“wls0wndh.dll was not found,” “wls0wndh.dll is missing,” and “the specified module could not be found” usually indicate a damaged or missing Windows component. wls0wndh.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows DLL described as the “Session 0 Viewer Window Hook DLL,” not a normal game, application, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET assembly.

The safest repair is to restore Windows components with DISM and System File Checker. Do not download a replacement copy from a random DLL website.

Which fix applies to you

Use the branch that matches what you see:

  • The error appears during startup or while Windows services run: install updates, then run DISM and SFC.
  • Windows Security or another antivirus quarantined the file: inspect quarantine and restore it only if the file is verified as Microsoft-signed.
  • The file exists outside a Windows directory or has no Microsoft signature: treat it as suspicious and scan for malware.
  • spoolsv.exe or “Spooler SubSystem App” crashes: repair Windows, then investigate printer drivers and spooler extensions.
  • SFC cannot repair the file: run DISM with a matching repair source, then retry SFC.
  • Windows will not boot: use Windows Recovery Environment for offline repair or System Restore.
  • The problem began after a driver, update, or software change: try System Restore before considering an in-place repair.

What wls0wndh.dll does

wls0wndh.dll is associated with Session 0 isolation, a Windows security design that separates services from the interactive desktop. Older Windows versions used the Interactive Services Detection and UI0Detect mechanism to detect user-interface activity created by services in Session 0.

Technical documentation identifies wininit.exe as the component that loads the DLL and registers its Session0ViewerWindowProcHook function. This is an internal Windows implementation detail. Applications should not normally load, register, or replace this file themselves.

The component is documented in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and some Windows 10-era file inventories. Those public records are not a complete Microsoft compatibility list, so do not assume that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation contains the same file.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Public Microsoft-signed records show a 32-bit copy under SysWOW64, but the expected location depends on the Windows build and architecture.

Check the path and Microsoft signature

Before repairing or restoring anything, determine whether the file is genuine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Check likely Windows locations:
  3. C:WindowsSystem32
  4. C:WindowsSysWOW64
  5. If you find wls0wndh.dll, right-click it and select Properties.
  6. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  7. Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
  8. Confirm that Windows reports that the digital signature is valid.
  9. Open the Details tab and review the file description and company information.

A file under a Windows directory with a valid Microsoft signature is consistent with the genuine component. A copy in a game folder, download folder, temporary directory, or an application’s private folder deserves further investigation. Do not delete a suspicious file before recording its location and scanning the computer.

A path check alone is not proof of safety. Malware can use a legitimate filename, so inspect the signature and run a security scan.

Fix 1: Install updates, then repair Windows

This is the correct first repair when the error appears during startup, service activity, or after file corruption.

Install pending updates

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.

After restarting, test the action that produced the error. If it remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test again.

Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as its repair source.

If SFC reports that it repaired corrupt files, restart and retest. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, the missing-file message may involve a dependency, a quarantine event, or broader system damage rather than a currently corrupt copy of wls0wndh.dll.

Repeating SFC without checking what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of detected Windows issues, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and DISM/SFC remain the built-in repair path.

Fix 2: Repair from a matching Windows source

If DISM cannot complete or SFC says it cannot repair the file, use a valid Windows installation source rather than a downloaded DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, run Windows Update again and restart. Then obtain matching Windows installation media from Microsoft and identify its repair folder. The source must match the installed Windows edition, architecture, and servicing level closely enough for DISM to use it.

An example command is:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

C:RepairSourceWindows is only an example. Replace it with the Windows folder from your matching repair source.

After DISM finishes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart and test. If the repair still fails, open:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

The log can identify files SFC could not repair. On a managed computer, preserve the log for your administrator rather than manually replacing protected files.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows file after a false detection, or it can remove a file that was actually modified by malware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving wls0wndh.dll.
  5. Review the detected path, threat name, and action taken.
  6. If the file is in a normal Windows directory and its Microsoft signature is valid, use the security product’s controlled Restore or Allow on device action.
  7. Run a full scan after restoration.
  8. Run DISM and SFC again.

Do not disable antivirus protection merely to obtain a replacement DLL. If the file was found outside a Windows directory or its signature is invalid, leave it quarantined and investigate the system for malware.

Fix 4: Investigate a spoolsv.exe crash

A crash report may name wls0wndh.dll as the faulting module, but that does not prove the DLL caused the crash.

A documented Windows Vista-era incident involved spoolsv.exe, the Print Spooler process, stopping with wls0wndh.dll listed as the fault module. Printer drivers, spooler extensions, a damaged Windows component, or an interaction with Session 0 code can all be relevant.

Use this order:

  1. Run the DISM and SFC procedure above.
  2. Open Settings and go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
  3. Remove printers that were recently installed or are no longer used.
  4. Visit the printer manufacturer’s official support page and obtain a driver matching the printer and Windows architecture.
  5. Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager.
  6. Expand Print queues and Printers.
  7. Right-click the affected printer, select Uninstall device, and restart if prompted.
  8. Install the correct driver from the manufacturer.
  9. Test printing with a simple document.

Do not install a driver update solely because the crash report names wls0wndh.dll. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while the full version performs driver installation; it is optional, and printer-manufacturer drivers remain the preferred source when the affected device is known.

Fix 5: Use System Restore

System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a Windows update, driver installation, printer change, or system-level software installation.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe and press Enter.
  3. Select Next.
  4. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs to review expected changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while generally preserving personal files. It does not replace a backup, so do not treat it as a substitute for protecting important data.

Fix 6: Repair Windows when it will not boot

If Windows cannot start normally:

  1. Turn on the computer and allow Windows to enter recovery after failed starts, or boot from official Windows installation media.
  2. Select Troubleshoot.
  3. Open Advanced options.
  4. Try Startup Repair first.
  5. If that fails, select System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
  6. Use Command Prompt for offline SFC and DISM repair when you have identified the correct Windows drive letter.

Drive letters can change in recovery. Use dir C:Windows, dir D:Windows, and similar commands to locate the actual Windows folder before running offline commands.

Persistent corruption may require an in-place repair or reinstall. Resetting or clean-installing Windows can remove applications and, depending on the option selected, personal data. Back up important files and choose the recovery option deliberately.

Why you should not download or register the DLL

Do not download wls0wndh.dll from a DLL archive and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, a printer folder, or an application directory. A downloaded file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or lack the signature and servicing metadata Windows expects. It may also hide the real cause of the failure.

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It applies to self-registering COM or ActiveX components that expose DllRegisterServer. Public metadata for wls0wndh.dll identifies the Session 0 hook export, not DllRegisterServer, so registering this file is not an appropriate repair.

The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component servicing, matching Microsoft installation media, System Restore, and Windows recovery. Manual copying is only an advanced offline procedure using a known-good file from matching Microsoft media or servicing.

FAQ

Is wls0wndh.dll a genuine Windows file?

Yes. A copy in a Windows directory with a valid Microsoft signature is consistent with the genuine Microsoft Windows component. Verify the path and signature rather than trusting the filename alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does it belong in System32 or SysWOW64?

The expected location depends on Windows architecture and build. On 64-bit Windows, native 64-bit binaries generally use System32, while 32-bit system binaries use SysWOW64. Do not move a copy between these folders manually.

Is it a Windows 10 or Windows 11 file?

Public inventories document the component across older Windows releases and some Windows 10-era builds. They do not establish that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation includes it. Use the installed system’s signature, servicing state, and error context.

Could a missing dependency cause this message?

Yes. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency required during loading, not necessarily the named DLL itself. DISM, SFC, event logs, and the application or service that reported the error help distinguish these cases.

What if SFC cannot repair it?

Run DISM again, use a matching repair source, then run SFC a second time. If Windows remains unstable, use System Restore, offline recovery, or an in-place repair.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not for this file based solely on a generic DLL message. wls0wndh.dll is a Windows system hook component, and there is no verified evidence that those redistributables are its normal fix.

When should I suspect malware?

Suspect tampering when the file is outside a Windows directory, lacks a valid Microsoft signature, has unexpected metadata, or reappears after removal. Leave suspicious files isolated, run an offline or full security scan, and repair Windows through DISM and SFC.
