World of Warcraft Beta vs Live: Do Progress, Characters, and Features Carry Over?

World of Warcraft beta realms are separate test environments, not alternate live servers. You normally create a test character, play an incomplete and changing build, and provide feedback. Live realms hold the released game and its persistent characters. A character copy, when a particular test offers one, moves a copy into the beta; it does not move beta progress back to live. Blizzard has explicitly documented wipes for the October 21, 2026 Forever stress test, but its published Forever beta instructions do not establish a universal wipe-or-transfer rule for every beta character. Treat all beta progress as temporary unless Blizzard gives a specific launch policy. The Forever beta ended October 21, and the permanent Forever launch is scheduled for November 4, 2026.

What is the difference between a WoW beta realm and a live realm?

A beta exists to exercise unfinished content and systems before release. A live realm is the continuing, supported game in which your normal character, achievements and possessions are intended to persist.

Beta realms are controlled experiments

Blizzard’s Forever instructions directed participants to select a separate World of Warcraft: Forever Beta entry under In Development in the Battle.net desktop app, then enter a test realm and “Create a new test character when available.” The beta’s level cap and content schedule were deliberately staged, so what you could see depended on the test phase and build. The announced beta ran from September 17 through October 21, 2026, and has now closed. Blizzard’s beta instructions describe the client and test flow.

That separate installation matters. Seeing a character, item or achievement in the test client does not mean the same record exists in the ordinary live client. Test realms can be reset, unavailable for maintenance or changed between builds, and a feature can be enabled for one testing window and disabled in the next. The point is to find problems and gather feedback before release, not to provide a second permanent progression track.

Live realms are the permanent destination

Blizzard describes Forever as a new permanent home rather than a mode, season or new Classic version. Its planned journey reaches level 60, with later updates expected after launch. That roadmap is a release plan, not a promise that every destination or system was available in the beta. Blizzard’s Forever development recap explains the product distinction.

On live realms, you should expect ordinary account services, character progression and the released ruleset to be the focus. “Live” does not mean that every future feature is already present; it means the realm is the player-facing, persistent game rather than a pre-release test build.

Does beta progress carry over to live servers?

There is no documented guarantee that Forever beta levels, gear, quests, names, guilds or achievements will appear on live realms. The only explicit deletion rule in the cited announcements applies to the separate October 21 stress test. Unless Blizzard publishes a specific carryover policy, the safe decision is to regard test progress as disposable.

What Blizzard confirmed for the stress test

The October 21 stress test was a separate event designed to exercise servers. Blizzard stated that characters, names and guilds created on those stress-test servers would be wiped afterward. Its open-access terms also belonged to that event alone; they do not define every other WoW beta. The stress-test announcement records the deletion terms.

What remains unconfirmed for the regular Forever beta

The Forever beta announcement tells players to create a test character, but it does not state a universal rule saying every beta character is wiped, converted or transferred at launch. Do not infer a permanent character from a successful login, a high level, a rare drop or a reserved-looking name. Keep valuable goals on live realms until Blizzard explicitly says otherwise.

This distinction is more precise than saying “all beta characters are always deleted.” Blizzard has documented different rules for different tests, and the available Forever beta instructions do not settle every end-of-test account-data question. If a later Blizzard notice specifies a wipe, conversion or other treatment, that notice should control the answer for that particular test.

How are characters handled in beta?

Test characters and live characters occupy different contexts. A beta may require a new character, or it may offer a one-way import tool; neither workflow is a reverse export of beta progress.

Forever beta: create a new test character

The published Forever procedure says to create a new test character when available. That wording signals a test-only starting point rather than a live character being moved out of its home realm. Character names and guilds created during the distinct stress test were explicitly temporary.

Creating a test character is therefore useful for trying classes, leveling routes, professions, quests and group content under the test rules. It is not a naming reservation for launch, and it does not establish ownership of the same name on a permanent realm. If a name matters to you, use the separately announced reservation process or claim it after launch according to the live rules.

Midnight shows why copy rules are test-specific

For the earlier Midnight beta, Blizzard offered two choices: create a new test character or use character copy to import an existing The War Within character. The imported character was a copy inside the test environment; the cited instruction does not promise that anything earned there would return to live. Because Midnight and Forever are different tests, Midnight’s copy option cannot be used as evidence that Forever has the same feature. Blizzard’s Midnight beta instructions show the one-way example.

Copy availability can also be limited by the test build, account status or a temporary service window. Read the instructions for the named test rather than relying on a remembered button from another expansion. A missing copy button is not evidence that your live character was lost; it usually means that test is using a different setup.

Does testing overwrite your live character?

The documented workflows involve a separate test character or a copy of an existing character. They do not describe testing as overwriting the live original. Blizzard has not published every account-data edge case in the cited announcements, so keep the distinction practical: choose the test entry when you intend to test, and use the normal live entry for permanent play.

Why are levels and features different in beta?

Beta content is often released in stages. A missing zone, dungeon, battleground or level range can reflect the test schedule rather than a final design decision.

Forever’s staged level caps

Forever beta began with a level cap of 20, with an announced increase to 30 later in testing. Blizzard also planned to open additional zones, dungeons and a battleground during the test. Those numbers describe a dated testing plan, not the permanent game’s maximum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As a result, a level-20 character in the first test phase was not evidence that the finished game stopped at 20. Conversely, reaching the later test cap did not make that character a level-30 launch character. Test caps limit what testers can exercise in that build; they are not a promise about account conversion.

The planned live journey reaches level 60

Blizzard’s Forever development recap describes a planned level-60 journey for the permanent game. Comparing that destination with the beta’s initial cap is therefore comparing a release plan with an early test phase. It is not evidence that a beta character at level 20 is close to a transferable live character.

Midnight provides another staging example

The Midnight beta also scheduled some raids and activities for later test weeks. A feature absent on a particular day may simply be waiting for its test window. Check the announcement date and build before treating a beta menu as the final feature list.

Staging can affect more than levels. Zones may open in sequence, dungeon queues may be enabled only during scheduled tests, and a battleground can appear after the initial cap increase. Balance values, rewards and quest text can likewise change as feedback arrives. Screenshots or guides made during one build should be dated so readers do not mistake them for launch specifications.

Is a beta the same as a public stress test?

No. Blizzard gave the Forever beta and the October 21 stress test different purposes, access rules and persistence terms.

Question Forever beta October 21 stress test
Purpose Preview content, exercise systems and gather feedback Exercise server capacity for a one-day event
Access Opt-in selection or qualifying digital bundles, checked through the Battle.net account Open without a subscription, game time, invitation or prior beta access
Timing September 17–October 21, 2026 October 21, 2026
Character rule No universal wipe-or-transfer rule is stated in the cited announcement Characters, names and guilds created there were explicitly scheduled for wiping

The stress test’s open access and wipe language should not be copied onto every WoW beta, just as the regular beta’s staged cap should not be treated as the live cap.

A stress test can be especially busy and short-lived because its primary measurement is server behavior under load. Queue problems, disconnects and temporary realm closures are not reliable indicators of how the permanent service will perform. Participants should report those problems through the channels Blizzard provides rather than treating a stress-test outage as a character-transfer issue.

What happened between the beta and Forever launch?

The dates matter because several prelaunch activities can look like continued beta access even though they are separate systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. September 17–October 21, 2026: the announced Forever beta window. Access was tied to opt-in selection or eligible digital bundles, with the license checked on the Battle.net account.
  2. October 21, 2026: the separate public stress test ran for one day and carried an explicit wipe for its characters, names and guilds.
  3. October 27–November 3, 2026: qualifying Forever upgrade purchasers could use Early Name Reservation. Blizzard said up to three characters could be created and customized; names were first come, first served and not guaranteed.
  4. November 4, 2026: Blizzard scheduled the global Forever launch for 3:00 p.m. PST. This date is still in the future relative to the October 30, 2026 information date used here.

Early Name Reservation is not beta play. A name created during that window is governed by reservation rules, not by the stress-test deletion statement, and a beta character is not automatically a reserved launch character.

Purchasing an eligible upgrade after October 21 does not reopen the concluded beta. Beta access, name reservation and launch game time are separate benefits, so check which date and entitlement an edition actually covers. The launch schedule and reservation rules should be rechecked close to November 4 because prelaunch details can change.

How do I access a WoW beta when it is open?

You need a Battle.net account with the appropriate test license or eligibility, the Battle.net desktop app and the separate test installation. The Forever beta itself is closed, so these steps explain the announced workflow rather than promising current access.

  1. Sign in to the Battle.net account associated with your eligibility. Blizzard advised checking the account’s game-account list for the beta license; an email alone is not the entitlement record.
  2. Open the Battle.net desktop app and select World of Warcraft.
  3. Open the Game Version selector, choose In Development, and select World of Warcraft: Forever Beta when that entry is available.
  4. Install or launch the test client, enter a test realm and create the test character requested by the instructions. Do not assume the normal live realm list represents the beta.
  5. When the test window closes, return to the ordinary World of Warcraft game version for live play. Any character or item shown only in the test environment should be treated as temporary unless Blizzard says otherwise.

If the test entry does not appear, verify that you are using the account that received the entitlement, refresh or restart the Battle.net app, and check Blizzard’s current account and test-status notices. Do not buy an unrelated edition solely because an old invitation message mentions beta access; the relevant test window may already be over.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does Early Name Reservation mean?

Early Name Reservation was a prelaunch service scheduled for October 27 through November 3, not an extension of the beta. Eligible upgrade purchasers could create and customize up to three characters, but Blizzard warned that a requested name was not guaranteed. Blizzard’s upgrade and reservation announcement sets out those terms and the planned November 4 launch.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The reservation period also does not make a stress-test character permanent. It is a separate launch entitlement with its own dates, eligibility and first-come, first-served naming process. Creating three reservations is a maximum, not a guarantee that all three preferred names will be available.

Do Forever edition benefits change beta access?

Edition benefits were not interchangeable. The announced bundles separated name reservation, beta access and launch game time.

Edition or entitlement Published benefit
Skyborne Heroic Pack Early Name Reservation
Skyborne Epic Pack Early Name Reservation, beta access and game time beginning at launch
Warcraft Forever Collection Epic benefits plus Warcraft III content

Purchases made after October 21 could not reopen the concluded beta. A physical World of Warcraft Forever Collector’s Edition was described as including collectibles and a digital Warcraft Forever Collection code, but an edition purchase should be checked against the current official terms rather than assumed to grant past beta access. Blizzard’s Collector’s Edition announcement is the relevant reference.

What should you do with beta progress?

Use beta characters for testing, feedback and learning systems—not as a bank for permanent progression.

  • Record builds, quests or bugs you want to report, but do not value test loot as an assured live item.
  • Keep your main character, achievements and long-term names on the live version.
  • When a copy tool appears, read the specific test’s instructions; a copy into beta is not an export from beta.
  • Separate stress-test information from regular-beta information, especially when a wipe is mentioned.
  • Check the date and build of any feature announcement before concluding that content is missing from the final game.
  • Recheck launch timing, reservation eligibility and edition terms close to November 4 because prelaunch details can change.
  • Save screenshots or notes if you are testing a quest or interface, but do not treat those records as proof of a live entitlement.
  • Use the normal live client when you want to earn progress that you expect to keep.

How this comparison is scoped

The comparison uses Blizzard’s stated purpose, access path, character workflow, staged caps, dates and edition entitlements. It does not assign a transfer percentage, adoption rate or performance score: no such figure is established in the cited announcements. The key decision rule is therefore procedural rather than statistical—test on the beta, progress on live, and wait for an explicit Blizzard policy before treating test data as permanent.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose my live character by using beta?

Blizzard’s documented workflows involve creating a separate test character or, in Midnight, importing a copy of an existing character into the test. They do not describe testing as overwriting the live original. Keep using the ordinary live game version for permanent play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my beta levels or loot appear on live?

No retrieved Blizzard announcement promises that they will. The October 21 stress test explicitly wiped its characters, names and guilds; the cited Forever beta announcement does not establish a universal carryover rule for every beta character. Treat beta rewards as temporary unless Blizzard publishes a specific policy.

Can I reserve a Forever name without having played the beta?

Yes, if you meet the qualifying upgrade terms for Early Name Reservation during its October 27–November 3 window. The reservation process is separate from beta participation and allows up to three characters, subject to first-come, first-served availability.

Does a World of Warcraft subscription automatically unlock every beta?

No universal rule is stated. The Forever beta used opt-in selections or qualifying bundles, while the one-day stress test was open without a subscription or invitation; those access models should not be generalized to other tests.

How can I verify that my beta entitlement is real?

Check the Battle.net account’s game-account list for the beta license and look for the separate test version in the Battle.net desktop app. Blizzard’s client and account records, rather than an invitation message by itself, are the authoritative checks; the Forever beta window has ended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Midnight’s character-copy behavior predict what Forever will do?

No. Midnight documented a copy of an existing The War Within character into its beta, but Forever’s cited instructions only direct players to create a new test character. Each test can expose different tools and persistence rules.

Is Early Name Reservation the same as keeping a beta character?

No. Reservation was a separate October 27–November 3 launch service for qualifying purchasers. A beta or stress-test character does not automatically become one of the up to three reserved launch characters, and a requested name was not guaranteed.

Why can’t I find the Forever beta in Battle.net now?

The announced Forever beta ran from September 17 through October 21, 2026, so its test window has ended. The Battle.net selector’s absence is not evidence that your live character or account data was deleted.

Does the beta’s level-20 cap mean Forever launches at level 20?

No. The beta began with a cap of 20 and was planned to rise to 30 during testing, while Blizzard described a planned level-60 journey for the permanent game. Those are different stages of the product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Was the October 21 stress test open to everyone?

Blizzard announced that event without requiring a subscription, game time, invitation or prior beta access. Its open-access rule and explicit wipe applied to that one-day stress test, not automatically to every WoW beta.

Can an edition bought after October 21 restore beta access?

No. The announced beta had ended, and later purchases could not reopen it. Edition benefits such as name reservation, beta access and launch game time must be read according to their individual dates and terms.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Beta is for testing; live is for permanent progression. Forever’s beta ended October 21, 2026, and its stress-test characters, names and guilds were explicitly wiped. Blizzard has not established a universal transfer rule for every Forever beta character, so do not count on test levels, loot, names or achievements appearing at launch. Use the separate Battle.net test client when a beta is open, treat character copy as a one-way import, and follow the distinct Early Name Reservation and November 4 launch rules for permanent play.
