Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching path:
- The file is missing from System32 or SysWOW64: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- The problem started after Windows Update: install pending updates, restart, then repeat the repair commands.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: verify its location and Microsoft signature before restoring it.
- The file exists, but Work Folders fails: inspect the
workfolderssvcservice and contact company IT if the device is managed. - Only one game or application shows the error: repair or reinstall that application, but do not assume it owns the DLL.
- The error says the file is not designed to run on Windows: suspect corruption, an architecture mismatch, or malware. Do not register the file with
regsvr32.
What is workfolderssvc.dll
workfolderssvc.dll is the service DLL for Microsoft Work Folders, a Windows feature that synchronizes files between a Windows device and an organization’s file server. Microsoft identifies the related service as workfolderssvc. Microsoft describes the Work Folders service
Work Folders is integrated with Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its normal user folder is:
C:Users<username>Work Folders
The file is not a Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX library, .NET component, game middleware file, or ordinary application dependency. A program can display the error because Windows is trying to start a related service or because an installer is checking a Windows component. That does not prove the program shipped the DLL.

A legitimate copy is normally protected by Windows and located in:
%windir%System32workfolderssvc.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the normal location for 64-bit system files. The 32-bit system-file location is normally:
%windir%SysWOW64workfolderssvc.dll
Windows uses file-system redirection to keep 32-bit and 64-bit components separate. Microsoft explains the System32 and SysWOW64 distinction
Historical Windows packages contain different builds. Examples include 64-bit versions 10.0.18362.778 and 10.0.18362.1, plus a 32-bit 6.3.9600.16441. These are examples, not a complete list or a current universal version.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 1: Repair Windows component files
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing, corrupted, or reported as “not designed to run on Windows.”
1. Install updates first
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- On Windows 11, open Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
Then repair the component store.
2. Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. It may pause at a percentage for several minutes. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Restart Windows and try the affected program or Work Folders again.
A message saying SFC found and repaired corrupted files means the repair worked at the file level. If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, use matching official Windows installation media as a repair source rather than downloading the DLL separately. Microsoft’s DISM guidance covers repair sources
Repeating DISM and SFC manually can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the damaged Windows components so you are not guessing through repeated repairs; its free scan shows what is wrong, while repair requires the full version.
3. Verify the file directly
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
dir "%windir%System32workfolderssvc.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64workfolderssvc.dll"
sfc /verifyfile=%windir%System32workfolderssvc.dll
The dir commands show whether each path contains the file. The second path may be absent on 32-bit Windows, so that alone is not an error.
The verification command checks the 64-bit path without repairing it. Use the DISM and sfc /scannow commands above for repair.
Fix 2: Check the Work Folders service
If the file exists but Windows still reports a loading error, check whether the service is present and configured.
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
sc query workfolderssvc
sc qc workfolderssvc
If Windows displays service information, the service registration exists. If it reports that the service does not exist, or the service repeatedly stops, do not create a replacement service manually. Work Folders may be controlled by an organization’s policy or setup.
Work Folders accounts are normally provisioned by an organization. On a company laptop, ask IT to verify the Work Folders account, policy, server connection, and service configuration. Microsoft’s Work Folders FAQ explains the client setup

If you do not use Work Folders, leaving its service disabled is generally acceptable according to Microsoft’s service guidance. Disabling the service does not restore a missing DLL, so repair Windows first if the file is absent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine system file after a false detection, but a familiar filename is not proof that a file is safe.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
workfolderssvc.dll. - Expand the event and review its path, detection name, and action.
- If the file is in the expected Windows directory and its Microsoft signature is valid, use Restore.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan afterward.
Do not choose Allow on device blindly. If the file was restored but disappears again, update Defender, run a full scan, and have IT or Microsoft support review the detection. Microsoft explains Protection History
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall only the affected application
If Windows has a healthy copy of the file and only one program displays the message, the application may have an incorrect dependency, damaged installer, or incompatible startup entry.
Try these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair, then test the program.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
- Otherwise uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
For a game, use the launcher’s verification feature before reinstalling. For example, in Epic Games Launcher, open Library, select the three dots beside the game, choose Manage, and select Verify. Epic documents its verification process

Do not copy workfolderssvc.dll into the game folder. If the application is genuinely failing because of a Windows component, replacing a local copy can hide the real problem and introduce a mismatched file.
Fix 5: Do not install Visual C++ unless the error names it
Multiple Visual C++ packages can legitimately coexist, but they do not replace workfolderssvc.dll.

Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ downloads, choosing x64 or x86 according to the application’s architecture. Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable downloads
Fix 6: Check drivers only when another symptom points to them
A missing Work Folders service DLL is not normally a driver problem. Use Device Manager only if the same incident includes hardware errors, failed storage detection, or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Storage controllers, Network adapters, or System devices.
- Right-click the device with a warning icon.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not replace the DLL because a driver is outdated. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale instead of making you inspect many devices manually; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation requires the full version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
An unofficial DLL may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the component store and service registration are also damaged. It may also be an altered file with no trustworthy Microsoft signature.
There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download for workfolderssvc.dll. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching official installation media, or Windows recovery instead.
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. workfolderssvc.dll is a service-oriented Windows component, not a typical self-registering ActiveX library. Running a command such as this is not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 workfolderssvc.dll
It can produce “DllRegisterServer was not found” and does not restore the Work Folders service. Microsoft documents the intended use of regsvr32

If DISM and SFC report no problems
A successful scan means Windows did not find a repairable protected-file problem. It does not prove that every service setting, Work Folders policy, user profile, or application installation is correct.
Continue with these checks:
- Confirm both expected file paths with the
dircommands. - Run
sc query workfolderssvcandsc qc workfolderssvc. - Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
- Test the affected program with a new local Windows account if the problem affects only one user.
- If the error began after a system change, open Control Panel, search for Recovery, select Open System Restore, and follow the wizard. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions
- On supported Windows 11 installations, open Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Microsoft documents this repair-reinstall option

FAQ
Is workfolderssvc.dll legitimate?
Yes, the genuine file is a Microsoft Windows Work Folders component. Verify the location and Microsoft digital signature. A file with the same name in a game folder, temporary directory, or user-download folder deserves investigation.
Is a missing file proof of malware?
No. Corruption, an incomplete update, antivirus quarantine, disk problems, or a failed repair can also cause the error. Run Microsoft Defender if the file was altered or repeatedly removed.
Which Windows versions contain it?
Microsoft update packages document Work Folders files for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11 integration. Builds and sizes vary by release, architecture, and update branch.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I use the 32-bit or 64-bit copy?
Use the copy supplied for the relevant Windows architecture. On 64-bit Windows, do not substitute a 32-bit file from SysWOW64 for the native file in System32, or copy either file into an application directory.
Can I disable Work Folders?
If the computer does not use Work Folders, the service can generally remain disabled. On a managed work device, ask IT first because organizational policy may depend on it.
When should I escalate?
Escalate when DISM cannot find a valid repair source, SFC cannot repair the file, the service is missing despite a healthy Windows installation, antivirus repeatedly quarantines it, or other Windows components are failing. A managed device should be handled by company IT, and signs of disk corruption or malware justify backup and professional support before further repair attempts.
