“Windows Live Photo Gallery encountered an error loading WLXPhotoLibraryMain.dll and can’t start.” You may also see “The program can’t start because WLXPhotoLibraryMain.dll is missing from your computer,” “The specified module could not be found,” or error 0x800736b1 or 0x8007007e.
The 60-second answer
wlxphotolibrarymain.dll is an application file used by Microsoft Windows Live Photo Gallery, which was distributed through Windows Essentials 2012. It is not a general Windows system DLL, a Visual C++ runtime, or a file that should normally be copied into System32.

The safest repair is to repair the existing Windows Essentials installation:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select Windows Essentials 2012 or Windows Live Essentials.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair all Windows Live programs.
- Restart Windows and try Photo Gallery again.
Microsoft discontinued Windows Essentials 2012 on January 10, 2017, and no longer provides it as an official download. If repair is unavailable, use your original trusted installer or installation media. If you do not have one, migrating to Microsoft Photos or another maintained photo manager is safer than downloading an isolated DLL. Microsoft explains the product’s retirement and download status on its Windows Essentials support page.

What this DLL belongs to
Windows Live Photo Gallery is the older Microsoft photo organizer, not the current Microsoft Photos app included with recent Windows releases. The file belongs to the old Photo Gallery program directory, normally under the Windows Live or Windows Essentials installation path.
Public file indexes identify it as a 32-bit application DLL. They list versions including 16.4.3505.912 and 16.4.3528.331, with one commonly listed size around 3.31 MB. Those details are useful for comparison, but Microsoft does not publish a current authoritative metadata page for this DLL.
A 32-bit application uses 32-bit program components even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. That does not mean the file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Its correct location is beside the application that installed it.

The phrase “specified module could not be found” does not prove that wlxphotolibrarymain.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting a missing dependency needed by that DLL.
Fix 1: Repair Windows Live Photo Gallery
This is the first repair to try when Windows Essentials still appears in installed programs.
- Close Photo Gallery and any other Windows Live applications.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl, then press Enter. - Find Windows Essentials 2012 or Windows Live Essentials.
- Right-click it and choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair all Windows Live programs.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Photo Gallery again.
If the repair completes and Photo Gallery starts, the installation was damaged or incomplete. If the repair option is missing, the installation database may be damaged, or only part of the suite remains installed.
Before uninstalling anything, preserve your Photo Gallery library and metadata. Your photo files and Photo Gallery catalog data are separate from the DLL. Copy your photo folders and any Photo Gallery library or catalog folders you rely on to another drive before choosing a full removal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf repair fails, return to Programs and Features, choose Uninstall/Change again, and remove Windows Essentials only if you have the original trusted installer or installation media available. Do not assume Microsoft currently offers a replacement installer.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined the DLL, especially if the error appeared suddenly after a scan.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving Photo Gallery, Windows Essentials, or
wlxphotolibrarymain.dll. - Review the file path and detection details.
Only restore the file if it is inside the genuine existing Photo Gallery installation and your security product identifies it as safe. If the file came from a random download, do not restore it. Reinstall the complete application from trusted Microsoft installation media instead.
After restoring a quarantined file, restart Windows and test Photo Gallery. If the antivirus removes it again, do not keep forcing the restore. Treat that as a reason to verify the installation and consult the security product’s detection details.
Fix 3: Install Media Feature Pack on Windows N
Windows N editions omit certain media technologies. That can prevent older multimedia applications from loading correctly and is particularly relevant to 0x8007007e reports.
First check your edition:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Look at Windows specifications and confirm whether the edition ends in N.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Find Media Feature Pack.
- Install it.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Find Media Feature Pack.
- Install it.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft maintains the current Windows N instructions on its Media Feature Pack page. After restarting, run the Windows Essentials repair again if Photo Gallery still does not start.
The Media Feature Pack is relevant to Windows N, but it is not a universal explanation for every wlxphotolibrarymain.dll failure.
Fix 4: Reinstall from trusted original media
If the DLL is missing and repair cannot restore it, reinstall the complete Windows Essentials installation rather than replacing one file.
Use only:
- The original installer you previously downloaded from Microsoft
- Installation media supplied by your organization
- A known-good backup of the original installer
Before reinstalling:
- Back up your photo folders.
- Preserve Photo Gallery catalog or library data.
- Note any Windows Live applications you still use.
- Create a restore point if System Protection is enabled.
- Remove the damaged Windows Essentials installation through Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the trusted installer.
- Select Photo Gallery when prompted.
- Restart again and test the application.
Do not present third-party mirrors as official Microsoft downloads. Microsoft’s current position is that Windows Essentials 2012 is discontinued and unavailable for fresh official download.

Do not download the DLL by itself
Random DLL download pages are the wrong repair for this problem. The file may contain malware, belong to a different Photo Gallery build, have the wrong architecture, or simply fail because another dependency is missing.
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create version conflicts and does not repair the Windows Essentials installation. A 32-bit application DLL should remain with its owning 32-bit application.
The safe sources are an existing genuine Windows Essentials installation, your original trusted Microsoft installer, or a maintained replacement application. If neither the installer nor a usable installation remains, migration is usually the practical end state.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL installer
regsvr32 is for DLLs and ActiveX controls that expose the registration functions it expects. It is not a general command for installing or repairing every DLL.
Do not run:
regsvr32 wlxphotolibrarymain.dll
unless documentation for the specific application confirms that this file is a self-registering component. Photo Gallery repair does not normally require manually registering this application DLL. Microsoft explains the limited purpose of DLL registration tools in its regsvr32 guidance.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They normally do not recreate a missing third-party Windows Essentials DLL, so use them as secondary checks rather than the main Photo Gallery fix.
Run Windows Update first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Install available updates.
- Restart if requested.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Microsoft documents this order in its DISM and SFC troubleshooting guidance.

If you prefer help identifying whether Windows components are damaged instead of manually interpreting repeated command output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is not required, and reinstalling Windows Essentials remains the definitive fix for a damaged Photo Gallery installation.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when other symptoms point there
A display or media driver is not the normal first suspect for a missing Photo Gallery DLL. Consider driver work only if the failure began after an operating system upgrade and other media or graphics applications are also crashing.
To check a driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics device.
- Select Properties and review the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
You can also check Sound, video and game controllers for related media devices. Do not remove a driver blindly. If the problem started immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if available.
If manually matching graphics and media driver versions is the part slowing you down, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Driver work is secondary here, and it does not replace repairing the application that owns wlxphotolibrarymain.dll.
If the file exists but Photo Gallery still fails
Open the Photo Gallery installation folder and confirm that the file is present. Then check:
- Whether antivirus software has recently blocked another file in the same folder
- Whether the application path points to the installation you repaired
- Whether Event Viewer reports a different missing module
- Whether Movie Maker or other Windows Essentials applications fail too
- Whether the failure began immediately after an operating system upgrade
If the file exists but the error continues, reinstall the complete parent application. Do not replace only the named DLL. A dependency problem can remain even when the file itself is present.
System Restore is reasonable only when the failure began after a known system change and a suitable restore point exists:

- Review the affected programs and complete the wizard.
System Restore is not a first-line substitute for application repair.
Is continuing to use Photo Gallery practical
Windows Live Photo Gallery is obsolete and unsupported. It may continue to work on some Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations, but repair options become harder when the original installer is unavailable and operating system components change.
If you cannot repair the existing installation from trusted media, move your photos and metadata to Microsoft Photos or another maintained photo manager. Do not spend hours rebuilding an unsupported application from isolated DLL files.

FAQ
Is wlxphotolibrarymain.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an application DLL associated with Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Essentials 2012. It should normally remain in the Photo Gallery program directory.
Is it safe to copy the file into System32?
No. That is not the correct default repair and can create conflicts. Repair the complete Windows Essentials installation instead.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?
There is no verified evidence that this DLL is itself a Visual C++ runtime. Do not install unrelated redistributables merely because a DLL website recommends them. Repair Photo Gallery and check its actual missing dependencies first.
What does 0x800736b1 mean?
It indicates a component or loading problem, but it does not establish one universal cause. Repairing Windows Essentials is the evidence-based first step.
What does 0x8007007e mean?
It generally means a required module could not be found. On Windows N, install the matching Media Feature Pack, then repair Photo Gallery if necessary.
Recommended Free Tools
Will SFC restore this DLL?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while wlxphotolibrarymain.dll belongs to an older application. Use SFC and DISM only as secondary Windows-integrity checks.
Should I use the modern Photos app instead?
If Windows Essentials cannot be repaired from trusted original media, yes. Migrating away from unsupported Photo Gallery is safer than sourcing an isolated DLL from an unknown download page.
