Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Expand detections related to the affected program.
- Compare the recorded path with the application folder you identified.
- Check the detection name and file location before taking action.
Do not restore or allow the file merely because the application needs it. Restore it only when the parent application is trusted and you can verify that the file came from its official installer or a known-good application repair. Microsoft warns that restoring a valid detection can expose the device.

The safer approach is usually to reinstall the application after confirming that the installer is legitimate. If the security product quarantines the freshly installed file again, leave it isolated and contact the application publisher rather than creating an exclusion.
5. Install the Visual C++ runtime only when the app requires it
A message saying “specified module could not be found” can mean that wke.dll exists but one of its dependent libraries does not. Some WKE builds may require Microsoft Visual C++ runtime libraries, but the filename alone does not prove that this is the cause.
Check the application’s installer, support documentation, event logs, or a trusted dependency diagnostic before installing runtimes.

When the application specifies Visual C++:
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ downloads.
- Choose the package architecture required by the application.
- Download the installer from Microsoft.
- Run it and select Repair if that option appears.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the application again.
The package must match the application, not just the operating system. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows normally needs the x86 package. A 64-bit application normally needs x64. Both can legitimately be installed on the same 64-bit computer.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Some older applications were built with older Visual C++ toolsets. Install an older redistributable only if the application vendor specifically requires it, and obtain it from Microsoft rather than a third-party DLL site.
6. Check the application architecture and file location
A 32-bit application cannot use an arbitrary 64-bit replacement, and a 64-bit application may reject an incompatible 32-bit binary. The correct file is the one supplied with the application build you installed.
To check the program’s architecture, inspect the application’s documentation or installer, or ask its publisher. Do not infer the application architecture only from whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Also confirm that the file is located where the application expects it. Windows commonly searches the application directory when resolving a private DLL. Moving wke.dll to System32, SysWOW64, or another shared folder can create version collisions and does not solve a missing dependency.

Drivers are not normally the direct home of wke.dll, but outdated graphics, chipset, or device drivers can cause an application with embedded browser content to fail later in its startup process. Use the hardware manufacturer or computer manufacturer first.
To check drivers manually:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and version.
- Use Update Driver only when Windows or the hardware manufacturer provides a suitable update.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not use Device Manager to replace wke.dll; it cannot repair an application-private file.
Manually hunting through hardware pages and comparing driver versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are outdated in its free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for its own wke.dll.
8. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
System repair is secondary because wke.dll is normally supplied by an application, not Windows. Use these commands when other Windows components are also failing, applications crash broadly, or system corruption is suspected.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party application’s private wke.dll.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is an incomplete application installation. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair features are handled by the full version; for a file owned by a specific app, repairing or reinstalling that app remains the definitive fix.
9. Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after an update, cleanup operation, driver installation, or software removal, System Restore may reverse the change.
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a proper application reinstall, and it may not be available or may not contain a suitable restore point. Back up important work before proceeding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run regsvr32 wke.dll as a general repair step. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry such as DllRegisterServer; an ordinary embedded browser runtime does not become installed merely because it is registered.

If the command reports that an entry point is missing, that does not prove the file is broken. It usually means the DLL was never designed for self-registration. Restore it through the parent application instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is wke.dll part of Windows?
No confirmed evidence indicates that wke.dll ships as a standard Windows component. It is associated with third-party software using WKE or WebKit Embedded.
Which program requested wke.dll?
The filename cannot identify the exact program. Use the error title, shortcut target, running executable, and the folder containing the file. The application that installed it is the program you need to repair.
Should I download wke.dll separately?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible build. Use the application’s official installer, launcher verification, or original media.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Keep the file in the application directory unless the application’s official instructions specify another location.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does the error remain when wke.dll is already present?
The file may be corrupted, incompatible, or blocked by security software. A dependent DLL may also be missing. Repair the application and verify the required Visual C++ architecture instead of replacing the file blindly.
Can SFC fix wke.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while wke.dll normally belongs to a third-party application.
What if the file appears in a suspicious folder?
Do not whitelist it based only on its filename. Scan the file and system, inspect its path and publisher information, and reinstall the affected application from a trusted source. If the problem persists, give the application vendor the executable name, full error text, file path, Windows edition, architecture, and security-product history.
