Yes—you can play much of World of Warcraft solo, including the outdoor story. Before creating a character, choose which version you want: modern retail World of Warcraft: Midnight, World of Warcraft: Classic, or the new level 1–60 World of Warcraft: Forever, which launches globally on 4 November 2026. Each version has its own characters and rules. Then choose a class for how you want to fight, a race that can be that class, and the right realm or Ruleset to play with friends.
Which version of World of Warcraft should a beginner start with?
Choose the version before you choose a character: retail is the modern game with the broadest solo-support tools, Forever is a reimagined original-world journey, and Classic is for players seeking its older experience. They are separate versions, not stages through which one character moves.

Forever’s global login window is 23:00 UTC on 4 November 2026. That is 3:00 p.m. PST on 4 November in the Americas and 00:00 on 5 November in Europe. Blizzard describes Forever as a home alongside retail and Classic, not a replacement for either.
For a first character, retail is a natural fit if you want the most built-in ways to experience group-shaped content alone. Choose Forever if you want to level through the original world and are happy for dungeons and raids to be social activities. Classic makes sense when the older version itself is the draw.

Can you play WoW solo?
Yes. You can quest and explore alone in all three versions, but the amount of solo support differs: retail offers dedicated NPC-assisted content, while Forever’s dungeons and raids are designed for groups.
Retail: solo-friendly dungeons, Delves, and raid stories
New retail players begin in Exile’s Reach, a guided opening zone whose first dungeon can be completed with NPC teammates. Blizzard’s published leveling route continues through Dragonflight from levels 10–70 and an accelerated The War Within story from 70–80; owners of Midnight continue the Worldsoul Saga from there.
- Follower Dungeons: Normal-difficulty dungeons with four NPC teammates. Queue through Group Finder, choose your role, and let the NPCs fill the remaining roles. The optional Dungeon Assistance setting lets the NPCs lead.
- Delves: Short solo adventures in Khaz Algar, available from level 70. In The War Within, Brann Bronzebeard accompanies the player. Blizzard describes Delves as 10–15-minute adventures across 11 difficulty tiers, with epic rewards comparable to group raiding.
- Story Mode raids: See a raid’s story solo or with up to four friends, supported by NPC companions. Blizzard’s Azj-Kahet example uses nine NPCs when a player enters alone.
Forever: solo outdoor adventures, group instances
Forever is designed so a single character can quest, explore, and pursue professions. Its Camping system gives players a way to meet around a campfire, but Blizzard has not described a Follower Dungeon, Delve, or Story Mode raid system for this version. Dungeons are five-player instances, and raids are group content.
Blizzard says Forever adds nine five-player dungeons spanning levels 13–60. The first raids—Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit, and Onyxia’s Lair—unlock on 9 December 2026. Raid-size figures published by third parties are not confirmed here as official sizes, so do not use them to plan a group.
Forever questing can be done alone, but you will need other players for its dungeons, battlegrounds, and raids. A death does not delete a character in the launch experience: you can release to a graveyard and run back, or use a Spirit Healer, which costs durability and may cause Resurrection Sickness.
Which class should you play as a beginner?
Pick the class whose combat style sounds enjoyable; Blizzard does not publish a ranked beginner-class list. If you want flexibility between roles, consider Druid or Paladin. If you want a ranged fighter with a pet to help occupy enemies outdoors, Hunter is a commonly suggested option—not an official ranking.

Class determines how you fight and which group roles you can fill. Tank characters take the lead against enemies, healers keep allies alive, and damage dealers focus on defeating opponents. Some classes can fill more than one role; a few are damage-only in the official retail class list.

Forever launches with nine classes: Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior. The four other classes in the table—Monk, Demon Hunter, Death Knight, and Evoker—are retail classes and do not exist in Forever’s launch roster. Tanks and healers are often in demand for groups, but choosing one also means taking on those group responsibilities. If you are unsure, Blizzard’s character-creation tooltips describe each class’s fantasy, and the long-running Wowpedia newbie guide suggests trying several characters to level 5–15 before settling on one.
What race should you pick in WoW?
Pick a race that can be your chosen class and, if you are joining friends, shares their faction. Race affects appearance, starting area, racial abilities, and available classes; faction determines whether you can freely group with those friends. In Forever, Skyborne is the exception to the usual race-locks-faction pattern: you choose its faction-aligned path during character creation.
Here is the official Forever class matrix. An “X” means the combination is available at launch; a blank means it is not listed as playable.

Can I play a Human Hunter, Undead Paladin, or Dwarf Shaman?
Yes, all three combinations are available in Forever. The launch roster also adds Alliance Gnome Priest, Horde Orc Mage, and Horde Troll Warlock; these are new combinations compared with original WoW.
What is different about Skyborne?
Skyborne, also called shen’dorei, is a new playable race with a shared level 1–12 starting zone, Zephras Isle. Choose Horde-aligned Windshapers to play Shaman, or Alliance-aligned High Order Skyborne to play Mage. Both paths can also be Druids, Hunters, Rogues, or Warriors. Access to the race and starting zone requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher digital upgrade; Kotaku reported the Heroic Pack at $30.

For retail, the official playable-races hub names Allied Races that must first be recruited in-game. It lists Void Elf, Lightforged Draenei, Dark Iron Dwarf, Kul Tiran, Mechagnome, Earthen, and Haranir for Alliance, and Nightborne, Highmountain Tauren, Mag’har Orc, Zandalari Troll, Vulpera, Earthen, and Haranir for Horde. That list is not a complete core-race list. Pandaren choose a faction, according to Wowpedia’s newbie guide.
Alliance or Horde?
If you plan to play with friends, choose the same faction. Alliance and Horde are a meaningful social divide: Wowpedia’s beginner guide describes interaction across the divide as limited outside combat. In Forever, faction is also one of the two requirements for grouping, alongside Ruleset.
If you are playing alone, decide based on the race and class combination you want. For example, Forever’s Windshaper Skyborne can be a Shaman, while the Alliance High Order path can be a Mage. The original eight Forever races start in their own areas, so race also changes your opening quests and surroundings.
What realm should I choose as a new player?
In Forever, you do not select from a traditional realm list; you select a Ruleset. In retail, realms remain, and Normal is a straightforward default for players who do not want open-world PvP forced on them. Classic still uses realms, so choose the same one as your friends.

Forever characters can group, join guilds, run dungeons, and raid only with players on the same Ruleset and faction. Decide those two details with friends before creating a character.
On a first Forever login, you also choose an Experience Preset before selecting a Ruleset. Classic uses SD models and fewer modern UI helpers; Enhanced uses HD models, quest blobs, one-bag, and transmog. Blizzard recommends Enhanced if you are unsure, and says the preset is a starting point rather than a lock. HD versus SD models can later be changed per character in Options or at a Barbershop. Forever character names have two parts and must be unique within the region.

Retail Normal and RP realms
On retail Normal realms, contested zones are not free-for-all PvP zones by default. War Mode is opt-in: turn it on in the Talents interface from level 20 while in a faction or capital city, and turn it off at a rest location. War Mode matches players from any realm with other War Mode players for open-world PvP. RP realms use the Normal ruleset without open-world PvP.

Have a Battle.net account, an active subscription or Game Time, and the Battle.net desktop app ready. The app supports Windows and Mac; controller support is in beta. Check the product page’s system requirements before installation, and enable two-factor authentication on your account.
- Install and launch: Install Forever through the Battle.net desktop app, then sign in.
- Choose the presentation: Select Classic or Enhanced as your Experience Preset.
- Coordinate your play group: Select the Ruleset you and your friends agreed on, then create a character on the same faction as theirs.
- Choose a race and class: Check the class matrix above before committing, especially if you want to play one of the new combinations or Skyborne.
- Follow the opening quests: A yellow “!” marks a quest to accept; a yellow “?” marks a quest turn-in. Early quests introduce combat.
- Keep the core controls handy: L opens the quest log, M the map, P the spellbook, C the character pane, K professions, and Escape Options.
- Learn and resupply: Visit a class trainer as you level, carry food and drink, and bind your Hearthstone with an innkeeper.
- Choose professions: Each character can learn two primary professions plus all three secondary professions—Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid. Gathering professions such as Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning pair naturally with questing.
- Use campsites: Sit or craft for at least one minute to gain camp-feature benefits from nearby players’ professions.
One practical way to keep bags from filling is to sell grey-quality junk. You can adjust the interface as you learn what information you want on screen rather than trying to configure everything before starting.
Is WoW Forever included with a subscription?
Yes. Forever base access is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. Retail also requires a subscription or Game Time for full play; the current monthly USD price is not established here, so check the Battle.net shop for the price in your region.

The Skyborne race and Zephras Isle starting zone are separate from base access and require the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher digital upgrade. Kotaku reported the Heroic Pack at $30 in October 2026. That is a reported pack price, not the recurring subscription price.

- Are you all playing retail, Classic, or Forever?
- For Classic, are you choosing the same realm?
- For Forever, are you selecting the same Ruleset and faction?
- Does your preferred race support your preferred class in that version?
- If you want to play solo, does the version provide the kind of solo support you expect, particularly for dungeons and raid stories?
After those decisions, choose a character whose class and race appeal to you. In Forever, each of those choices affects the experience: class determines combat style, race shapes the opening and available class options, and faction and Ruleset determine whom you can join.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move my character between Retail, Classic, and Forever?
No. These are separate game versions with distinct characters and rules, not linked chapters of a single character’s progression. Choose the version you want before making a character.

Retail’s Starter Edition is capped at level 20. A subscription or Game Time unlocks content beyond that cap, higher dungeons and raids, guilds, unrestricted chat, and the Auction House.
How does Newcomer Chat work in retail WoW?
Newcomer Chat is available to new players until level 50, with experienced volunteer guides. A guide account must be in good standing, be level 80, and have completed 3,000 quests.
Can I turn off WoW chat or social invites?
Retail players can leave chat channels with the /Leave command. Options > Social includes controls to block trades, guild invites, calendar invites, and chat-channel invites.
